Ok, to be satanic you must clearly believe in satan. Now in my opinion to believe in satan, you must also believe in the other christian teachings such as jesus being god's son and for the that matter God. Now, to quote Maynard from an interview when asked about christianity, he replied:I love fairytales. Now it would seem that he takes the christian beliefs as mearly stories, so to be satanic with this in mind would be like us worshiping the amazing spiderman as a bonafide deity. Also as a little side note, did anybody else realise that lateralus is the only tool album that does not mention satan on it. Also why does lateralus have an explicit lyric label when according to the official lyrics there is not one cuss word on the whole album?Go figure!

Satanism doesn't equal worshipping satan. Satanism isn't a religion, but a philosophy founded by Anton LaVey. Satanists do not worship satan nor any deity, a satanist is his/her own god.

(I am not a satanist)

Now that really sorta makes me curious how you just mentioned the explicit lyrics on lateralus. In oz, .....well, when I bought my copy, there wasn't a label of that sort, but I bought mine when it first came out, and also there are now new laws in oz about explicit lyrics and now they have enforced an age limit for certain cds., ie 18+ etc. I also bought Opeth's new album damnation today and surprisingly enough it read on the front cover; warning: this recording contains explicit lyrics etc. And even before listening to it, I knew that with a band like opeth, and tool for that matter, because their lyrics don't give to much away and leave room for many vast interpretations, the system must feel vulnerable and obliged to interpret them in their negative ways. The new Opeth album contains absolutely no "swear words" (LIKE LATERALUS), but maybe bands don't have to swear to make people fearful of the implied meanings. I'm just interested in finding out what the authorities find so offensive when very mainstream derogatory words are not used. Anyway......on the satan note......i feel its more to do with hedonism and overindulgence at an unhealthy, unsocialistic price. They just use the mythical character satan as a backdrop for their irrational behaviour.....ie just like the catholic church's downfall and undoing that was supposed to be in the name of god according to the perpetrators

I have always thought of Satanism as being summed up in this quote fairly well. "Do what ye will, forsaking the others." Another way to say that is, Do what makes you happy and fuck everyone else. You come first. Not a bad way to look at things.

I don't think it's odd at all that Lateralus would have an 'Explicit Lyrics' sticker. Afterall, the Matrix got an R rating, and Beavis and Butthead do America got a PG-13.

So Why? Ratings committes are fucked up, that's why. There's a story about how when the Southpark Movie was being made, it got sent in several times and got an NC-17 every time, then, just to piss off the ratings committe, they made the movie as horrible as they could and got an R.

The Matrix could easily have been a PG-13 movie, based on content alone, but R rated movies indicate that the movie is intended for a more mature audience.

In Short: The rating a movie or album gets is more indicative of the expected audience profile than of the actual content of the movie or album itself.
