The song is partly about Alchemy (the Art of Knowing) and spiritual illumination. Ascendency, self transformation. Its also about being a navigator of thought and being.
Alkemy: a symbolic process involving the endeavor to transmutate base metals (the lower self) into gold (the higher self, or spiritual perfection). It is a four stage process signified by colors.
"Black, then white are all I see in my infancy,... red , then yellow came to be...reaching out to me..."
Black= guilt, origin, latent forces ( Prime matter) a symbol for the soul in its original condition;
White= minor work, 1st transmutation, quicksilver;
Red= sulpher, passion;
Gold= spitirual perfection
note: please see my analysis on "The Grudge" the post is 3 parts( dont ask me why) and is titled 'Solve et Coalgula' part 1,2,& 3
this is my Favorite Tool song and incidently the band when asked if there was a song that they are especially proud of their reply was "LATERALUS"
Let me know if this was helpful !??
P.S. Hey M.J., I hope this interpretation makes up for the ones that are off the mark!?
