i don't know if it works for mac, but if it does, grab cool edit pro 2.0 from kazaa, or the demo from their site... it's great.... not really worth $250 though, lol...

especially for non professional usage.

Yeah its probably a RAM related problem. That program sucks up a lot of resources...

Do you have OS X? If so, you can try using this program called Cacophony (http://www.bannister.org/software/cacophony.htm). Its pretty good, and has no limitations despite its shareware status.

If you dont have OS X though, you could always try downloading CakeWalk over Gnutella. Or maybe get a simpler program like such (http://download.com.com/3000-2182-900451.html?tag=lst-0-1)

Here's a few...

Ableton Live
Mark of the Unicorn's Digital Performer
Emagic Logic
Apple Soundtrack

Really you should probably be using either Logic or Soundtrack, as both are now made by Apple, so you're pretty much assured they'll work as advertised. Logic is pretty high end and Soundtrack is more low end - a lot like Sonic Foundry's Acid.
