This is kinda sad, yet inspiring. It reconfirms that Tool are mere humans...

Ok, first i hear the shit about Maynard acting all rockstar after the shows, then something else happened to make me sad in the same kind of way, but i forgot what it was. Now this.
One shitty day in the world of tool.

Back to my own band. Must. Be. Perfect.
Que the Terminator music.

I'm kind of disappointed really....you figure a person who seems to be very in tune with himself wouldn't have a temper tantrum over his voice cracking.

Microphone=tantrum city.

The first band practice i ever had was at college. I was very, terribly nervous that someone not in the band would hear me sing. so i told everyone to come by themselves. Dave, fucking dave, shows up with twelve people. They were all so pretty. that night i learned something terrible about myself: i am a whiney little sissy girl trapped in a giants body.
It just happens to singers. I see it all the time. The more they care, the harder it is to laugh at their self, in the moment.

Aw man, i'm a guitar player, I don't know that feeling....but being as how the singer is generally up at the front directing the flow of the music, and the mood....I can understand how you'd get pretty pissed if you fucked up the message you're trying to convey, and the mood you're trying to set...but hey, what the hell do I know? I just play guitar. haha.

Ah yes, this video...

You know, his voice cracked all the time on The Pot during the 06 tour, and he didn't throw a tantrum. Maybe he just doesn't care anymore.

Seems the band isn't perfect, but then again live, you can't be perfect.

And here's some more tool mess ups.

Yeah, I'm in a band as well... I would be quite pissed off if my singer stormed off stage just because he fucked up. I fuck up all the time on stage... but people tend to not notice it if you play it off and keep going. I dont smash my guitar and storm off stage.

I'm just saying, for whatever reason, ^^ probably nailed it with the direction of mood, but you feel like every fucking eye is almost willing you to fuck up, or fuck them. It's berry berry sta-range.

I love it! Raw emotions without metaphors or figurative language. A straight reaction! How often does that happen with Tool?

That first video is not really a "fuck up"... it's just that what we're used to is exceptional. Ya know... it's understandable.

It's not fair to show that second video out of context... the rest of the performance is spot on. That little bit is totally excusable.

I agree with you completely. Usually I only want the greatest TOOL videos to be in my favorites, but this particular set has been in there for a good while, due to me actually loving the video despite the minor mess up.

Take care,

So? The dude's a spiritual figurehead, analytical genius, and brilliant creative. There are always greater and lesser persons than yourself, but not everyone is equal, and when you actually legitimately are better than the vast majority of the population, you can act however you want.

I had a roommate once, his name was Sean. He called himself Virus, and he deserved the name; he was one of those Ticks & Leeches kinda guys, always taking, only giving when it was advantageous for him to do so. A little shithead, really. He was an enormous Tool fan, and serenaded everyone with his off-key renditions all the time. He was materialistic, unenlightenable, and shallow.

If I had fans like him, I'd hate my fan base too. Hell, I was on mushrooms one time, listening to their music, wondering what it meant, and figured to myself "You know, if I met Maynard, he'd probably hate me. And I really wouldn't blame him."
Not that I deserve to be hated- well, by a stranger, anyway- but the guy puts uncomprehensable amounts of thought and effort into his music- we're talking about someone who seems incapable of settling for less than perfect.

I dunno what I'm trying to say here, I'm drawing a circle around a line. If you get the picture, great, if not, stfu.

Well, I completely agree with this post.

Maynard kinda is a perfectionist. Ever see the interview with Danny and Maynard in the hallway? The interviewer asked "What's it like being in Tool?" and Danny said "Are you kidding? I work with this guy every day."

Maynard pushes himself very fucking hard because he devoutly believes he CAN do that. That's why when he fucks up, he gets super pissed. You can't blame him. In this video his voice slips a couple times before the major fuck-up, and he had been trying to hold it together until that point.

I think Maynard knows what kind of expectations he has riding on him in concert. He knows that if he just nails it exactly like it's supposed to be done it'll have a dramatic effect on the crowd and really move people that much more during the song. So when he slips, he thinks, "Fuck! What the FUCK just happened!?! I know I can nail this shit!" and throws the mic down in disgust.

The man pushes himself. Everytime I really try to sing all the way through Lateralus, I'm always completely drained by "With my feet upon the ground.." I guess you could say "I lose my voice within the sound." Sorry, horrible joke. Maynard is crazy good. Enough said.

Ah, that does suck...kinda moving though once you read http://toolshed.down.net/tour/summer02/020817.html and you read the line about the rest of the band finishing the song with the audience singing vocals...warm fuzzy feeling :]
