I may be way off, but does anyone else think this is one of Tool's most complex songs timing-wise? I mean at many points in the song (especially from 5:37-5:57) it seems like the guitar, bass, and drums are all playing in different time signatures but they seem to blend together so well...

Well, I don't think Jambi is that well a crafted song anyway. A few alright riffs that don't work or gel well together at all, the intro is pretty daft, Adams riff is so rubbish that all Danny doesn't know what to do to spice it up. It's also nothing like Meshuggah, although the riffs are in general more brutal.

But, I don't think the instruments are in different signatures. Its ot nothing on 7mins+ Rosetta Stoned, where the guitar is in 3, the bass is in 5, and the drums are in 3 4 and 5.

i dig how the guitar is in 9/8, as in 8/8 with an extra 8th note, and the drums are in 9/8, as in 3 sets of 8th note triplets.

i thought the riffs were mediocre towards the beginning and up until the middle, but now i kinda dig 'em b/c of their simplicity

The timings in this song aren't really complex imo. 9/8, 6/16, 9/8, 6/16, basically. Rosetta Stoned is by far their most complicated song as far as time signature shifts. 8/8, 5/4, 8/8, 5/4, 8/8, 10/4, 9/8, 6/8, 11/4, 12/8, 15/8, 12/8, (overwhelmed), 5/4, 3/8, 6/8, 3/8, 5/4. (that's just the bass parts, as I recall it, I might have missed something).

Yeah, think about it...

"Sunshine Of Your Love"
"Smoke On The Water"
"Satisfaction"
"Layla"
"Back In Black"

The simplest riffs are usually the best, not to say a riff needs to be simple to be good...

Yeah, lets compare the opening riff of Jambi to Sunshine of Your Love, Smoke On The Water and Layla.

So how long do we have to wait until Jambi makes its way into a version of Guitar Hero?

back on topic, the complex guitar thingie is indeed very impressive. Rosetta stoned also has such a sort of irregular counting thingie, at the start of the outro, but I still think Jambi is one of the complexer songs.

I think the most complex on 10,000 Days has to be Rosetta Stoned.

I can't help but wonder if there's still a code to crack with this song. Tool always loves to create riddles for ones who choose to "dig deeper" within their music. The fact that the song is homage to the Rosetta Stone and the multiple odd time signatures makes me think there's something more there to figure out. Like in Jambi somebody mentioned something about morse code within the beat.
