View Full Version : So why does everyone hate on the Rollins section?

Seems like everytime I read about Undertow, or "Bottom" in particular, people have something negative to say about the quiet spoken word section.

I didn't hear Undertow in its entirety until last year, and this song stood out to me as a good one. And I love the quiet section...the moodiness, the brooding, disgusted anger that Rollins' brings to the lyrics. Good stuff.

I never understood why people didn't like that section either. I think Rollins did a good job with the part, it fits perfectly if you ask me....probably one of my favorite parts on the entire album.

The Rollins part is great. Who says otherwise? It's better than the live performances where Maynard says it.

I think the album version with Rollins sounds pretty cool. He sounds a bit more calm. I also have a decent live version where Maynard speaks his own part, but he sounds more emotional, which is also cool, but gives the song less "contrast" than the studio version.

That segment is without question one of the highlights of the entire Undertow album, in my opinion.

The Album is a solid one, except for the last song/narrative. Tool should seriously consider a rerelease with a different new song instead of Disgustipated

Its......an ugly prick of a song. Its barely a song to be honest, more narrative, the delivery fails to interest, and the supporting music is pitiful.
The drips at the beginning is sick haha, my cue to change tracks

actually, for pure constistency, UNdertow is far more solid.
Aenima is rocking, but the fillers are mostly lame

Lateralus has some of the best songs, probably the strongest record overall.

The ex-friends I know that hate on this are basically dreaming about sucking off maynard 24/7. one actually has a tattoo on his back like maynards he wants him so bad. I think what happens is their image of maynard is shattered when they hear Rollins on this song. They're like "OMG nobody but maynard can do vocals on a tool song" and they know that H. R. does a great job with it and they feel like they're cheating on MJK or something. Fuck em' I'm done with these motherfuckers, I'll just keep sleeping with their girlfriends.

sorry, I've got issues right now.

Absolute best? I personally dig intolerance more than bottom, but the first 7 tracks are so equally tight that i really couldnt pick a definite fave

I really like spoken word, and this section aids a nice aesthetic to the song.

I used to like Prison Sex best, but now I've come to think Flood is the best song on Undertow.

I prefer to lump 4deg and Flood together, makes for a 'cold flood' haha.

^ That was pretty interesting. I wish Zach would have a let out a more extended yell with the ol' 'Nard though.

Okay...... sigh..... well...... I dont get it.

I love Disgustipated. First time I listened to Undertow, I listened to it from start to finished with the volume.... pretty loud. But when disgustipated came on, my interest was peaked enough that i cranked it up as loud as i could bare. I mean the shotgun blasts, "THIS! IS! NECESSARY!" **BANG**, how it goes from quiet malevolence to ear piercing chaos is delightful to my ear.

I can easily see how someone might dislike it, I suppose. I just really dig the experimental/industrial sound to it.

I've never heard anyone hating on the Rollins bit, personally I prefer Rollins written word to Keenans,

I agree with elusiveE on Disgustipated--it's a very interesting song. I enjoy listening to it whenever I put Undertow.

And I rather like Rollins' bit, Undertow is just a good album in general. I don't listen as much as I prefer Lateralus and 10,000 Days (yes!! seriously!!) but when I do, i really enjoy it.
