Simply Amazing. The band came on the stage at 9:12, and Adam, Danny, and Justin walked off at 11:02. Maynard left a bit early, while the rest of the guys waved to the crowd. The show was amazing, I was expecting something close to the Houston show. We got a good amount of songs, Maynard sang pretty much every line. He wasn't too talkative, until the end when he was talking about having to piss really bad... he even changed the lyrics in AEnema between the "fuck retro anything" etc. parts from "Learn to swim" to "Got to piss!" All in all, an amazing, unexpected performance, they played Wings! A big fuck you goes all to all the bastards who were screaming during the song... they're are times at a concert when it's appropriate to be quiet, and that was one of them. Maynard sold his part pretty well, while he was singing he looked very solemn; whether that's actually how he was feeling or not I couldn't tell you, but it made the song even more awesome for me.

Wings, bitches!

Seriously though, amazing show. MJK was animated, energetic, and sounded great. What a night.

Yup, MJK had to piss. And mentioned it over and over again.

Wings/10K Days was absolutely AMAZING live. I even started to cry at one point.

Setlist posted above is correct.

Show started at about 9:14 and ended at 11:00. Really a great show considering all that has been going on with Maynard lately, and the setlist was better, and longer, than I think most people expected. Maynard was fairly active, and made a few funny comments, such as:

FYI, I AM STILL SICK!
"This is the last song" was said after each of the last 3 songs.
"I really have to take to take a piss" was said about 5 times.
I'm about to piss everywhere so we're going to need another Noah's Arc.

The sound was good, not the best ever, but acceptable. The vocals and Adam were pretty clear, but I think Justin was turned DOWN considerably compared to the McFarlin show (odd, I know). Maybe Justin just wasn't as CRISP as I remember him being at McFarlin, though he was still INCREDIBLE to watch. Also, Maynard sang about 99.9 percent of the lyrics, so seems he's back on track with that.

To the bastard that basically took Justin's pick from me...well, consider yourself lucky to have it. I had my eye on that pick on the ground for 5 minutes and nobody knew it was there, I just couldn't reach over to get it without getting stomped on.

By the way, 10K Days and Wings were probably the most magical songs I've ever heard played at any concert.

Goddamn fucking amazing.

Highlights.

*All of wings and 10,000 days. perfect.
*the new projections for Rosetta Stoned!!
*The new version of schism with the fast breakdown!!
*FUCKING LAZERS, MAN!
*The hammer and chisel spiral of bodies hammering the third eye of the other! that was amazing.
*maynard's 'Gotta piss' on Aenema.
*The joints that kept getting passed to me. Thanks dude, whoever you are!
*The whole new light setup... everything is perfect. they use arenas as a fucking canvas.

This show was fucking amazing. great crowd. great performance. Maynard was trying his best and he did a fucking amazing job. he cracked his voice a couple times and had to stop through a verse on a couple songs, but he always came back quick. the music was so tight. my second favorite tool concert!!!! i cant wait for their second US tour! FUCKING AMAZING!!!!

I wish i didnt miss Isis though... that dissapointed me. but i quickly forgot about that when the blacklights came on for stinkfist to start.

For the love of God, please tell me someone got some recordings or pictures of this show.

I just wanted to add that ISIS was pretty good too. I could do without the occasional screamo vocals, but overall they were good, and I hope more people check them out.

Another thing...Maynard did something that I have NEVER seen him do. He literally walked off his platform and went straight to the very front of the stage. He stood right next to Justin and sang for about 30 seconds at the front. I thought that was pretty nifty.

Just got back home from the show. Poured a glass of port and started typing this review.

There will be probably 300 posts about how great the show was, the set list, the frickin' laser beams...

What is hard to describe, though, is the energy of the show. From start to finish.

For one thing, the security there was great. Very friendly, easy-going, helpful, positive...much unlike the horror stories out of Houston. The crowd was also great. Very into the show without being belligerent or violent (a la Phoenix).

I don't know what show Phoenix and Houston were watching when Isis was onstage...but the negative reviews are COMPLETELY unfounded. They were really good...fun band to watch. KC fans should show up early and give them a chance.

After Stinkfist, Maynard mentioned that he was still sick, and then went right into The Pot. ATF jacket and all. Probably one of the toughest vocal songs for them to do. I don't know what it was about that song for them--whether it was the crowd response, or the fact that they did it so cleanly--but it was a complete turn-around from the past week of underwhelming performances. He shed the jacket shortly after and did the bulk of the show wearing nothing but jeans with a big belt buckle and a cowboy hat.

At one point during Rosetta Stoned, Justin motioned to Adam to look around the arena at the sea of lighters. As cliche as the lighter thing is, they seemed to enjoy it.

Before the encore, they sat on Maynard's platform and just looked around at the lighters that were out again. Talked back and forth a bit. Then Maynard said he had to piss so they were only going to play half a song. They did Lateralus, Vicarious, and Aenema as the encore. Incredible encore. Immediately on finishing Aenema (fuck these disfunctional, insecure urinals...have to piss...have to piss...have to piss...) Maynard took off, presumably to piss. But the rest of the band hung around for a long time, laughing, hugging... I saw Danny say to Adam and Justin, "That was fucking great". I think they appreciated the positive and respectful response from the crowd, and they needed it as well.

I've seen them play five times now. For whatever reason, this was the most energetic, most positive, and the most genuine fun they've ever seemed to have here. Anyone who's been in a band and played a series of below-par songs at a show, or a bad series of shows, can testify that it sucks the energy out of the live performance. But all it takes is one well-performed song to get the feeling back. I think for Tool, for this tour, The Pot was that song, and this was that show.

Leaving for ACL tomorrow morning. KC enjoy the show.

FYI... Maynard was still sick... but he was there.

I drank so much at the concert that by the end of the show I had to piss so bad that instead of singing "Learn to swim" I could only say "Got to piss... Got to piss.. Got to piss..."

Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss....

This was an amazing show to say the very least. Missed Isis, but that's okay. Section 117, row N. Everyone in the arena seemed to be having a good time, seems the band was feeding off the energy the crowd was exuding, which many in our section were fucking rabid.

Technically, they were tight as could be. The only criticism I would mention is the sound quality. During Stinkfist, the sound was a bit muddy, and Justin wasn't coming thru. THruout the show, everything was crisp and bright, but it seemed at times that there was no back end, and in some instances, sounded like they were on a transistor radio. For whatever reason, the sound was adjusted before The Pot, then after Wings, it seemed worse than it was before. But I digress...

All in all and never the less, I'm fucking hoarse now. Gonna be hating it at werk tomorrow, but fuckit, I got to see my favourite fucking band in the world.

Holy....MOTHER OF GOD.....PERFECT SHOW.

Absolutely flawless from the get-go. Not one single missed noted, or anything, Maynard hit EVERY single note in each song. Every single member of the band was on FIRE tonight. Nothing rushed, sharp, flat, out of time. Just perfect, insanely amazing visuals of course. The lasers were making weird shapes every occasionally. When the lasers would split up into a crapload of them, there were projections within the lasers!!!!!

Oh and BTW, I was in section 219, Row A, Seat 16-PERFECT view.

Awesome show!!! The highlight for Me, my daughter and her friend were when we were walking up from the construction area, free parking lot down the road before we crossed the street (across from the west entrance) we ran into Danny. He was walking alongside his bike with a security guard (I'm guessing) and my daughter recognizes him and says "Danny Carey! HI!!!" and he said "Hi, what's up". We were face to face with him. It was amazing. That's about the extent of it, but it absolutely made our day.

I thought Maynard did a TERRIFIC job on vocals. I know he said he was still sick but he sounded great to me. And I'm so glad they played as many songs as the did. I was really worried it would be short or the crowd would be doing more singing than Maynard. Not so. I'm just still in Awe.

Our seats were not nearly as bad as I thought they were going to be either (111, S). Once we got in there I knew they would be fine. I was a little worried that this guy up above and behind us that kept hanging over the rail and being really loud was going to be annoying through the whole show but (like they were during ISIS) but once Tool started I heard nothing more from him.

ISIS was great too. I'd never heard anything from them before tonight but I liked what I heard. The first song, I got a Pink Floyd kind of vibe from them, then Alice in Chains during the second song. But all in all, they had a very good sound. I definately will be checking out more from them. And I'm glad we got there in time to see them. We sat down about 5-10 minutes before they started.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great time and got home safely. I look forward to reading everyone's reviews. But for now, I gotta go to bed so I can get up at 5 a.m.

They sounded really great, as always. Adam, Danny and Justin were flawless. Maynard was incredibly good for how sick he was. He left a few "screams" out, but thats understandable. I was a bit upset to not hear Sober, but it wasnt my fav song so it was all good. I was really happy that this Dallas crowd didnt ruin anything by being complete fuktards.

Did anybody else see Maynard

A. Come off his platform and walk around the stage. (rare)

and

B. Grab Justin's ass as he stroled around during Rosetta.

Anyone but me notice this?

09-14-2006, 10:31 PM
I saw that

I thought thr best moment was when Maynard said "I'm still sick, but I'm still here". He kinda did with a stance like he was standing his ground against all the people who were complaining that he was sorry.

Oh yeah, him flashing the "weak" symbol at the end of Lateralus???

He also made a comment that the tickets said to bring no cameras but to make sure and bring a raft in case of "Maynard's Flood"

I saw him walk around the stage. Reminded me of the Aenima tour where he was out front pretty much the whole time. Didn't notice him grabbing Justin's ass although my wife mentioned it after the show.

I remind you, these are shitty, shitty, shitty, camera phone pictures, that do not justify the actuallity of the beautifully breathtaking visuals.

Good golly that was a good rock and roll concert. I think they had way too much compression on Danny and Justin. The sound could have been a lot better. But at this point, I don't really care. This made up for McFarlin something FIERCE. I had a smashing time at the show and enjoyed some spiffy personal moments.

I give it a 8.5/10 - 1.5 for the sound, SRSLY.

Maynard seemed very up tonight, I would never had known he had even been sick.

By the way, the ISIS set was pretty awesome. They are an act to see live. the ebtire show was great, at least until Aemina onslaught.

I'mnot sure if anyone noticed, but all the green lasers from the front and back of the stadium together seemed to form the shape of danny's 7-point star the first song they used them on (jambi??)

Don't believe that you won't enjoy the graphic show from the floor!!

The graphics for wings and rosetta were tight as shit.

During 10,000 Days, it looks like maynard is bing sucked down a vortex thats centered on him. Everyone had me prepared for a tamer than usual or even disappointing show, but I don't even know how this show could've been any better.

I couldn't mentally comprehend how awesome the add-ins on the old songs were---just rip and shred, and llights to match. It was like couldn't actually believe what you were hearing and seeing.

Sorry SA, I think they took a couple days off to make sure they were over-the-top for us.

I couldn't here Danny's runs at points [ : ( ] but I thought it was because I was too close to the speakers

It sounded like they were starting Right in Two at the beginning of Vicarious, i think we almost got an extra song.

OK WHAT SUUUUUUCKED---

Overpriced gear and lack of it

Justin played the bass with a Pilsner bottle after he downed it

What an amazing show...extended stinkfist, new intro to 46&2, extended super drum solo in the middle of Schism, Lost Keys & Wings...fucking A (best 25 minutes ever) 'I'm praying for urinals...gotta piss gotta piss gotta piss...funny stuff. "You may have noticed on your ticket that there are no cameras allowed...it also says you need to have an ark in case Maynard pisses himself" quote of the night: What's Up Texas?

BTW...I had a long ass drive down to Austin before figuring out SA was cancelled...Looking forward to the rescheduled date!!! Right in Two if we're lucky!

It sounded like they were starting Right in Two at the beginning of Vicarious, i think we almost got an extra song.

I heard that too, then they changed it up...didn't see the obligatory 'nod' to change it up...and I didn't see the setlest. Worst thing about AAC is the band leaves underground...no chance to say 'hello'. Still can't believe how good that show was after what I heard about Houston...Now I feel bad for the poor bastards.

4th show. AWESOME.

The Good:
vocals were "DEAD ON"- No missed lyrics. Hit all high notes. Perfect RS screams
Band was "DEAD ON"-very tight, Adam didn't F/U anything. Justin was unconcious.
Security was cool
No moshers
Crowd was good
Maynard gave a brave and excellent show even though he was still sick
Watching Maynard do his signature moves
Maynards tear-drop Rayban Sunglasses
The "Sea" of lighters during RS, and the "break"

The not-so good:
Lots of the crowd left for drinks and restroom break during Wings (pt. 1&2)
Seemed like the crowd knew only the "hits" and didn't appreciate the experience as a whole
Because the stage was so big, I felt the band was a little distant with each other
Maynard was still sick :(
The sound was not nearly as loud as all other shows I have seen. Don't get me wrong, it WAS LOUD. Just not as loud as previous shows

Maynardisms:
"FYI-I'm still sick........but I'm fucking here"
"I gotta piss.......I ain't even joking"
"I gotta cut the show short cause I gotta piss. This will be our last song, and we are only going to play half of it" They continued to play 3 songs without interruption.

Coolest thing I saw at the show:
The (HOT) lipstick lesbians seated all over the place. Holding hands and rubbing and singing to each other.

The WIERDEST thing I saw at the show:
A fat dude wearing a Grateful Dead type of "Tye-Dye" tee shirt and WEARING A STAR WARS FULL FACIAL HELMET during the entire show. He was in the lower bowl on Justins side of the stage. Did anybody else see him?

Getting to see Wings (Pt 1 & 2) was as good as it gets. So tight, emotional, and absolutely PUMMELING.

Some cool BAND stuff:
Justin playing the bass with a water bottle. Made some really unusual sounds.
Maynard coming to the front of the stage and singing alongside Justin, then GRABBING JUSTINS ASS and both of 'em laughing as Maynard kept singing and strutted away.
During RS Maynard kept "trying" to set his water bottle down on an imaginary table. It would hit the floor, bounce, then he would pick it up and walk in circles dropping it again and again.........hilarious! He never missed a note the entire time.

All-in-all, I am extremely pleased with the show. It was alot different than the other shows I have seen.......I will certainly have to take a few days to fully digest it all.........

The guy sitting next to me took a ton of pics and video (we were sitting about 20-30 feet from the stage on Adams side. 3rd row up by the rail in the lower bowl! ). He was using a real camera (not a cell phone), so I anticipate they will come out great. He promised to e-mail them to me. I will post them as soon as I get 'em.

Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!

There does seem to be much more to add, but I will say it was an awesome show. Due to the acoustics , it was pretty hard to hear any singing, or really any separation of the instruments at the beginning of Wings. Eventually, it started to clear up in my ears, and it couple with 10,000 Days was phenomenal. The new visuals really added to what I saw at the McFarlin show earlier in the year.

For what it's worth, here are the songs Isis played. My first time seeing them live but I have been listening to them for a while. They did well, and enough people around me seemed to enjoy them, albeit unsure of how to actually react.

1) So Did We - Off of Panopticon
2) Dulcinea - From the new album, In The Absence of Truth
3) 1000 Shards - Off the new album
4) Holy Tears - Again, off the new album

Hope this helps anyone interested in checking them out.

But getting to hear wings and 10x days was efin amazing. 10,000 days is my favourite tool song these days, the lyrics get me everytime. My cousin went with us, who is a redneck, and this was his first tool, hell first rock concert, and at first he was reserved, but by schism he was throwin up the rock fist with all of us and headbanging away :D

Great that we got wings of Marie and 10,000 days...As a fan who has seen Tool a lot of times....I was a bit dissapointed b/c I had already heard every other song live besides Wings/10,000 Days...

Dont get me wrong they still rock and I still enjoy them but just not as much as when you see a band and have no idea whats comming next.

In the end, I dont complain that much b/c I know that they're so old and still rocking out.

Highlights were the Talk box solo on Jambi all the way to the end of the song..

Rossetta Stoned fucking woooped fucking ass the whole way through.

The Pot is always a badass live song to hear.

There was a lot of energy in "Forty Six & Two"...I've seen this song live twice before but this one was much better for some reason...Guess they perfected that shit,

Lateralus was the track that brought the fucking house down....It always seems to do that...thats a song I'll never get tired of hearing live.

Vicarious was fucking great as usual.....ESPECIALLY the fucking ending...It blows your mind live!

BUT, the fucking best song of the night HAD to go to Wings for Maire/10,000 Days...It's called 10,000 Days,...and that fucking song is 10,000 TIMES better live... Like someone mentioned before there is a spotlight JUST shining on him, hes got his Keyboard and his voice...And he pulled it off so fucking great...That song should only fucking be heard LIVE...The album version doesnt do the live version justice. I almost want to put it infront of when I heard "Undertoe" or Eulogy" live...but those are classics to me so it is hard to decide which is the best Tool songs I've ever heard live....But. thats just how god damn good this song is live... I mean the part where he goes "Judith Marie !!! UNCONDITIONAL OOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEEEE" made me fucking have an orgasm...

The lights/lazers were fucking trippy/Went along with the music/And were just plain badass.

Normal Maynard Humour...

"F.Y.I. - I'm still sick."

At the end he mentioned he had to piss and after sitting down with the band in the front came back and said "Ok Im gonna do half of a song" ....But was obviously joking and came back with the full encore. lol, and like between every encore song he kept persitting he had to piss....I know that wasnt true. After seeing him live so many times and knowing his dark-sarcastic humour you get to see that almost 80% of what he says live is just him fucking around...That's why I love the guy... He's a funny fuck.

Overall, I was in the pit....which was seated....(I know it was weird to me too)...I've never been to see a band in the pit to walk in and see seats there...But me and my friend were actually in the back of the pit (But before the show we figured itd be a normal pit so we could push our way to the front) But then we just said fuck it and went to some seats a fucking LOT closer and nobody came to those seats..haha...And we'd just keep moving to every couple of empty seats closer up...SO it kinda worked out...hahaha.....

And yes, I was one of the people who fucking rushed the front of the stage during the beginning of Aenima (I imagine everyone already knew this was there last song b/c Maynard said "GoodNight" and I know when he says that its over) but I barely got past the fucking security gaurd and I was like five feet from the stage...It was the closest I've ever been to them....I mean we were close in our PIT seats before, But here I was so close It was like seeing a band in a garage...well a big gartage...It was fucking awesome...

The energy was amazing, wings for Marie/10,000 Days was some of the best music I've EVER heard live...Dont know if I'll ever see that performed ever again..One can only hope, right? Overall the show was fucking badass...I mean, it's fucking tool...My only complaint is fuck...honestly change some songs on the setlist here and there...

I mean older shit, like instead of Forty Six & Two or Aenima play Jimmy/pushit/or H. for fucks sake...Or instead of Stinkfist play something off of Undertow...Or fuck...play a rarity like Intension off of 10,000 Days ATLEAST if you're not going to switch anything else...My overall point is...The show has a much more magical feel to it and lasts longer in memory if there is something special to it...The only thing we got special was "Wings/10,000 Days" ...Everything else might be fucking magical/amazing for a person seeing Tool for the first time...But not us old school fans who are used to the random setlists and the fans who love your whole catalog of music...Not just the recent shit and the hits...That's just my two cents on it...Speaking as a musician....

I didnt want to complain I was actually just trying to give constructive criticism...

I still love tool, and I still loved the fucking Tool show...It was fucking great....I still go see Tool despite whatever they play b/c it's fucking Tool...And I owe that much to them for giving me some of the greatest music ever played.

Great night.

Cheers

My biggest complaint about the show had nothing to do with the band and everything to do with the AAC. Whoever had the idea to put seats on the floor (where the pit usually is) should be fired. Not that I missed the pit- because I thought it would be cool, but anyone who was more than one or two sections back couldn't see shit. It's a flat floor and the stage was low. PLUS I had the worlds tallest dude in front of me. He had to be like 6'5''. I had a half assed view before he showed up- then I couldn't see much of anything unless I stood ON the chair, which security was NOT cool with. I don't blame them, but I have to say that sucked and I'll never get floor tickets again. I thought Maynard sounded great for being sick, other than that, pretty much the same as everyone else- sound was pretty good but not perfect, setlist was good, I dunno though, I think I liked the show in Ft. Worth better. It was a good show because it was a tool show, but not my favorite tool show to date.

wow. good show. havent seen so much energy in a crowd before. theres moments of almost sublime like nirvana (10K days, Lateralus, LOST KEYS to Rosetta Stoned.

Danny is probably one of the best drummers ive had the pleasure of watchin.

some treble issues towards the end, really loud just sounded really shrill.

also kind of bummer nothing from opiate/undertow was played.

$20 to park my car in a space for 3 hours kind of blows.

oh well....fuckin amazing, even when mjk is sick.

here to the next time...

OMG what an awsome show. I was really worried that Maynard was going to be too sick to pull it off, but he came through. Maynard started out a little weak but finished strong. Wings rocked live!!

Things I noticed:

Maynard said "I'm still sick, so suck my dick. Hey, that rhymed".

Justin missed some notes on Schism.

Maynard grabbed Justins ass on Rosetta Stoned when he started walking around the stage.

After the short intermission Maynard said "Lets make this quick, I really need to piss". "No I'm being serious".

Before Lateralus Maynard said "Ok, we are going to play a half song and then I got to go. Literally. I got to piss." And some people started booing.

After Lateralus Maynard said "Goodnight." and it looked like Adam was confused. He stood there for a minute looking at Maynard and when he figured out he was joking he got ready for the next song.

Maynard said "I have to piss so bad that if I go right now it would be like Noah's Ark." He said something about cameras, tickets, and taking pictures of the boat but I don't remember exactly what he said.

Maynard Changed the lyrics on Anemia. He said "Got to piss, got to piss. F**k these dysfunctional, I need a urinal. Got to piss. Got to piss. Got to piss".

After the show when the band stayed for the traditional wave to the crowd and throw danny's drum heads Maynard ran off the stage as soon as the last song was over.

If I remember anything else I'll post some more. Thanks Tool!

edit: Oh yeah, I forgot about the American Pshyco quote when he said he had to go because he needs to return some video tapes.

I'd like to add a couple more things...

For the record, Justin plays Wings/10k Days with a pick. He does not use his fingers like some have previously claimed. Well, at least live he uses a pick.
TO those who think they were thinking about playing RIGHT IN TWO...you might be right, but I seriously doubt they would play a 4 song encore, especially since they haven't played a 4 song encore at ANY show in 2006. I guess we'll never know.

I THINK the visuals shown during Vicarious might be from the music video for the song. Obviously I'm not sure of this.

fuckbrokers obviously wasnt at the same show as the rest of us :) and why so much hostility man?? like you said its only a couple of rock songs, quit your bitching, no one here wants to hear negative bullshit, and besides, music effects different people in different ways, so witness the beauty however u may and we will all do the same........and all i have to say for this show - GODDAMN. Isis to begin with was great. I hadnt really listned to much of their music, but they do a great job especially live. one of the band members switches between a keyboard and a guitar, added to 2 other guitars, bass, and drums. they do sing but really its a lot of cool instrumental ambiences that surge up and down. i suggest making it to the show early to see them......

on to TOOL.....

these guys are ridiculous. my third show personally and they never fail to bring it. wings/10,000 days is definitly one of their greatest live songs. of course on CD its great, but you have to see them play it live to really do the song justice. same with rosetta, and when they played Lateralus, you could just feel the entire arena bursting with an explosion of energy. i was inspired. Stinkfist, one of my favorites, its a great opener in my opinion, they could open with that every time and i would be happy. great setlist, especially with the new songs from 10,000 days.

Justin is a wicked bass player. Adam shreds (he does a lot of cool shit live that u cant really get on a recording also, his guitar powers into each new song/segment like a macheti just chopping ahead thru silence!). Danny is probably the best drummer ive ever seen, hands down. and he doesnt even flinch!! and maynard, well fuck its maynard. he was great sick or not (didnt seem too sick, but he mentioned he was), and i do believe he sang every note of every song and very well i might add. FUCKIN TOOL

ok i was in section 105 just to the right of the stage and i was doing my thing, rockin out.......about halfway thru 10,000 days some fucking idiot chunked a beer from i guess the second level and it fucking hit me, and a few other people around me as well. what an ass hole. i had no desire to even try to look around to see who it was (since like i said it was mid 10,000 days), but who does that?!?! especially when a beer cost 7 dollars. dipshit. i got my satisfaction as seconds later maynard broke out with "ignorant fibbers in the congregation...." different meaning but still worked for me. spare me.

all in all, other than the beer throwing dumbass from the second level section, there is nothing negative whatsover that can be said about this show in my opinion. they came, we saw, THEY ROCKED OUR ASS. If only there could be more fine musicians like this nowdays......guess we better get to work!!

spiral out motherfucks~

ONE MORE THING.....

the spaced out intro to Vicarious....awsome! i really had no idea where it was headed then suddenly here comes Adam with his blade......

the "intension"-esque intro they expiramented with as well, very cool

AND maynard is sick, probably been drinking a lot of fluids, i think he was serious about his pissing business :)

Hmm.

I'm listening to 10,000 Days right now, and he's chicken picking. There's no way he's playing that with a pick.

^Honestly, I thought he used his fingers too, but he definately used a pick for last night's version. I was 20 feet away from him, so it was pretty obvious to me he was using a pick.

Perhaps he uses a pick only for the live version just to get the bassline to stand out a litle more.

JamesDavid4th

yeah i saw justin using a pick as well, and i think with the whole "eye of the storm" approach to starting the song off quieter and bringing the rockage up as it goes, the pick allows him to better accentuate the bass line "clean and crisp" as opposed to if he was just fingering the bass, i think then it would have sounded too muddy and muttled. as far as the recorded version it doesnt really sound like hes using a pick to me

he used his fingers (at least for the begining). i was in the front row about 15 feet away.

now the review...

Seat: Section 11, Row A, Seat 7 (front row, about 10 feet from the stage)

This was my third Tool show and my second favorite. I was able to get a front row ticket for face value from a fellow member of www.toolnavy.com (thanks Randie!!!). I have never been this close during a Tool show for and it was awesome.

First things first; the music. As you can see from the set list they mainly played songs from the new album, which is to be expected. I would have liked a little more variety, but it was great seeing the new material live. Highlights for me were 46+2 (which I had never seen live before) and Jambi. They played both flawlessly. I was glad too see Wings/10k Days although the crowd did seem a little bored during it. Maynard was still sick but put on a good show none the less. He didnt hit all of the notes and left out a line or two but still did a damn fine job. Danny killed as usual, as did Justin and Adam. As a bassist it was very cool to be so close to Justin. Watching him play makes me just want to give up because i know I'll never be that good, haha. One of the best parts of the show was near the end. Maynard complained about having to piss. During Aenima he changed the lyrics from "learn to swim" to "got to piss." It added some welcome humor to the performance.

The stage set up was pretty damn cool. They had decent lighting with some lasers. As usual they had some pretty cool videos playing but this time they used the entire stage as a big projection screen. I couldnt see it well from so close up, but its a pretty badass idea. Otherwise, the set up was fairly simple but effective.

Overall is was an excellent show. I give it an A.

The guy I was with managed the setlist and Right in Two was not on it. They played the setlist exactly as it was printed.

I won't spend too much time on a review, a lot of people have already posted their thoughts. Going back and listening to a recording of the show confirms what I thought during the show. Maynard was as tight as he has been in recent years. He will likely never regain his power from pre-1998 however, this was the best show I have seen since. My 8th show and this was likely #3 in terms of overall performance. Justin continues to amaze me, and this time Danny did not steal the show like he did earlier this year at McFarlin. Adam was certainly much better than the mini-tour as was Maynard. Justin and Danny are consistent every single night, you just can't improve upon what they do it seems.

Here are the real quotes so people can stop misquoting:

"F...Y...I... I'm still sick, but I'm here"

"What's up Texas. I'm not from, sorry."

"Let's make this quick I have to piss. I'm not kidding. I'm gonna do half a song then I gotta go. I have to return some video tapes"

"Goodnight."

"Seriously now. I have to piss. I have to piss so bad that if I let it go it'll be like hell's flood in here. I assume you all read your ticket; it said no cameras, but bring an arc in case Maynard pisses"

Then of course the changed up Aenema lyrics. I was laughing my ass off.

I think he really did have to take a piss because he darted off stage when the other members hugged.

Overall the performance was nothing less than stellar. Thanks Tool!

Next time let's hear some Undertow/Aenima songs that we haven't heard in a while. (Undertow, 4 degrees, Flood, Eulogy, Jimmy, Pushit, Third Eye, or H. would be great)

First off, let me just say that this was my 4th TOOL show and was not disappointed at all!! We, being my wife, bro and stepson, got to the venue about 6 and waited outside for a bit, just chilling.

Got in, got our merch (got the ISIS octopus shirt which totally kicks ass), grabbed some pizzas and off to the seats. I don't know how many of you were on my side, but the guy that kept yelling was drunk off his ass before we even got in the venue! Good times!! That dude ended up by us in 112 and would start the pre-show yelling to get the crowd going, got to admit, it worked! As soon as ISIS took the stage, the place erupted and I'm sure the boys in the band were pretty stoked about it. They don't talk on stage hardly, do they? And why should they, just let the music do the talking, right? Totally blown away!! I think their new cd is going to do really well from being on this tour. Although, there were a lot of meatheads in the crowd too. Some jock types and just general posers were all around too. I guess you gotta expect it at these big ass arena shows. At one point during TOOL a lot of people were sitting down around us! WTF? I don't get why people pay good money to come to a concert and then just sit the fuck down. Baffles the mind. On to the setlist.

Stinkfist sounded really strong and I liked the maynardism after it: "F.Y.I. I'm still sick, but I'm here, so suck my dick!" Gotta love MJK! The weed smoke in the arena was just all over! I'm not complaining in any way, but I think my stepson had a good buzz going and didn't even know it! Next was The Pot, aptly timed I'd say! The crowd was into it big time, well except the posers who didn't know any words! Next was 46 & 2, if I'm correct in the order of things. I loved the new keyboard intro. It seemed like they were on the experimental side a bit last night, which is always welcome. Next up was Jambi, which totally kills live! I just love the solo from Adam on this one. I love how he got the spotlight for just a moment. I can't remember if it was before schism or not, but they did some halloween sounding droney music as a segue which sounded really evil and cool.
Next up is what I think is the mother lode! Rosetta with the LK intro and the visuals they had on this one were really cool, not really what I expected from reading the newsletter. It seemed like the guy was running down the road but looked like he was in front of a green screen. Still really cool though and all the alien images and the pyramids, really trippy stuff! After they tore through that, I was thinking "come on wings!!!" and sure enough, there it was! I just had this feeling that they would break it out for us since we were the final date of the plagued Tejas run for the boys. I gotta say, I was really moved by watching the boys play this!!! They absolutely killed it! We were very blessed to get this song!! When the boys took their break, you knew that they were loving it!! I know I'm hoarse from yelling so much, especially at this point! Next up was Lateralus and I absolutely love this track. This show was full of highlights and Lateralus is just one of their best songs period! Feel this moment!! After this was Vicarious and I think that some of the visuals were probably from the forthcoming video, but who knows at this point if the video will ever see a release officially. Finally, we have Aenema! I love how MJK changed the lyrics to "got to piss" instead of "learn to swim", gotta love his comedic sense! All in all the show was killer and nothing short of impressive!! I really love the new visuals they put together for this tour. It seems like they revamped a lot from the mini tour. I love how TOOL remain to be a band that can't really be touched by any other band out there. No one does it like TOOL and I'm very fuckin proud to be a TOOL fan! Thanks for the killer show guys!! No La Grange, but fuck it, we got Wings/10,000 days baby!!!!

Yeah, some jackass by us in section 112 threw a beer over us too, dripping on us. Why do fuckheads go to shows? Can't they just stay home and jerk each other off and swallow?

You guys that sat that close to the stage are lucky!! Me being short (5'-7"), I always end up getting the tall fucks in front of me, every show! Oh well, I still had a blast!!!

Very tired today at work while I type this!! :)

ah yes, and concerts with lazers.......concerts with lazers rock. and the whole stage basically being one big screen, that was very cool too. the megatron with the video images was kind of akward from where i was sitting too because if you wanted to watch them, you had to miss TOOL, and vice versa. if you had seats higher up tho i bet it would have been pretty cool.

p.s. a Hawthorne Heights mention on toolshed?!?!!?!? save that crap thats neither her nor there, though i can agree with you on one thing, EMO sux

I was Sec 11 Row A Seat 15 (in front of Maynard's nose), I never heard him say this---and all the stage images could be seen on the screens behind them. I could also see the laser drawings in the stage, but they went worth missing the up close experience of seeing Maynard's antics---he's way cooler and and funnier than I thought (and he had badass jeans). He put his ATF back on at the end and popped his collar like Fonzie.

Now I will say that it sounds like he's chicken picking the beginning of the song, becasue he's definitely playing two notes at once in a chord. He might switch to a pick after the intro of the song. Yeah, listening now. He switches to a pick. The beginning is chicken picked though.

Wings 1&2 we're awesome; it made the long trip and sleeping at airports worth it.
This was such a different show from the one at Houston (which I thought was great, since we got to hear slightly different versions of the songs - Right in two was really great ... so if you attended the houston show, consider yourself lucky).

I don't think they were going to play Right in two, that intro is the one they use for Vicarious in houston as well.

Did you guys notice Maynard, during aenema, was arching his legs and grabbing his crotch like he wanted to go to the bathroom real bad? That was funny... He was also trying to peek under Danny's tech robe and even chased him trying to grab his ass.

Overall, the band played great . Thanks for a wonderful evening. See you in San Antonio (hopefully).

---EDITED for Mods --- :| I'd like to say this show knocked the small Dallas show and the Woodlands show's dick in the dirt. Best performance I've seen or heard yet this year. He finally hit the end of Vicarious as it was on the album. He's usually an octave below. One thing i'd change if i could, as someone else said, instead of 46&2 or Stinkfist, play H or Eulogy or hell anything else. They did finally drop Sober though, so thats a step in the right direction. Now I gotta find some tickets to the SA show whenever they come back around.

Id just like to chime in and say what a unbelievable show this was. This was my 4th time seeing them and the performance was not disappointing. They seemed to play louder and heavier and the way they changed up their songs, even the small changes, was beautliful. I always enjoy the extended Stinkfist, really loved the fast breakdown of Schism when adam walked nearly in front of danny and they were both just straight jamming the intros to some songs was great as well! Even though Maynard did mess up a couple times it didnt make a difference, he owned every one of those songs and he was backed up flawlessly by his band mates. Also I can safely say that Ive never seen an encore with 3 songs, esp with the length of lateralus, vicarious and the unexpected aenima. I was laughing at the ppl that started leaving after lateralus when maynard said "Bye" only to have to rush back in when vicarious started. The new album sounded amazing live and have to thank them for really presenting 10,000 days well, full of emotion. I took a friend of mine who never really listens to TOOL but was eager to go. After each song he would say "goddamn" like he was blown away. Heres to counting down another 5 yrs so that I can see them again. Its fucking worth it.

Glass half empty half full,

no one will ever interpret the songs or the emotions the same way, which actually is probably how this band likes it anyway.

I read an interview yesterday where Maynard was saying that he'd rather people listen to the music as a whole rather than focus on the intended meaning of the recorded lyrics.

Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss, Gotta Piss....

This was an amazing show to say the very least. Missed Isis, but that's okay. Section 117, row N. Everyone in the arena seemed to be having a good time, seems the band was feeding off the energy the crowd was exuding, which many in our section were fucking rabid.
.

He he he....we were sitting right behind you in row O and we were a tad rowdy, at least I was. :) We had a pretty good section.

---------------------

AMAZING SHOW! as Bill would say: "Night and day. NIGHT AND FUCKING DAY!"

This show completely made up for the Houston show, from the security to MJK. I was so happy, I know I was glowing. :) Free parking??!? Where? Damn, we had to pay 10 bucks, but I guess it was no big deal since we are from Austin and know nothing about Dallas. We went in the Houston street entrance. There were all of these people standing in these 2 really long lines for no reason. The lady that worked there kept telling folks that there was no wait in the middle, that all the doors were open and they didn't have to stand in those lines. We walked right up and our line to get in was like 10 people long. The security was so simple: take the stuff out of your pockets, put it in a bucket, walk through the metal detector, pick your stuff up and go. It took us like 3 minutes to get in vs. 40 minutes in Houston. Even the line for beer was less than 5 minutes and they had decent beer.

ISIS wasn't bad. I don't care for the deep growling death metal screams but I did enjoy the music. They remind me of Mogwai, just harder.

TOOL was amazing. Memford was still a little too quiet, or his vocals were turned down, but it was a vast improvement from the other night in Houston. The vibe from the band and the crowd was amazing as well. This was a very good crowd. I usually hate going to Dallas, but I really enjoyed these people. It was such a good show that when the show was over and we were all filing out the door, the crowd kept screaming in merriment. It was a good time.

I was super happy to hear Wings/10,000. It was perfect. I thought that I would cry at some point, but I was just too happy. Jambi was fucking great as was R.S., 46&2 and Aenema. But once again, Lateralus was the highlight of the show for me. They really have it down and that song does something to me. It's a religious experience for me. After Lateralus was over, my friends and I all gave each other a group hug. I even leaned over and hugged the guy in front of us in row N. He was so cute and really into the show. Don't know if I freaked him out, but he hugged back pretty tight...he he he.

The "gotta piss gotta piss gotta piss" was funny. He should have run off the stage after Lateralus to go pee. The band could've messed around for a minute or so.

Anyway, great show. I can't wait for them to come back to S.A. now. I do have to hate on Dallas for a second though. Why in the hell would the city have the exit for I35SE CLOSED when an event like that is getting out? It took us like 30 minutes to find a way around to get on the fucking highway. Poor planning. Poor!

Ok, we're off to Houston tonight to see Massive Attack. woo-hoo.

Took me a while to post some thoughts on the concert last night but the evening is still very fresh in my mind! I have been attending "rock shows" since I was 14 years old (many years ago) and hundreds of shows. I continue to attend but it is very difficult to impress me unless everything is perfect....the band, the music, the setlist, the stage performance, and most importantly...the sound has to be cyrstal clear. If just one of the previous criteria are missing then it is a bad, waste of time/money concert.

Well...Tool at AAC last night EXCEEDED every aspect and was probably the best show I have ever seen. I was so excited prior to the concert as I have seen Tool a few times in the past including this year's McFarlin Auditorium gig. This time however my 16 year old son and my wife attended and I so wanted "things" to be perfect since I had been telling them that Tool was awesome live for so long.

This week hits and BAM - my wife gets pneumonia and Maynard gets sick and the Houston show and of course San Antonio's postponement lead me to think BAD thoughts.

Maynard erased those concerns singing the first verse of Stinkfist...my wife immediately pushed her ills aside and everything simply got better and better!!

Our seats were AWESOME thanks to my buddy (The Hostels), the sound was crystal clear and incredible allowing us to fully appreciate the musicianship of Tool. The visuals and stage of course were bigger than life yet no at all overpowering the guys in the band. The setlist was near perfect (add Eulogy or The Grudge) and MAYNARD absolutely was completely "on" and powerful. Kudos to him for his toughness in getting out there being sick and then proceeding to blow us away!

Adam one of the greatest guitarist ever plus easily the most intelligent. Justin one of the greatest bassist ever and powerful presence on stage. Danny....o.k. he is now squeeked by Neil Peart as the best drummer ever...Danny's percussion is unbelievable and perfect at all times. Then Maynard simply has it all! Thank you for the INCREDIBLE night.

And by the way, my wife and son made a special trip to Maynard's Vineyard this summer and suprised me by bringing some wine all the way back to Dallas! How cool is that???? Next glass I have will be a toast to TOOL for everything!

Spiral Out.

Why in the hell would the city have the exit for I35SE CLOSED when an event like that is getting out? It took us like 30 minutes to find a way around to get on the fucking highway. Poor planning. Poor!

Ok, we're off to Houston tonight to see Massive Attack. woo-hoo.

We were in 116...J, on the aisle next t0 117...great view, great sound...great show! mjk was on, and I feel bad for the Houston/Woodlands folks...Now all we need to do is get San Antonio rescheduled, add 'right in two' to the setlist...and honestly...why not a throwback...I'd die to heare Opiate live AGAIN!!!

That show totally rocked my face off! Thank you ThirdEye11 (Chad) for selling me that ticket :)

How completely awesome that was. Can't wait to see em again!

Good to see you here and glad you enjoyed the show!! How was your seat? For me I had to choose between the seat I sold you and mine in 116. I'm wondering now if I shouldn't have chosen yours because I think despite the distance upwards, you may have been closer to the stage. Oh well I really really enjoyed the performance.

I think from where I was the sound was likely better so I'm still probably happy with where I was, glad you enjoyed it as well.

I was on the floor (left section, row U) and I'm wondering what show you guys were at that you said the security guards were cool. They were complete dickheads in the "pit". Having seats on the floor was a very bad idea, I don't understand why they did that. I went to AAC last August for system of a down and mars volta, and they just checked your wrist band before you entered the floor; there were concert pigs EVERYWHERE checking EVERYONE'S tickets constantly last night. It was ridiculous.

But enough of the bitching. This show was INCREDIBLE.

Wings/10,000 Days was amazing. I couldn't believe they played it.

Lateralus was badass as well.

But I was one of the guys that rushed the stage during Aenima, and that seriously made my fucking night. I have no voice left, and I don't care. It was so awesome being so close to the band like that.

I was the redheaded guy in the hat like ten feet from Adam if anyone remembers.

When they were tossing shit out into the audience, Danny gave Adam one of the drum heads, and Adam told the security guard to give it to this little kid that was at the front. I thought that was really cool.

And then Adam held out his guitar like he was going to toss it and some drunk guy was like "GIVE IT TO ME, OMG TOSS IT HERE ADAM".

"Gotta piss, gotta piss, gotta piss..."

Maynard is so fucking funny. His sense of humor is dry but hilarious.

All in all, this show was amazing. This was my second show (saw them july 23 2002 at ft worth convention center) and definitely the better experience, I think.

last night was deff the best experience of my LIFE.
i had 2nd balcony seats at first so i was really worried i wouldnt have a good view but we ended up buying better seats the day-of and giving our other ones to some friends.. section 105 about half way up- right in the middle- amazing view of the stage, the light show, and maynard and adam's faces.
also was really worried about him being sick effecting the quality of our show but it didnt at ALL! he did absolutely amazing.
"got to piss" made me almost die laughing

did anyone else notice that when people had their lighters out they werent JUST using them to show some love? ;-) my roomie being one of them

concidering buying day-of tickets for san antonio show if they are available- any word on when the new date will be?

I actually had 3 tickets to the show. 2 in the lower level 104 (to the side of the stage behind Justin) and the 1 in 210. I sat in 210 for almost the entire show, but before the encore I decided to check out the lower seat. I took a dude I met down there with me and rocked out in 104. Both sections were great - the platinum level was great because there was no line for alcoholic beverages :) The lower level was great also because I could really see the band members more clearly.

Anyway, I loved both seats, the show, the music, everything. This concert was the 2nd best I've ever seen! Only a few Phish shows top it to me.

I haven't seen anybody mention this Maynardism (and I personally didn't hear it) did anybody else?

"To the guys up front: sorry," (in reference to the lasers and stage floor projections)

I saw this in a Dallas Morning News article online:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-tool_0915gl.ART.State.Edition2.3f4dc8b.html

The guy that wrote this review obviously doesn't know anything about music.

I have seen Tool close to a dozen times. I took my Fiancee to her first Tool show last night and she has a new found love for Tool. After the show she admitted she liked them a little before the show but they are now one of her favorite bands. Might I add that I'm trying to wing her away from Country.

It was an alright show, I guess.

I was too stoned to remember ISIS, so I don't know about them.

As for Tool:
I didn't realize how bad the set list truly was until I heard it live. There were no epic songs (other than WFM/XKD). It was all singles-and rather boring ones at that. The Lateralus songs were absolutely beautiful, but when they played the 10,000 Days songs, I found myself becoming terribly bored-to the point that I actually sat down during Jambi.

As for Maynard:
Horrible. It seems as if Maynard has read so many reviews bashing on how he used to perform that he has forced himself to normalize, if you will. He wore jeans, no shirt, and a cowboy hat. He remained standing the entire time (not just standing-but that arrogant rock star stance). If I wanted to see a standard rock star, I would have caught the Godsmack/Rob Zombie concert a few weeks ago. When I see Maynard, I want to see him in his underwear, cross-dressed, painted, or curled into a ball letting lose. I want to feel what he's singing. Last night I didn't.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good show and all; sounded good, looked decent, I guess. It just wasn't... Tool.

But if look at the length of allbum, the laser light show etc, it would seem that the intension was to have a straight rock concert.

The only big mystery to me about the set list is this:

They didn't play The Grudge, a song about the return of Saturn, which supposedly returns to smae position about every 30 years (or roughly 10,000 Days). I gues the overall theme in each song is just too much different

My friends and I were row B seats 123 section 116. It was great. I really don't know how to describe it. It was just amazing.

I have about 50 cell phone pictures, and 2 or 3 videos. They suck incredibly, but they're better than nothing. One of my videos has the clear beginning of Wings. Wings/10,000 Days was absolutely amazing. I was also glad to hear 46 & 2 because that's the song I first heard by them.

I don't think TOOL was going for that kind of Effect. I've seen all their Tours and it was obvious to me ,and others, that this Tour is about each persons interpritations. I think they, HE, was trying to stay out of the way. We've seen that trick up'ed stage performance before. This was different intentionally. Just my .02

This was my first Tool concert ever and I said before I got to the show that I was looking forward to a spectacle, and a spectacle I got. The setlist was stellar, the music was of course badass, and the performance as a whole rocked. The lasers were ok, they could use some different patterns, I found them boring after the first six times. The stage was badass and added to the show alot. It is true if you get floor seats you cant see the stage worth sh*t. A couple of friends made that fatal mistake. I was in 108 Row G and had an excellent view of the stage and the band.

There is nothing to complain about. We got a super long performance, badass songs and a life long memory. I am just glad that I got to see them this time around.

Oh yeah and to the guy named Mel who sat next to me and chiefed for awhile, whats up buddy.

You know, I'm tired of THIS shit. I go to a TOOL concert to see Tool... Not fucking theatrical rock. I don't want to see Maynard acting like he is ridding a horse, that's not funny or interesting.

I want to see Tool. I DON'T want to see Kiss. If YOU want to see Kiss, fine, but if you also want to trash me for speaking up, you can shove it up your ass. Tool is not an amazing band because they put on great fireworks at their show; they are a great band because of their music. In previous tours it was all about the music, nothing more. This tour, obviously, is not.

And to whoever said this tour is about interpretation:
I thought the other tours were MUCH more open to interpretation than whatever this tour is.

That sounds like a theatrical rock performance to me. I like that they looked liked some "normal" dudes THIS year. I enjoyed the changed; For however long it might last? They seem to always surprise me when they come to town. I'll be on this roller coaster for ever... unless they turn into Metallica!!

I'm not trying to trash anyones opinion, Just trying to make sence of what they did this year. The music sounded great as always, and I think they can do no wrong so far. TO EACH HIS OWN !!

You wouldn't call doing a concert in bras and panty hose with a painted white face theatrical? And you know what? If you don't want to see Maynard do his dances, don't look at them. I think they're hilarious, entertaining, and add to the concert experience. If you're just there for the music, how about you close your eyes, while the rest of us laugh our asses off?

When a band's singer dresses in something out of the norm, that does not mean it's theatrical, but nice try. I see you found that little cowboy dance hilarious. I'm glad Maynard has knocked his humor down a few notches so that the common mind can now find the concerts funny.

Sorry for not posting this sooner, as I've been out of town and away from many computers since the concert.

It's great that there is so much of a positive response to this show on here, because wow it was a great concert. Not everyone is going to like every show, of course, but I just wish we could keep the negativity to a minimum and lets not egg on the people who just seem to acting negative so they can get under people's skin.

That aside, this was my fourth Tool show, and the energy was incredible. I was immediately reminded why I love this band. Much better than BOTH shows they had previously in the metroplex, this definitely had the momentum of an Aenima-era show but with the mood and aura the band has made for themselves in these present times. Before the lasers showed up, though, I thought this show was lacking a bit visually, especially when compared to the awesome Alex-grey-inspired artwork and giant backdrops they had during the last tour. The lasers really gave the show an incredibly retro vibe and seem to solidify this band's place as this generation's Pink Floyd, at least in terms of visual spectacle.

The crowd was great and very responsive. And they had good reason to be -- from the moment Maynard introduced Stinkfist by saying "shazbot," I knew this concert was going to hit all the right notes.

And it did. And so did Maynard. He told us he was sick, but I couldn't tell. He started off a little bit stationary, but as the show moved on, he really started getting more into the show, just as others have mentioned. I was ecstatic that we got to hear the Wings duo. It was definitely the highlight for me -- other than the otherworldly (no pun intended) rendition of Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned, which reaffirmed it as my undisputed favorite tune on 10KDays. The visuals to accompany the excellent performance of the Judith Marie tribute were great. I think we got the best of it on the balcony though, expecially those of us in the balcony directly in front of the stage.

The instrumentalists, especially Adam, believe it or not, were spotless. Each of the other shows I've been to, Adam has hit something or other sour. But this time, wow, it was flawless, other than a slight sound malfunction in Jambi right before the outro that I don't think was his fault (EDIT: the apparent sound malfunction was actually on Vicarious, right after the first chours... funny how your memory plays tricks on you). Danny isn't human, I'm sure of it, and Justin's incredible talents were marred by what seemed a lacking bottom end, which was a shame because it seemed, from what I COULD hear clearly, that he was really having an "on" night.

And on that note, the only drawback to the show seemed to be the sound. Not of the band's fault, it seemed to just be a symptom of the arena. Way too big for a band with as intricate a sound as Tool's, a lot of the nuances were lost. Would be perfect for something like Motley Crue, but when each little note of feedback and every last tom hit matters, well, sometimes a huge, cavernous buidling just isn't the right fit.

All in all, an excellent Tool show where it just seemed like the guys were enjoying themselves and were definitely feeding off the overwhelmingly positive crowd's energy.

I hope they swing back on a second leg cause I'd definitely be seeing them again, and hopefully they'll play Right in Two and a few more of their classics.

I'd better stop writing now, 'cause I've...

I am very happy to hear all the great reviews of the show. Seems like I am the only person that didnt have the time of there life. Unfortunately I have to say I am dissapointed with my experience but by no fault of Tool. Although I am a long time Tool fan this was my first concert. I have been looking forward to this tour and promised myself that I would see them this time around. I bought 4 tickets to Dallas since it was the closest venue(8 hour drive). I had been getting myself ready for the show for months and did my best to make my first Tool show perfect. I bought a hotel room just 3 blocks from the AAC and invited 3 of my friends to come along. I even whipped up a batch of kind bud brownies =). We arrived at the hotel with enough time to do a little pre game and headed to AAC at about 6:30. Everyone was really excited and even more so when we got to our seats (sec. 10 row L seats 1-4). We were very close and had a nice unobstructed view of the stage. The mood was great and the stadium began to fill. Isis really did a good job of getting the energy going. I was a bit disappointed to see so many people walk around while they were playing. I mean they arent my favorite band either but to walk around during a performance is rude no matter how you look at it. Anyway, I was ecstatic when Tool took the stage and began playing Stinkfist, and thats when the first asshole showed up. This guy walked right up to my seat and stood up in it. I looked up at him and told him to get down. He asked if I was planning on sitting in it and I said of course not. He couldn't understand why I didnt want someone I didnt know rocking out 2 inches from my back in my chair that I payed 60 dollars for. I finally got him out of my seat after arguing for at least 10 minutes. In the midst of arguing with asshole number 1 another asshole stood up in the chairs right in front of mine. I couldnt see at all. I asked him to sit down and he began arguing with me as well. This went on for a while. He tried to convince me to stand in my chair and I wouldnt because I have more respect for the people around me then that. When I finally got him to step down he just turned and argued with me more and eventually stood back up in the chair facing me singing the wrong lyrics and dancing like an idiot. All the while asshole one is still trying to take my seat again. I totally lost it at this point and grabbed a security guard and asked him to remove the assholes. They didnt even have armbands to be on the floor in the first place. By the time the assholes were removed it was the end of 10k days and I was so angry I couldnt think straight. These meatheads robbed me of more than half of the show I had so long awaited. 'You thieving bastards. You have turned my blood cold and bitter, beat my compassion black and blue'. These idiots had no sense of reason, no reverence for the experience we were allowed to be a part of, and absolutely no respect for personal space. I was cooled off some by the time Tool took the stage again and was able to really enjoy Lateralus. Its was amazing. The stage, the band, the lights,(the gong!). Everything I had done up until that point, all the planning, driving, even dealing with assholes, all of it was worth seeing that one song. Vicarious was great as well and Aenima was going good until the people rushed the stage. I can halfway understand running to the stage on the last song but I didnt really enjoy the chairs getting shoved into the back of my legs. The 2 and a half songs I got to enjoy were everything I had hoped for. Im just disappointed that these people would ruin the rest of a beautiful experience for me. Oh I forgot to mention the pedafile that walked up and rubbed my arm and tried to talk to me. This 50 something pedafile mustache wearing asshole asked who was playing tonight. He didnt even know who Tool was. I just shoved him into the isle and told him to stay away. I swear at any moment I knew someone was gonna walk up to me and tell me I had been Punk'd or something but they never showed. I guess it could have been that damn trickster god who planned this on me after he buried some dinosaur fossils. Idk, but I will stay as positive as I can and just remember that I will always have Lateralus.

Oh and if you assholes are out there... I hope you choke on this.

Wow that's really terrible. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. at least San Antonio is not where you had your tickets, you would have driven to Dallas for nothing. Where did you drive in from?

I am very happy to hear all the great reviews of the show. Seems like I am the only person that didnt have the time of there life. Unfortunately I have to say I am dissapointed with my experience but by no fault of Tool.

Oh and if you assholes are out there... I hope you choke on this.

Wow... terribly sorry that you had such a bad experience. I've dealt with assholes before at concerts, luckily none at Tool shows. Glad you are trying to stay positive. Honestly, the encore alone was worth the price of admission for me, though. They absolutely ripped through all three songs. The biggest injustice is that you didn't get to enjoy the Wings duo. Something tells me that in the future that's going to be about as elusive as Third Eye or Pushit.

Just for that, I'm with you with on the final remark you made. Maybe people like that don't deserve to die, exactly, but they certainly don't deserve to see Tool shows and at least deserve a good near-death experience.

All I can say is try again. Something tells me there will be a second leg when they get back from Europe again.

My friend and I drove down from Hattiesburg as well. It was the closest show and I didn't feel like waiting for them to get back from Europe.

It was my second favorite Tool show out of them all (My favorite was the Biloxi, MS show). The seats were good, section 111 row P seat 16, great view of the whole stage, projections and lasers. I really enjoyed Rosetta Stoned a lot. Wings for Marie just had my complete attention and I got lost into it. The little twist in Schism was badass. When somone told me they speed up the song I thought it was going to be the whole entire song. Can't wait for the DVD to come out, now that it will most likely have much more live footage.

I drove 6 hours to Dallas from Southeast Arkansas with two friends to see this concert. It was well worth it! I've seen several rock concerts in my time and this has got to be rate as one of the best I've ever had the chance to experience. Highlights for me were definitely WFM/10k & Lateralus. If they happen to play Alltel Arena In Little Rock later next year I'll be the first in line for tickets. Rock on.

Didn't Adam's main guitar tech (the pudgy guy with the gut and the kinda long hair) look like Blair? I don't know, it could have been.

That's not Blair... but I guess their overall appearance is somewhat similar. Still... not him though.

Section 107, Row B, Seats 3 and 4 (AMAZING VIEW)

Late to post, but I wanted adequate time to reflect on Thursday night's show. I'm a noob to the forums, but not to Tool. Albeit this was only my second show, (first was Lateralus - Dallas, 2001); I have been enjoying their talents since Undertow. It was however, my wife's first TOOL show, and she was awestruck. She turned to me on several occasions during the show and told we how incredible they were. I thought to myself, "I told ya!" You see, there is a little animosity with her regarding TOOL concerts. We were both going to go in 2001, but I renegged at the last minute and she ended up going out of town the week of the show. I bought a floor ticket the day of, and went by myself. She will never let me live that one down. Yep. Pissed!

Here's some ramblings...

ISIS:
Who are these guys? They were great. I really enjoyed their performance. Sound was muddy though. The low drones on the keys when coupled with the bass drowned out the vox, and treble was nowhere to be heard. It was obvious the drummer's kit was not miced well. The cymbal overheads, hi-hat and snare were barely audible. Despite these shortcomings, I found myself wanting more from these guys. Their 30 minute set was too short in my opinion.

TOOL:
Upon entering the arena, I was pleased to see that Danny's kit was not placed too far right of stage. I was concerned that I wouldn't get full view of his power and articulation. Wrong. The kit was perched nicely off center stage. I was transfixed.

During Forty-six and Two I was drumming the entire song on my hips to the amusement of those standing around me. At times I looked back and they were staring at me. Hey, I'm a drummer and I can't help it. (Nothing like practicing your TOOL chops while at the show.) I had worked myself into a writhing trance, when this blasted chick climbs over the seat into our row and trips and falls over into the row below, breaking my rhythm. As I snapped out of it to figure out what the fuck, I noticed that the cannabis had given me cottenmouth and dried my lips to my gums. Nice. I can only imagine my grimmaces as I hammered out the song looking like a undulating harelip.

During Rosetta Stoned, the same chick was back. Same thing, I'm feeling every sound exude it's energy through me, and here she comes climbing over seats. This time she lights in our row right in front of my wife and starts shushing everybody saying, "Everyone just be quiet, just be quiet..." On and on she went, Captain Obvious on the Ecstacy. My wife offers her a drink of ice water, to which she thankfully took. [This was fucking classic...] As the wasted chick begins to drink, my wife tips the cup and douses her with ice water. She then told her to go sit down, chill out and enjoy the music. X-chick then complied like a scolded child and went away.

This show was on par with the best of the best live performances I have ever seen; regardless of MJK's lingering illness. There is little to say about the performance that hasn't been said. My only criticism is the setlist. I would have loved to here Disposition, Right in Two, Eulogy, Undertow, Pushit, or Third Eye. But hey, we got Wings/10K Days. Can't complain too much.

Finally, I have to say that the Dallas crowd seemed very appreciative of the performance, and I think the band acknowledged it. Thanks for the experience guys.

Allllllrighty then....Picture THIS if you will...

Just a few corrections and some not yet mentioned. I was Sec 11. Row A. Seat 12.

-Nobody mentioned Maynard doing the "I come in peace" hand sign when he first came out. He said "Shazbot!" \\\///

-What he said directly before The Pot was "F. - Y. - I.....I'm still sick....BUT I FEEL FUCKING GREAT!" I'm guessing this had to do with the emphasis on SUDAFED during Rosetta Stoned.

-Yes Maynard grabbed Justin's ass...and by the look on Justin's face...he liked it.

-During Rosetta Stoned, Maynard was supposed to have a stool because his manager didn't want him bending over...especially when he's sick. So he stuck out his water bottle as if to say "I wish I had a stool...if I did...I'd put it right *drops* here!" It was fucking hilarious. It also paid homage to the theme of the song...failing.

-Just a fun fact...when they brought out Justin's stool, I knew it was for WFM/XKDs and I shat myself.

-Justin didn't chug his ale (which I have yet to discover the brand of) just a sip. He used the impact from his subs bounce the bottle off of his highest string to provide a very cool feedback.

-It astounds me that nobody has yet mentioned the front rows buckling in. Luckily it was on either side of me...

AMAZING FUCKING CONCERT!!! GET WELL SOON MAYNARD!!!

It was funny to watch him repeatedly hold his water out at arms length and then drop it, but from what I've heard and seen at other shows, Maynard has been intentionally acting weird during R.S. at every show... just acting out in different ways. Where are you getting this stool thing from?

The security guard who stood in front of me is actually a friend. We met at the McFarlin concert. He said that Maynard's manager requested the stool so not to bend over putting more stress on his diaphragm but the stage manager over-ruled his decision so that the floor visuals on Maynard's platform were completely visible. I listened to the whole conversation on the his radio. Pretty Hilarious though!

Hey, I sat next to you or your daughter, I over heard her talking about that Danny Carey story. And i remember that obnoxious guy above us. I believe you asked one of us if we were "Doug". Anyways its a small world, Peace!

That sucks about the Madison show.

Someone commented on the lack of visuals before the frickin' laser beams. Before Isis took the stage, they had a cloth/canvas backdrop. But the stage crew took it down very early...6:30 or 7. The additional seats released to Ticketmaster a day or so before the show were all behind the stage. They took the backdrop down so that the people behind the stage could see.

I think that's also whey there was seemingly very little in the way of visuals. The screen that is normally behind the stage (see photos in Houston, TX show review) was not at full-height. So the people behind the stage could see. I think the overhead screen images were projected on the screen behind the band as well; it's just that no one could see them. I have to think that it would've been more impressive visually to have had that.

May be stating the obvious to some, but just clarifying for those who may not know.

The Houston and Dallas shows had nothing different onstage as far as visuals go, except in Dallas they didn't have a black curtain hanging behind the stage. The curtain seems to help those white light bulbs stand out a little more, and helps hide the strings that the bulbs are hanging on. Those vertical video screens behind the band have been the same height for the whole tour, no matter where they've played.

The only other difference would be the arena's scoreboard video screens that they were able to use in Dallas. The Houston venue doesn't have those.

I haven't been able to get around to posting a real review yet, but I just wanted to add, while I was thinking about it...

One more lyric that Maynard changed during AEnema... "Don't just call me pessimist..." became, "Don't just call me "has-to-piss"..."

That's the funniest one, imo.

Well, part of my review would be...

... it's REALLY hard to pay attention to the details of the show when you've got people climbing all over you and your seat, with both hands holding full beer cups, and then slipping and falling and spilling said beer all over you when the folding chair gives way... or when the couple that was 5 rows behind you decides they're not happy with their seats, so they decide that it would be much better to stand in YOUR seat 2 inches behind you... or when 200 people decide to rush past you in the aisle, bowling over the poor security lady/ticket checker on their way to the front because they're not happy about their seats either... or when a pregnant woman shows up in the row in front of you 5 songs into the show, looking like she's ready to pop, yet she has two cigarettes behind her ears and a beer in her hand...

If you can't tell, I hate seats on the floor. It forces you to stand near people that you just might absolutely hate. I like to get to shows early, get my spot up front, and hold on to it. All the people who want to constantly leave to get beer and go to the bathroom and jump around and socialize and not pay attention to the incredible show in front of them can stand in the back and get in fights and generally act like idiots wherever they choose to... as long as it's away from me. TOOL... get rid of the seats on the floor. K'thanks. (Oh... not to mention it gives the scalpers more opportunity to make money. It's a *little* bit harder to charge someone $300+ for a GA floor ticket as compared to a front row floor ticket.)

*rant over*

Anyway, I guess now's as good a time as any to post some sort of review. Because I was travelling all week/weekend, I didn't have internet access after the Dallas show, so many people have already posted things that I would have said... like:

1) Maynard's comments/ jokes... This had to have been the most talkative I've seen him all year, except for Coachella, perhaps.
2) His dropping the water bottle repeatedly during R.S... Odd and funny. At the Gorge he was walking around the stage seeming to pick up and collect small things... cupping them in his hand. Maybe he just likes to act out in weird, OCD ways during that song. Dunno...
3) his leaving his platform during R.S., circling Justin and admiring his ass before grabbing it, and then returning to his spot... Obviously he was in a good mood and feeling frisky.
4) his grabbing his own crotch during AEnema (if he didn't have to piss, he really was selling the act)...
5) Justin was finger picking on Wings and then switched to an actual pick at some point during the song, I'm not sure when...

But those are all pretty much repeat comments. I guess the only unique thing that I've got to say is this... It really seemed to me that Maynard came out there thinking he had something to prove that night. After what happened earlier in the week, I think he really felt like he HAD to put on a great show in Dallas, despite whatever symptoms he might still have been feeling. I was really skeptical if he even WAS still sick at the time. He sure didn't sound like it. He hit more notes and screams than I would have expected. Hell... he sounded worse at McFarlin in May than he did last week at the AAC.

I saw 7 TOOL shows this year, and they were all good in one way or another, (as was every show I've ever been to), but this one just felt different. I was really moved that night, and I didn't feel that from any of the other shows I saw this year. I was even brought to tear(s) at one point... which hasn't happened at a TOOL show since sometime in '02, I'd guess. It didn't erase my disappointment from earlier in the week, but it definitely made it all worth it. As someone else put it, compared to Houston it was "...night and day. Night and fuckin' day." The rest of the band is always phenominal of course. But there's an energy onstage, contributed to by all four members, and if you pay attention, you can pick up on it. I think they all came together that night, and the energy truly was blazing. Kudos to the guys for that. Now let's just hope we get a makeup San Antonio show, as well as plenty of shows in the southeast US next Spring.

09-19-2006, 07:57 PM
I have been an avid Tool fan since about 1993 and I think this was my 7th show. All seven were amazing compared to any other show I have seen from any other band and they sounded good at this one once again, especially considering the sickness and the fact that the sound wasn't that great - especially for Stinkfist. I thought the stage being the visual effect was a great idea and made for a better visual show than probably any other. I don't care if Maynard dresses up like a girl, a preacher, a cowboy, a sheep, a pony, or a normal guy. I also don't care if the all stand still, do cartwheels, or tap dance throughout the show. The only criticism I have of this show is the same criticism I have of every other Tool show I have seen since the Lataralus album was released....lack of creativity in the setlist and playing the songs themselves. I do like both albums quite a bit so don't get me wrong. I was happy to see that some other "old school" fans pointed out the same disappointment in previous reviews. Don't mis-read or mis-understand me. Everything everyone said about how "they didn't miss a word" or a note or whatever about how they sounded just as good if not better than the album was correct. They ALWAYS play that well and, by the standards set to any other band, that would mean they kick ass live. I am talking about the standards they set for themselves in the late 90s tours when they not only played better than they did on the album, but DIFFERENT than they did on the album. The best show I have ever seen from anyone live was the one here in 98. Almost every song was different from the album or extended in some way or at least a song you were not expecting them to play. I remember them opening with Cold and Ugly (not a single), playing the extended version of Stinkfist with the Elvis verse, playing You Lied (an unexpected cover song that had everyone confused and debating the origins), the bad ass slow version of Push It and long winded intro to Sober (both of which some of you heard many years later on the box set), and wrapping up with the super-kick ass extended version of Jerk-Off followed by that weird Hooker With a Penis outro. Almost every song they played then was out of left field in some way and it was incredibly creative.

They still do a little of this. They played the extended version of Stinkfist (minus the Elvis lyrics) and the people around me who did not know it got really fired up. Unfortunately, I have heard it live for 8 years so it was not exciting to me in the same way. There were some ever-so-slight modifications on some other songs, but they were hardly noticeable.

They played almost all of the new album, which they did on the Lateralus tour as well. They are both good albums and I know the tour is to promote those albums, but I wish they would re-visit some older stuff as well. I understand the avoidance of Opiate material because I don't think they still have their 20-something year old angry outlook on the world as much anymore. I am definately happy they finally took the Sober training wheels off their show and realized they could put that 6 minutes to better use with something we all had not heard at every show. But why not Prison Sex or 4 Degrees which are my two favorites from that album and I have NEVER heard either of them live? From the third album, why not scrap 46&2 and Aenema (even though it makes for a nice sing along) and play H or the slow version of Push It once again? Hell, throw in Hooker With a Penis for kicks - even better sing along.

Why not scrap Schism, which is played at every show and probably most people's least favorite from that album, and play The Grudge or Parabola or The Patient? And finally, Tool played almost every second of the new album except for Right in Two. Raise your hand if you would have liked to have heard the drums on that live - perhaps instead of the silly 20 minute rosetta stoned song?

I also miss the days of the cover song being thrown in. Rather it was No Quarter, You Lied, Comando, Stranglehold, or one of the others, it really gives something for you to run and tell your friends about. That is the complaint I have about the last several Tool shows I have seen. It isn't even a complaint because they always put on a great sounding show. It is just that, like someone mentioned before, you have to have something memorable to say about a concert to make it special. I could ramble on about the details of the show in 98 forever and how original and creative it was. All I can say or remember about this show a week later is...'They sounded just as good as the album and that is basically what they did - play the new album - note for note."

Tool is a better band than that. They got the reputation for being a great live band because they put more into their show than that. They dug down deeper than that. When you tried to sing along with them they would take you off on a tangent and you would not know where they were going. That is the exciting, goose bumps part of the
Tool experience that has been missing the last few times I have seen them. I hope they will go back to that creative, different aproach the next time around. Either way, I will be there...

Good post imo. It reminds me of a post that a good friend of mine made a few weeks ago.

http://toolnavy.com/showpost.php?p=1343521&postcount=407

That post sums up EXACTLY how I feel. I first saw them in 1997, then twice in 1998. Maynard isn't as good a vocalist as he was then, but he could certainly try to be half the performer he was then. More people would leave their shows with a sense of awe and wonderment. I felt GREAT after the Dallas show, but not like I did in 1998. It's like using a drug for the first time and never getting that high again. That's how I felt in 1998 and it has continued to current. Come on Tool, new shows, covers, experimental versions. Give us something new.

I hear what you are saying BUT.....I don't see how anyone could not love the new 10,000 days album and the live performances of Vicarious, The Pot, Rosetta, Right In Two, 10,000 days! I just think Tool is growing and evolving and we should all be totally thankful that they are even on tour period!! Let's not live in the past wishing it was 1998 again....let's show our support for the present Tool so that we get "future" Tool!!!

Obviously you never saw them in 1998, or you would know why so many want to go back there. I experienced the best show of my LIFE hands down, on August 8, 1998. It was the only show (out of 8) that I've seen Tool do a cover. It was the only show where I saw Tool do an experimental version of one of their songs (Pushit) and it was the only show I was TRULY in AWE after leaving. I've seen over 150 bands in concert (probably a lot more but I can guarantee that many) and this was the only single show where I left going "How did they pull it off?"

The current tour is AWESOME.... if what you want to hear is the album versions of the songs, just like the CD, but louder and with the band members playing the music live. There is nothing wrong with that, I'd gladly pay $100 to see that show 2-3 times a year in my city.. More if I could afford to travel.

I can't tell you how much I would pay to see them repeat that performance in 1998. Well worth $300-400 without blinking an eye, and probably worth more.

If Tool promised me a show of 4 hours of music, with covers, experimental versions, a much more full catalogue of their music, or something along those lines, I KNOW for a fact many would pay $150+ to see that show.

I'd easily pay a grand for that ticket. It'd kinda be like going to the superbowl with your hometown team in it, only better. :)

I believe you're thinking of Mantra. I noticed it too.

(This further proves that Mantra is not a cat, or an old lady, or Bill Hix, or whatever, but rather just the band playing around with sound FX)

The four hour show with covers, experimental versions, and unexpected old favorites thrown in for a grand a ticket huh? I would rather pay a grand for that ticket than $100 again for my ticket to last week's shows. Like Thirdeye11 said it, if you don't understand that, then you just were not there. There are some live recordings floating around out there that might capture the moment we are talking about from that time period (as well as a CD can). Buy one if you can find one and you will see what we mean. Then, of course, mail the band a $20 bill so they don't feel robbed.

A week after my second Tool show and my family and I are still talking about our experience. The show was filled with the some of the nicest people and I just wanted to thank everyone in attendance for a wonderful time.
