"but i'd trade it all for just a little peace of mind...pushit on me pushit on me pushit on me pushit on me you're pushin, shovin, scramblin(?), [seven completely unintelligible syllables]"
after peace of mind none of the lyrics pages even address that whole part

... to keep my feet flat on the ground?
I thought I heard him saying "keep my 11 on the ground," which would make it a parallel to the song "Jimmy" of course if this was accurate.

I definitely hear "to keep my feet flat on the ground"
I definitely hear "to keep my feet flat on the ground"
I don't hear that at all.

to keep my feet level on the ground...
... now listen to it again, you'll know i'm right
to keep my feet level on the ground...
... now listen to it again, you'll know i'm right
Listen to his diction again because he does not pronounce "feet" anywhere in that segment. He's saying "keep my 11 on the ground." This song runs parallel to "Jimmy."

i will... and then i'll still know i'm right

what kind of crazy is that tho...c'mon kid

Listen to "Jimmy" and you'll realize that 11 is a metaphor, personified in the song "Jimmy" and on this song too. Maynard wants his present self to reunite with his disoriented past and ascend. Thats why the "keep my 11 on the ground" line is not just a bunch of hot air.

I can't tell what it is but don't think either of the things suggested here are right. too many syllables in the 11 one, and I don't hear the second 'f' sound in the 'feet flat' one.

saw that gap again today
while you were beggin me to stay
take care not to make me enter
cause if i do we both may dissapear
you know that i will choke until i swallow
choke this infant here before me
what is this but my reflection
who am i to judge or strike you down?
but you're pushin, shovin... ect
you still love me, you still love me, pushit on me, pushit on me
rest your trigger on my finger
bang my head upon the fault line
you better take care not to make me enter
cause if i do we both may dissapear
but you're pushin, shovin, ect..
slippin back into the gap again
i'm alive when you're touching me
alive when you're shoving me down
but i'd trade it all for just a little piece of mind
pushit on me x N
you're pushin, and shovin, and scramblin
to keep my feet level on the ground
i am somewhere I don't wanna be blah blah
never wanna see that place again
saw that gap again today
while you were begging me to stay
managed to push myself away
and you as well my dear
if when i say i may fade like a sigh if I stay
you minimize my movement anyway
i must persuade you another way
pushin, shovin, there's no love in fear
starin down the hole again
hands are on my back again
survival is my only friend
terrified of what may come
remember i'll always love you
as i tear your fuckign throat away
it will end no other way

I clearly hear "keep my feet flat on the ground" that's seven syllables, I don't hear the "to" at the beginning of that, but it's probably just less audible to me

"Pushit on me,
Pushit on me,
Pushit on me,
You're pushin,
Shovin',
Scramblin',
[But I'll]* keep my feet level on the ground . . ."
To me, it's definitely "level."

I hear "keep my feet flat on the ground", definitely. I used to hear a "to" at the beginning of that line but I think I just thought I heard it because it's implied. I don't hear "eleven" or "level". But hey more power to us for hearin what we hear.

listen to it, level has 2 syllables, if you listen hard the word is 1 syllable which makes it closer to flat than level

i'm listining to it right now "level" wouldn't make sense, listen to is starting at 3:50, try saying " keep my feet level on the ground" along with it, there is only one syllable, level is TWO syllables

I still hear "level"... even with headphones. There's no "F" sound to make "flat." There is the "L" sound though, so I'm really sold on it being "level." He just says it quick so it sounds like one syllable.
Although I just watched a live recording and he most definitely said "flat"... so I dunno. :/

i didn't say the meaning doesn't make sense, the fact that level has one more syllable than flat, so that would make it an 8 syllable phrase and its 7

cuz i have listened to the aenima one, and i would put my life on "flat"

Yeah, the Aenima version. I hear it as "level" on the record. Come to think of it, in production they may have edited out that dreaded "FFFF" sound that comes through on the mic... that may account for why we're having this discussion.

Alright... just listened to another live recording, and it's undeniably "flat." Untill I hear a live recording where it sounds like "level," I'm gonna go ahead and assume it wasn't a flash of inspiration that made Maynard change the word at the last second for the recording.

*cough* Anyway, here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxnGRdy2SYs) of the song before Aenima was released... doesn't even sound like Maynard knows what he's saying. It is very possible that it was "level" originally, made it on to the recording, and later decided "flat" sounded better (?)
I still hear "level" on the recording.

i also have a bootleg cd that has pu shit (yes there was a space between) an it is also flat, you can tell on this one cuz adam comes just 1/2 a second late on the note/chord that he plays at the same time. so maynard is kinda solo and you can hear flat easly
toolrox19

Choke this infant here before me.

Pushing and shoving me.

But you're pushing me,
Shoving me. Pushit on me.
Slipping back into the gap again.
I'm alive when you're touching me,
Alive when you're shoving me down.
But i'd trade it all
For just a little bit of
Piece of mind.
Put me somewhere I don't wanna be.
Seeing someplace I don't wanna see.
Never wanna see that place again.
Saw that gap again today
As you were begging me to stay.
Managed to push myself away,
And you, as well.
If, when I say I may fade like a sigh if I stay,
You minimize my movement anyway,
I must persuade you another way.
There's no love in fear.
Staring down the hole again.
Hands upon my back again.
