View Full Version : The most underrated Tool song of all

A lot of fans consider this to be "filler", but I absolutely love this piece. It takes me on a journey every time I hear it. Danny's drumming is just brilliant, and Adam does some very cool soundscaping on it. When I'm out running, and this track comes on, all the anguish of the workout slips away, and I become almost trancelike (I gotta watch out for trucks when this happens).

Epic and awe inspiring, in my humble opinion.

Anybody who considers this song "filler" needs to listen more closely.

Filler my fucking ass. Yeah, everybody is entitled to their own opinion, but my god... This song is the FURTHEST thing from filler.

You want filler?
Go listen to Viginti Tres.

i don't see why it was necessary to target viginit tres when there are the messages to harry manback, ions, mantra..

viginti is relatively good in my opinion..

this song pretty much is just filler to me..

the only tracks i consider to be truly fillers are -ions and useful idiot ,
whereas the later is a relatively ironic useful filler as it is a perfect segue-way into 46&2.
but yeah Merkaba is a great name for a song and a pretty interesting one at that too.

Great drumming. Has anyone else noticed this?

noticed this?????!!!
the drumming of Danny Carey is what makes Tool what it is (yes, the other three members are completely awsone too, but what if they had a mediocure drummer? they would have never been what they are today. my 2cents)

when i first got Salival i was exited to hear a drum solo by danny (i am a drummer and the main reason i like tool is the drumming)
it took me a while to be able to last through the whole track. i have to say i was kinda dissapointed at first with this song. he kinda goes nowhere with it for a while and all you hear is the samples of sombody yelling about a pyschedelic experience or something and danny hitting this one simmons pad with a sample of a bell or something. this kinda got on my nerves and i always skipped foward. but recently i listened all the way through and i do respect it more. All those sound effects are done by Danny with all his sampling units and electronic pads. alot of people dont realize that most of the extra effects in tool songs are done by danny, (although maynard uses the keyboard live i guess) and not overdubbed. thats saying alot right there.

I absolutely agree with you. In fact, this might be my favorite Tool ever. Love the jazz influence, and the improvisational sounds makes it special. Spiritual. The Aenima tour was fantastic.

yeah one of the tool's best tracks.

edit: wow..... i just found out that i've always thought that You Lied is Merkaba... my mp3 track names were wrong. now i understand why people have always said that Merkaba is a filler, though i don't think it is.
no it's not one of the tool's best tracks imo anymore hehe. i don't like the samples so much. it's good though.

Who said it was filler? Maybe I'm just stupid...

...but I didn't see anyone post that it actually was filler. They just said people think it is (which is a ridiculous thought).

If this was filler, why would there be guitars and drums going all out?

Heard about the merkabah about five or six years ago in Sedona. So I thought it was awsome they named a song after it.It has become a center in my life.

Merkaba is an amazing track.

It is one of those hypnotic tracks that you can zone out too, almost like the perfect backround music.

The reocurring repitition reverberates throughout your head.

If i had to describe it using an anology:

Its like "the throne-chariot of God"

Same. I have tried every which way to hear this. I (obviously) tried buying the whole album but it is very hard to get. Then I tried illegally downloading it and there must be - like - ONE person in the world sharing it on limewire.

WHERE can I find it - I don't fancy eBay. But I will if I have to. My son is a drummer and he really wants to hear it. Sigh.

So Ray Bourque, Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull, Theoren Fleury Sergei Fedorov..... Hunter S. thompson and many others are trying to stop Maynard James Keenan and his minions Jarri Kurri, Mark Messier, Patrick Roy.... from capturing the chosen one "Terrel Owens" and the biggest non-whore in the universe because MJK is going to throw them over Niagra Falls as an act to appease the Gods.

There's all sorts of car chases, boat chases, snowmobile accidents and lots and lots of explosions, also everybody is on ice skates for the entire movie/musical/love story and I'm going to give it to some chick (the biggest non-whore in the universe) I like because she makes me want to build a rocket ship and fire myself into the sun. Another way of saying it would be to say I want to climb to the top of a mountain in the middle of the night and scream her name at the moon, or go chase a tornado or something.

To describe her would be to say she is a mountain lion fighting an alligator inside of a tornado that is on fire.

you know how in close encounters of a third kind Richard Dreyfus is building the "devils tower" on his kitchen table but he doesn't know why. It's kind of the same thing, I'm building something that makes absolutely no sense and I have no idea why I'm doing it, it just seems like the thing to do. And it's really weird because I've created some elaborate artwork, the thing is I never have been an artist and don't really know how to draw anything. So where is it all coming from. Eventually I take some pictures of them and put them up here, maybe.

Two months ago I lost the cable from my camera to my computer. I've been a procrastinating lazy prick and haven't gone out to buy a new one because I was going to wait until the camera was full. It's full now and I'm buying a cable on Friday.

The five I'll try and post, I still don't know how to use that goddamn upload tool yet but I'll try are strange drawings of Rosetta Stoned, Schism, 46&2, Stinkfist and Lateralus. If could have found a place with a scanner that could do 11x17 they'd look a lot better, but my camera will have to do.

Merkaba is NOT a filler...great example of Tool's improvisational style. Still one of my very favorites.

for sure one of the greatest single pieces of music ever made. and i've always felt this way, before i even knew what Merkaba was. before i had astral journeys time after time aided by this song. before my DMT experiment using the song as a TOOL of sorts...

to people who say this song is a filler, i say you're right, it fills the entire BODY that IS this game we call life.

also to those who said they couldn't get through the whole song at first, same thing happened during my DMT experience...when i came back down the headphones really scared me or it's like i evolved away from them and the music during the real heavy part after the part where THE VOICE says "our bodies are light..." it was the strangest thing that ever happened to me.

this song holds a great amount of intention and power...

how can anyone think a TOOL song is filler? now i know not everyone has split a ten strip with pal and jammed tool all night, i realize that about most of you. but i'm not doing DeadHead chemistry all the time and i still see the purpose of each song and what can be done with all the pieces.

idk maybe i just respect Tool so much i give them too much credit when i shouldn't, but seriously TOOL TOOL TOOLtooltooltooltool...

what sample is used on 10k?

you mean the deep droning bass-sound? something similar is also happening at 6:25 min- i love that sound and wish i could`ve experienced it live- if you mean that: it sounds almost similar to the closing coffin at the and of wings part 2...or do you mean the the higher almost gamelan-like sounds ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KzNJwZkI4g )that are also appearing in rosetta stoned?
