I tend to think this song is about Freedom and Determinism. In this area of philosophy, the terminology often refers to an AGENT (a body that generates motion) and a PATIENT (the body that is affected by the AGENT, eg. a hand that is warmed by fire) Perhaps Maynard is grappling with the unknown/invisible factors that are acting upon him and to which he can do nothing about. I'm sure a lot of us can sympathise with that , where things seem to be totally out of our hands, and it can be quite frustrating and bewildering at times. When it seems you can't do anything to stop things turning out the way they do, you might have to resign yourself to waiting it out to see what eventually happens.
