I'm wondering if anybody else has noticed this, but there's so much alliteration in this song. Normally it's no big deal, but the "s" sound is usually used in poetry to make something sound snaky, evil, vicious. I think that's really acheived in the song. Am I out of my head, or has anyone else seen this too?

(S)ome (s)ay a comet will fall from the (s)ky
followed by meteor (s)howers and tidal waves...

Bull (s)hit, 3 ring (c)ircus (s)ide (s)how

I don't think all those "s" sounds were put there by accident. :)

Heh, I never noticed that. I think it only makes the song flow so much better.

You're right...it really improves the flow. Call me a dork, but it's not my fault...I'm an English teacher. It just shot out at me once. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah it's mainly used for flow... I don't think that it really means anything intentionally.

But I'm gonna go ahead and say...S sounds...maybe running water? Seeing how that is a theme in this song. I dunno, I may be just talking out of my ass.

nah, onomatopeia is words that sound like their action, like bang! or something.

the technique used is called alliteration.

ah right fair nuff, yea, alliteration kind of emphasises the anger felt towards la.

hmm, your reference to s's being 'evil' made me think of something ironic:
in Christianity, the Our Father has a line that goes:
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who tre(s)pa(ss) again(s)t u(s)

And every time I hear the church say it, it reminds me of a big pit of snakes.
(Yes, I go to church. Yes, it's because my parents make me)

Everyone in thissss thread should try to go an entire day without ssssaying the letter "S". It'ssss very dificult. Looking into thisss way too much.

BTW, when your'e referring to "Bull (s)hit, 3 ring (c)ircus (s)ide (s)how", half of those "S" sounds are shhhh, not ssssss. I've never heard a snake go shhhhh, unless he was trying to be real quiet. Maybe he was hunting wabbits.

Whether or not it was intended, it still is alliteration. It just goes to show that Maynard has a firm grip on the English language and its application.
