Even though I became a hardcore fan this year, I can say that I was fortunate enough to loosely follow Tool's career over the years. The start of which was seeing "Sober" on MTV's Headanger's Ball in the spring of '93. I even still have an old VHS of when I recorded it on the show.

I still have a soft spot for "Sober". Because it was my first Tool song, I'm biased towards it. When I hear it, it mostly affects me on a nostalgic level; remembering junior high at the age of 13, when I first heard it. But now that I've heard their whole catalogue, it still holds up as one of my favorites, and it'd probably be in my Top 5. Also, it was probably the highlight of my first show, in September.

I can't say I was lucky enough to know about them in the Opiate days, but oh well.

Yup, I still have a tape of Headbanger's Ball with Sober. I bought Undertow Dec of 93.

*I thought I was the only one goofy enough to record the Ball*

Heh heh. Nah, I did it too.

Before I had the Video Croissant VHS, I once stayed up until 5 am waiting for the show to repeat so that I could tape the video for Faith No More's "Midlife Crisis", which by mid-'93 was impossible to catch on TV.

I was 5 years old in my basement when I saw the sober video on MTV at, say 2 AM. Nightmares until I decided to look back into it, and 10 years later I'm in love with Tool. Funny how things work out.

Sober was my first Tool song, followed by Lateralus (song) after lots of recommendation. Then I went after Undertow and 10kD (I only had a few songs off of Aenima and Lateralus, I didn't like the rest at the time). Every once in a while I went through Aenima and Lateralus again and nabbed the songs I liked. Right now I have every song except Intension (which sucks).

Anyway, I imagine most people wearing Tool shirts discovered them through Sober.

I remember burning CD's for people in High School, and they'd have stuff like Sober and 46&2 on them. I caught on because of that.

I discovered Tool thanks to a friend who lent Aenima to me so the first song I listened to was Stinkfist... Heard Sober just after I bought and listened to Lateralus album.

Intenison does not suck man. Listen to it when an open mind and love it for what it is my friend. Every odd sounding but still there is a message you must consume.

Sober is definately the first song that got me into tool. Although I first heard it after aenima was released, late nineties of course. But every time I heard it on the radio it always struck me.
"Jesus, won't you fucking whistle
something but the past and done? "
Those lyrics, I was always thinking "SWEET!"

For me it was Disgustipated a few years ago, and for the longest time I was wondering who made that song. I didn't find out until the summer of 2006 and thats when I started listening to them, but I didnt become a "huge fan" until I read books on the flower of life and other books.

My brother actually bought Undertow when it first came out and he played Sober for me. I liked it so much I just kept it.

Yeah, Headbanger's Ball used to truly rock. I saw the video for Sober in 1993 when I was a senior in high school. I immediately bought Undertow and was blown away by it. It was one of the most influential records of my lifetime, for me personally. Later that year I realized Tool had an EP out called Opiate, so I bought it as well. It, too, was unbeliveable. I was hooked from the moment I first heard Sober and TOOL has been my favorite band ever since. Though my favorite album is Aenima, I love all the albums and haven't stopped listening to 10,000 Days since the day it came out.

Beavis and Butthead.

Hell yeah I remember butthead said "Hey beavis do you know what his band is called?" He repiled "No, what butthead?" Butthead said "TOOOOL." ill remember that for the rest of my life. and of course after he said TOOL beavis and butthead had their trademark laughing goin on. It was awesome. I miss beavis and butthead. Peace

I first saw the video for Sober way before I became a fan of the band (when I was about 10 roughly). My sister was already a fan at the time (and later subsequently got me into them in a big way). Even though I saw it at such a young age, it remained etched in my brain (at least on a subconscious level).

I never even bothered with Sober until much later, when I started looking into their older works. I actually got into them with Lateralus.

The first track I heard was Opiate, my boyfriend's band were covering it and he gave me the tape after I went all, "where is THAT from!?". Then I walked in one day and they were doing "intolerance"... so Hellooooo Undertow. I think Sober got "big" a few months later. Thanks, ex-highschool boyfriend for your excellent music taste.
