View Full Version : I met Uncle Mark.

Yes, I know that Maynard released the lyrics, and that it said Uncle Martin, but after the encounter that I had after the Denver Tool show, I became convinced that in the live version it's Uncle Mark. Keep reading, I promise this is interesting.

Alright, picture this if you will;

10 to 2 am, x, yogi DMT, and a box of Krisy Kreams....Ok no, lol.

After the show, me and my buddy went out to where the tour buses were to maybe catch a glimpse of the band. The fucking security were pricks and didn't let anyone even stand near. Everyone had to "keep moving along." We kept walking back and forth. A little in front of the buses was a john deer kart, and this guy sitting at the concrete base of a light pole. We figured that he worked at the venue (because of the john deer) and asked him if we could sit there. He said sure. We asked if he worked there, he told us he didn't. But he told us he had a crazy story to tell us, and that we probably wouldn't believe him. He didn't sem like he was crazy or anything so I told him to shoot.

His story went something like this:

" I went to see Tool back in '98 at Red Rocks. Right before the show, everyone was rushing to get in, and they all passed by without noticing MAYNARD by the entrance. He was in full drag, so it was kinda hard to recognize him, but I did. We talked for about 15 minutes. I told him that I have a band, and he said that he could help me out if I gave him a demo. The problem was I didn't have a demo back then. But anyway, here's the awesome part. I suggested to him that he should cover John Lennon's Imagine, I even sang the off-tune version to him a little. 2005 comes around, and APC puts out Imagine. I was a in shock for the next 3 days after I heard that song. Then I also told him that Tool is so great, that even if they put out a song with "shit the bed" in the chorus, people would still buy it. 2006 comes around, you got Rosetta Stoned. Then we talked about my band a little again, and he said that he would write down my name and my number, but HE FORGOT HIS PEN."

When I heard this, I was like NO FUCKING WAY MAN. He said it's all true. For some strange reason I believe this guy 100%. I asked him his name, and he said it's Mark. I've always heard Uncle Mark when listening to Rosetta Stoned. Uncle Mark had a huge poster that said "MARK" just in case he saw Maynard. This time he had some demos, and he really wanted to let Maynard hear them.

Now for us, it wasn't even about meeting Maynard, it was about helping Uncle Mark out. We gathered a couple of people, and were trying to somehow get to the band. The security continued being major dicks. On a couple of occasions we tried to go to them and tell them Mark's story, but they would just escort us away from the tour busses. At one point, one of the dudes, Jason (who has seen tool a lot before and got to talk to Maynard before) saw that there were no security, so he went straight to the tour buses, he saw Maynard and called out to him, but the prick just went straight to his bus, and a security guard pushed jason back.

Well we were there for about 3 hours, all that happened was that jason and some other chick got to chill with Isis for a few, and some dude with VIP came out and claimed to be Danny's cousin. I'm not very sure if he was. He had a slight resemblence. He said his name was Paul. Uncle Mark gave him one of the demos, cuz he said that he might get it to Maynard. Another one went to a truck driver for Tools equipment, and another one went to the security guard. Hope one of them somehow gets to Nardo.

Wow, that was amazing. Amazing that I actually convinced myself one of anarcho-commie's posts would be worth reading. Two questions:

1. How could you possibly believe this?

2. You seriously spent THREE HOURS hanging out with this douche?

Thanks for shaving a few minutes off my life, dude.

I agree that you have the freedom of speech to post this here, nevermind those parentless people, they don't know how to form sentences, they don't think about what others think if they say something.

While I still think your story is rubbish, seems like a total bag of shit that guy told you or you're telling us, which I doubt.

Everything has its sense and this doesn't follow the pattern. For example the "shit the bed" thing. According to Alex Grey it's about a friend of Maynard that shat the bed. This and the fact that it's about Tool being able to say everything don't match up.

Several summers ago, I went to the Summer Sanitarium Tour here in Houston, Texas, during of which, Mudvayne played. Among the several pot-smelling fans I chatted with, I met one of them who solemnly stated he it was he who had suggested to Chad Grey (the vocalist) to perform without all the body makeup, and that the song "Silenced" was based on a poem and a riff that he himself had proposed to the band.

Flash forward half a year. I went to Linkin Park's Meteora Tour. As I was waiting outside for the doors to open, I started talking to a gothed-out couple who talked about how they had travelled with the band on their previous tour and that they knew them intimately. (What's funny is I find out later that their seats were in the third balcony, nosebleed section.)

I went to System of a Down last year. I got there early enough to spend a good three hours talking to some people who were waiting as well. There were two girls there who had Serj Tankian's (the vocalist) face plastered on their shirts. Apparently, they were dead-convinced that all three of them were siblings in a past life. No joke; they placed their lives on the betting table for the faith of that notion.

I believe you really met this guy. And I believe that he really did tell you these things. Unfortunately, rock concerts of big names bring out all the fans, temperate and delusional alike. I have a hard time believing the validity of his account.

Not really. You have to actually prove that it's true. We have every right to say it's not true. I can say that Elephants dream about Unicorns all day. The possibilty of that being true is not the same as it not being true. I would actually have to provide evidence and facts to support my case. Others have every right to say that what I said isn't true b/c I didn't say anything to support it. The general assumption is that they don't dream about Unicorns all day, so it's me that actually has to prove something. The other people are the ones recieving the proof and judging for themselves whether or not I'm right.

Alright, I have no acutal proof but here goes.

I attended the red rocks show in '98. And I know for a fact that Maynard had been standing at the gates in drag. I remember it very clearly, because I pointed out the lady to my friend, because "she" looked really out of place and was just standing there and kinda looked like a "he". I remember that I had gotten in and security was harassing my friend about something, and I had to step aside to wait and tried to see what "it" was without staring.

Anyway, when Maynard came on that night in drag we both looked at each other and knew that "woman" had been Maynard. I have always been on the look out for him every show since. I saw them at the pepsi center in denver, maynard was just off stage left most of the show with a huge dildo. Closet I've come since.

I am sure my ticket stub is in a box at my parents house somewhere. I can't believe it has been about 8 years ago.. I am from colorado, lived in auroa, went to smoky hill at the time, college at ft lewis. Got nothing to really prove it happened.

I also have always thought that the recording of pushit on salival was from that show.. I recall that right before that he mentioned something about someone just having a baby. It was a kind of back handed congradulations.

I guess that might be worth some evidence if anyone else was there too and can remember that far back..... Or if anyone knows if they ever said where the live recordings where done.

I am pretty sure about pushit being at the 98 redrocks show.. It was a sureal exsperiance and everytime I hear it, the memory of the show comes back in great detail.

There are a few entrances to Red Rocks. I am pretty sure I remember which entrance this was at. If your unkle mark mentioned it..

I doubt he would be singing along, It had to be one of the first times they played that version.
Unrelated, durring the song the crowd was very very quite. Which played no small part in the sureal feeling I had there. Not to mention the perfectly clear sky, and the awesome accoustic properties of redrocks. Man..

I believe that this happened to you, but I'd say that this guy is bullshitting. Even so, how would Maynard remember this? He's played hundreds of concerts since that night, and talked to many many more fans since that night. Exactly how this would stick in his memory for 8 years puzzles me. This conversation between Mark and Maynard can't have been THAT significant, so significant that he'd reference it several times in a song 8 years later.
