Tool's most repetitive song. They write a good tune then it's repeated for 5 minutes or something. It's least favorite on the album, I don't know why so many people like it.

I just like telling bible thumpers
"Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now
Open my eyes, and blind me with your light/lies now!"

"Deaf and blind, and dumb and born to follow"

If your looking for a 2 min version of this song, I would suggest the limp bizkit cover.

resonance.

Yeah this is probably my least favorite Tool song... I usually just skip through the foreplay and cut to the end awesomeness. Though I must say it's quite a trip live.

I love this song, but I definitely agree with you; they should only repeat each musical phrase once.

this is actually one of my favorite songs from them. i think the repitition emphasizes the lyrics importance. the song really proved itself when i was listening to it in the car on the way to church.

I agree with a couple of the previous posters. The repetition is emphasizing the lyrical message.

QFT. Also one of my least favorite Tool tracks in general. Not only is it repetitive, but it's not even THAT great of a piece (not worth repeating for sure haha).

The ending is fun (drums + bass are rockin'), the vocals are pretty lousy though, and overall the song just doesn't deliver.

Don't get why it's such a favorite amongst Tool fans (and yes, I am big on the Opiate/Undertow era, so that's not influencing my opinion here).

I agree a little with your opinion, but only as far as the vocals are concerned. The singing sounds to me a bit boring sometimes. Well at least until the "Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life"-part.
Also, the song doesn't have a useful message to me personally, because I'm pretty open-minded. It also sucks that this song is at the end of the EP. I mean, first you get two kick-ass songs, like "cold and ugly" and "jerk-off". After this "opiate" sounds a bit disappointing and a bit boring to me.

Well, every "decent song" is repetetive more or less. I don't know if you guys realize why songs are repetitive(?). It's because they are more easily remembered that way. You know, there was a time in human history when people were not able to record music on some kind of medium and they had to remember the song structure, the lyrics, all of that. So, people were "forced" to make songs that are not so hard to remember. You know, I have played the guitar for at least 10 years now, and I still have trouble sometimes to even remember the chords of a song...guess I'm not so talented...but at least I try...

The universe may be chaotic (and hostile), but there's also some structure (or order) in the form of laws of physics and stuff. We are forced to obey these laws. We are somehow inclined to structurize things.

I also agree that repetitiveness can sometimes be beautiful:

Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone

These are lyrics from the song "Dogs" by Pink Floyd. It's about a soldier...

why are you complaining that "Opiate" is too repetitive? ALL the songs on this album are repetitive! Still a really good album, though its my least favorite of Tool's. I always enjoy listening to this song and screaming the last part! I also think this song has the best vocals from Maynard of the whole album.

Opiate IS a great song and IS NOT repetitive. I have no idea where that comes from. So he repeats the lyrics ONCE.....oh gosh!!! With the exception of Hush, it's the best track on the album.

If you guys notice, it eventually builds up in emotion, and collects at the bridge into the ending.
It's a buildup.
Doesn't make it bad in particular.

Tool's most repetitive song. They write a good tune then it's repeated for 5 minutes or something. It's least favorite on the album, I don't know why so many people like it.

Opiate is an amazing song that really brings home what religion actually is. Religion is the most powerful drug of all. It provides a means of control of the masses. Unfortunately, the idea of a wonderful afterlife that will transcend all suffering and desire is nothing more than an ecuse for this place to be so unacceptable. Most everyone is a two dimmensional facade that has been for the most part constructed through tv personalities. There is no longer a focus on expanding intellectually. The idea of being intellectually inclined is almost looked down upon and jeered. Our government has realized that if people were to think rationally and understand the one truth, that desire creates suffering, capitalism would not thrive the way it has today. Unforunately, there are about ten thousand people (a generous estimate) in this country who actually understand that there is no after life and we are destroying this life by constantly trying to circumvent nature. This brings me back to the point that organized religion with false promises of a peaceful afterlife is the worst drug in existence. This allows people to abandon responsibility for their own actions and blame original sin and human nature for their wrong doing. This is the most disgusting by product of religion. As the dharma says, desire creates suffering. Desire enables one to take food from anothers table. It enables oil tycoons and ceos to feel that they deserve to plow through resources. Desire has also enabled the have not proletariat to desire such a life style through constant visual repetition of celbrities on the television (the ultimate farce). These poor saps desire this lifestyle so much that they are actually okay with seeing celebrities flaunt their lives on tv while they are struggling to make ends meat in todays society. This is the most disappointing consequence of all. Christians are naturally weak because their efforts of perfection are made in vain. They are sin stricken from birth. I see all of these skewed interpretations of maynard's message and it upsets me that so many people can hear the truth being repeated over and over in their head, yet they cannot connect the dots. Too many of these "Tool followers" are following nothing more than the celebrity aspect of the band. I see Tool as I see the one I call I, which I will leave open to interpretation.

Peace

Hince the complete lack of "original" thoughts. I was aiming for basic truths. As far as redundancy and no paragraphs, that is what happens when you are ripped at three in the morning. I don't give much concern to internet post, just happened to be checking out the tool site. I do find it amaZing that such a site could even exist. Countless members that think they understand truth, yet we waste our times on one of the biggest attrocities to communication. Have fun trying to kill time. If there is anyone out there that has anything of worth to say e-mail me [email protected]
Peace

Opiate is an amazing song that really brings home what religion actually is. Religion is the most powerful drug of all. It provides a means of control of the masses. Unfortunately, the idea of a wonderful afterlife that will transcend all suffering and desire is nothing more than an excuse for this place to be so unacceptable.

Most everyone is a two dimmensional facade that has been constructed through tv personalities. There is no longer a focus on expanding intellectually. The idea of being intellectually inclined is looked down upon and jeered.

If you have made it to the end I appreciate your tenacity. I am sure that most will not.

Peace

Saw Tool in Atlanta around 98 or so - International Ballroom (such an elegant name for a metal warehouse in an industrial park lolo)
When they played Opiate, the place exploded - the entire floor was like a pit.
It killed.

Tool's most repetitive song. They write a good tune then it's repeated for 5 minutes or something. It's least favorite on the album, I don't know why so many people like it.

I don't think it's repetitive.

Looking at the guitar part, it is pretty varied.
Same riff, but built upon with layers

just some made up pseudo-stuff :)

echo came to mind from some dos batch scripts. Like, in some school computers they booted to ms-dos, then it displayed own made menu, which was done by creative use of echo call.
