So, I listened to this song with my dieing 42 year-old father, in the hopes of bonding.

In the end, he said he loved it, it had soem awesome drums, lacking in the guitar, but overall good.

Then he said "Did he say 'Shit the Bed' ?"

Apparently, my father connected.

"Shit the Bed" was, apparently,a Popular saying in the old days. Maybe only up north (HE grew up in Michigan, Maynard in Ohio), but a saying nonetheless. Apparently, when something went wrong, they'd sigh and mumbl;e "Shit the bed" or something of the sort.

So, I think in the song, he isn't Shitting the bed. It's an expression of exasperation.

Apparently it's just catching on in the UK.

It would certainly make more sense, though the obvious disturbances of the person in the song can also explain the phrase used literally.
