We can associate this track with Schism for multiple reasons. For one, Intermission + Jimmy was a proven instance of Tool using a segue to perhaps prepare you for the emotion that will follow in a smaller way. Kind of like Parabol/Parabola, but that's not necessarily the extent of their relationship. Also, Mantra partially appears on the Schism video as the black disk moves about.
When I first heard Mantra I was made very afraid. It was my first Tool cd (I bought them all, but backwards as time went on...) ever and I had no idea what it was going to be. I felt small, and intimidated, and alone (which I was at the time), and I almost cried. It didn't sound like a scary monster, but, someone or something that's been so separated from others, and from outside love, that it must wail and moan as Mantra does.
So then if you consider what Schism is about, the painful separation from another being... it would make sense. Mantra sets the mood, kind of like Eon Blue Apocalypse for The Patient.
This is my previously posted take on Lateralus as a story, so far:
The Grudge: Painful conflict. Eon Blue/Patient: Painless conflict, preparation for something better. Mantra/Schism: Mourning and loss as separation is purposefully made. Parabol/Parabola: Reconciliation, rejoicing. Ticks and Leeches: Haunted by old problems, they must be taken care of before they get out of hand a second time. Lateralus: Spiritual development as two beings?
My estimations stop there.
