Schism can mean many things. to say it's about two individuals, i think is too specific, but then again, that's what i think.

i think schism is simply about how people have really lost the art of communication. not just simple communication, but one in which we are able to UNDERSTAND each other; something that is kind of rare.
"i know the pieces fit..." i think that demostrates the FAITH in humanity that Maynard has, the faith that we should have in each other.

the most important line in the song, to me is:
"cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion."
this is very true, and it's in your face. it's saying that the fact that we don't talk to each other, minimizes chances of understanding, it denigrates compassion. if we don't COMMUNICATE, and talk to each other, then how can we understand? being silent and stubborn doesn't do us any good. we must "strengthen our communication," and perhaps then, we can all take a step forward.
