Attach yourself to me
Together we can breathe
I don’t want to think about what has come to pass
I don’t want to think about what will come of us
I just want to live this moment knowing what I am

Living vicariously through you
We were meant to be (x2)
But not like this

I feed upon your words and blood when you’re gone
I sneak along the floor to see you trying to sanctify
And dispel the realities
Of your own mortality
Such a shame we can’t accept what’s always coming
But I have seen your death my dear
And I cannot believe the shameless things we’ve done
To bring us both this far.

The sun leeches into place
(Leeches) The calcium from your bones and you collapse
Displaced, and fierce, the loneliness of knowing that
Whatever could have been
Could always change
There’s a loneliness to knowing that.

And someday I may resuscitate you
And truly then I’d need to know if I was worthy
To lie beside you, die inside you here.

Fake, or not?

This is my very incomplete (and probably otherwise very incorrect) interpretation after a few listens. Please correct/clarify anything you hear.

EDIT: Changed some lines after reading Navid's, several of his sound more correct.

I own the TV
'Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
And by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
He used a poison (?)

And in his dream
He kissed him goodbye
It's my kind of story
It's no fun until someone dies

Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie

While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die... from a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all needn't choose your own lie

Why can't we just admit?
Why can't we just admit?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
(??) grave (??)
The right of the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so...

Why can't we just admit?

(??) rain fell down
(??) grave and drown

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and warrior
Still have the transmitter(??)
Sink to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie (x4)

(???)
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
But pull your head on out
Your head believes in (??)
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive... so it is, so it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
(??) you and I

Yes, it seems the song has leaked. As with most of you here, I have given it a few listens. To those who are against listening to it before its air-date in a few days - well, I understand where you may be coming from - but I see no problem with what I have done. I would be hearing it in a few days regardless and this wont affect my decision to purchase the album.

Anyway, I haven't deciphered most of the lyrics yet - but I thought that if we gave it a collaborative effort as a collective, we might figure it out pretty fast. So, thus far - this is what I have:

Eye on the T.V.
Coz' tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be
Like ['bout?] a husband
Drowned by the ocean/
Shot by his own son
He [used a?] poison [probably inaccurate, I know]

[Lines missing]
Its my kind of story
Its no fun till someone dies.

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the T.V.
Stare like a zombie
Whi-le the mother
Who holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying
Why, oh why.

Coz' I need to watch things die
from a distance
Vicariously I

[lines missing]

Why can't we just admit it (x2)

sounds good, too busy listening to get the other words

This is what I think it says::

I own the TV
'Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be like
And by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
She used the boys

And in his dream
He kissed him goodbye
Mishappening(?) story
It's all fun until someone dies

Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Thrown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie

While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Pleads to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die... from a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all needn't choose your own lie

Why can't we just end it?
Why can't we just end it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
neither are brave nor bold
The right of the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so...

Why can't we just end it?

blood like rain fall down
drownin the grave and ground

Part vampire

Still have the transmittous
Sink to the death rattle

Your desire to believe in

Can anyone recall anything about poisoned tea in the news over the past few years? It sounds kind of ridiculous, but the other lines in that section seem to vaguely hint at certain stories I suppose (e.g., "killed by the husband" = Scott Peterson?)

Not that the lines have to reference specific current events, of course. Just a thought.

now that i look at the lryics, i wrote a poem very similar to the message of this about how people watch the news and we get desensitized to all the death and suffering we see and it just becomes part of our routine and we're used to it. this is hte part that most reminded me of it....

I've noticed that listening to the song while trying to read the lyrics really detracts from the song. Our typical grammatical structure doesn't fit with the weird structure of the different parts of the song, or how quickly it changes.

Eye on the TV, cuz tradgety thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be
Like
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used to poison his tea"

Kiss them goodbye, cuz I've got story
"It's no fun until someones dies"

Don't look at me like I am a monster
Throw out your one face, out with the other
Stare like a junky into the TV
Stare like a zombie

While a mother holds her child
who watches him die, hands to the sky, crying
"Oh why, oh why"

Cuz I need to watch things die, from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie.

Why can't we just admit?
We wont give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the graves, nor the born, writers distort and distort
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die, from a good, safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so why can't we just end it?

Blood like rain falling down, drowning grave and mound

Part vampire, part warrior
Carnivore and warrior
Still have the transmitter
Sink to the death rattle

Lie.

Credulous at best;
Your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men
But pull your head on out. Your head believes, so please give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is. So it's always been

We all feed on tradgety. It's like blood to a vampire

VICARIOUSLY I

Apparently the TV report at around 5 minutes is actually saying:

"The feeding frenzy of my starving soul
knawing vicariously at the bones,
the exo-skeletal patchwork
protecting my own reflection within.
The twin, insane, engaged in the mirror act of chewing away
at the shell of my attacking self;
the paradox unseen.
Treacherous this deceit,
to make no choice matter,
to have and yet lose yourself,
until finally all reasons why are forgotten.
To live through ones of shadow, mute and blinded, is to really see.
Eclipse the golden mirror and their reflection is set free."

Quite alot of references to Lateralus in there, and with the whole mute and blinded, like censored and desensitised by TV? I can definately see the Meshuggah influence.

Couple things most of us are getting wrong:

First verse:

shot by his own son,
she used a poison in his tea,
then kissed him goodbye

First chorus:

I need to watch things die from a distance
vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
you all need it to enjoy life

Last verse:

credulous, divest your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men

There's some other stuff that's definitely wrong, but I don't have anything better at the moment. Seems like Maynard is trying to tell us we have an obsession with human suffering and tragedy. We live through it vicariously, though he doesn't really say why.

I went to a Tool group I'm a member on on MySpace and the leader had posted pretty accurate lyrics:

Eye on the TV 'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavour it happens to be
Like: killed by the husband, drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son he used to poison

Through this tube, the kills trickle by
This black little story is no fun
Until someone new dies

Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face but with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother
Holds a child, watches him die
Hands to the sky, crying "why oh why?"

Because I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all need it, too - don't lie

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Knee to the grave, noble
Writers just tore his soul (?)
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die
From a good, safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so...

Why can't we just admit it?

Blood, like rain, come down
Drum on, grave and round (?)
Caught in the pothole
You're carnivores and voyeurs
Still, heaven sends me to sing to the death rattle

La la la la la la lie
La la la la la la la lie

(inaudiable murmuring)

Credulous, the bestial desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Put your hand onto your head, please
Believe and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The end of us is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive - so it is
So it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
Isn't it blood to a vampire?
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies

& i also think that instead of "the universe is hostile, so impersonal" it's also as M. Sagro's line that says "the end of us is hostile, so impersonal". which, to me, makes more sense and relates to the whole theme of the song.

In his dream,
He kissed her goodbye.

This part doesn't seem to fit. It's too happy (for lack of a better term). Every other 'headline' is a tragedy of sorts. I am fairly certain that the part that some people are saying is "In his dream" must be a continuation of the poison line. It doesn't make sense as a new thought.

Also, when I listen, I don't hear any 'm' sound at the end of that line. There is a very open ended ee sound. So I don't believe the word is dream.

But Maynard says stuff so weird that I don't really know.

I think we are getting close, either way.

I have a REALLY hard time understanding lyrics in songs--even songs by "normal" bands where the vocals are much more prominent in the mix. With Tool I can usually barely understand anything in their heavy songs. Guess I'm not much of an aural learner.

So, I was just wondering if anybody had typed up what they THINK the lyrics are yet?

Eye on the T.V., cuz tragedy thrills me.
Whatever flavour, it happens to be like.
"Killed by the husband",
"Drowned by the ocean",
"Shot by his own son",
"She used the poison in his tea
and kissed him goodbye".
That's my kinda story.
It's no fun until someone dies.

Don't look at me like I am a monster.
Thrown out your one face,
But with the other.
Stare like a junkie into the T.V..
Stare like a zombie,
While the mother holds her child.
Watches him die.
Pleads to the sky crying:
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die... from a distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing.
Neither the brave nor bold, or writers to storied soul. (?)
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing.

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all feel the same, so...

Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain come down.
Drown on grave and ground.

Part vampire.
Part warrior.
Carnivore and voyeur.
Still have the transmitter.
Sing to the death rattle.

Lie (x4)

Credulous, divest your desire to believe in (?)
Angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out.
Your head believes in give a listen.
Shouldn't have to say it all again.
The universe is hostile,
So impersonal.
Devour to survive, so it is,
So it's always been.

We all feed on tragedy.
It's like blood to a vampire.

Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
Much better you than I.

I think these parts are right:

I own the tv...

She used a poison
In his dream
He kissed her goodbye...

Frown out your one face...

Hands the the sky cryin...

Neither the brave nor bold
Will write us the story so...

Credulous divest
Your desire to believe in...

and whatnot.
That obviously solves those parts as I am right in all things.
No need to thank me.

The "final, squeeky" version looks good to me... but not perfect. The following parts are still up in the air for me:

I own the tv / eye on the TV (either one works, really)

Drownin / drown on grave and ground (makes sense but sounds nothing like either)

Still have the transmitter (transmitter isn't pronounced trans-mitt-ow)

Other than that... nice work.

Transmitter souds more like "Transmittal".

Transmittal - The act or process of transmitting; a transmission.

Also, I really think it is "Sing to the death rattle" - not "Sink". Right after that line, he does the la-la-la's. Like he is singing, to the death rattle.

I realise that its the newest thing to call this guy Maynard. Frankly, I can't say if it is or it isn't - but that fact remains that I am hearing "Credulous" and not "Incredulous". The line "Credulous at best..." makes sense to me in the context of the song.

The only other line I am uncertain of is the Transmitter/Transmittal line which may be interpreted as "Still heaven sends me..."

Aside from that, the lyrics here seem pretty accurate to me - regardless of who posted them.

Most of these transcriptions came straight from the Man's computer. How he writes his lyrics/poetry and then translates that into music is up to him. Think of them as photographs; you don't look exactly the same in every picture, but it is still you.

-Kabir

Since logic has no bearing on anybody....I'll leave you with this.

And no, it was Santa Clause. They're fake. And WHATEVER YOU DO.....do not apply them to Vicarious. They are wrong.

And the easter bunny will at your homes tomorrow.

Do you honestly want us to stop attempting to refine the lyrics we have gathered here until we achieve what we believe to be an accurate collection?
When what is posted on the lyrics page is inaccurate (or deviated from, if you prefer) I attempt to decipher what is actually being sung as opposed to what was posted.
Why would that not hold true in this case?

You have to admit, believe was working with Kabir on the lyrics updates, and Maynard has been known to post lyrics on TDN... It's not entirely out of the question that Maynard came on here and made a post, and if anyone would know, it'd be believe. Just putting it out there.

Does that really bear much relevence to attempting to document what lyrics are actually sung on the single?

I remain confident that its "Credulous" and not "Incredulous". Aside from that, Dry Mana (or Maynard - if you're a "believer") seems to have it pretty accurate.

I can hear "shunned" if I look for it. Not sure which it is. Here's my final opinion:

Eye on the TV cuz tragedy thrills me.
Whatever flavor it happens to be.

Like. . .
Killed by the husband.
Drowned by the ocean.
Shot by his own son. [Shunned by his own son?]
She used a poison in his tea, and kissed him goodbye.
It's my kind of story. No fun 'til someone dies.

Don't look me at like I am a monster.
Frown out your one face, but with the other stare like a junkie into the TV.
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child.
Watches him die. Hands to the sky, crying "Why, oh why?"

Cuz I need to watch things die (from a distance)
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all need it too, don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing.
Neither the brave nor bold will write us the story,
So we won't give pause until the blood is flowing.

I need to watch things die (from a good safe distance)
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain falling down.
Drawing on the grave and bound.[Drowning grave and mound? Drawn by the grave and mound?]

Part vampire.
Part warrior.
Carnivore and voyeur.
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.

Incredulous[/Credulous] at best [is] your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your head, and reason, give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again.

The universe is hostile, so impersonal.
Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been.

We all feed on tragedy (it's like blood to a vampire)

whats wrong with being straightforward? sometimes you want that balance of extremely complex writing and simplicity. sometimes its a million times harder to write simplistically. look at the beatles after rubber soul, some of the greatest lyrics for love songs but unbelievably simple. yet every word strikes a chord.

Maybe this was done so that the people who are TV addicts can understand the song clearly and thus maybe change.. if its too garbled then the meaning could fly over their heads..

incredulous does make sense. the speaker is incredulous at people's desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men, considering how hostile and impersonal the world is, and how hypocritical people are. basically like saying "I find it hard to believe you really believe in angels in the hearts of men, pull your head out your ass, we live for tragedy, admit you do too"

Just because the lines themselves are easy to comprehend doesn't mean that the real meaning of the song is straight-forward. I don't really go in for explicitly figuring out what a song 'means' but I can feel that there are a lot of dimensions to vicarious.

I agree. Credulous might have worked if it weren't for the "at best". "credulous your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men" would mean something like "the world is so tragic so I can understand your desire to believe in this" but the "at best" clearly rules that out.

Credulous means gullible. Incredulous is the opposite. Their desire to believe in "angels in the hearts of men" is because of their gullibility.
The line is a reordered "Your desire to believe... is credulous at best"
It's saying "I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you only believe it because you're gullible, but that's the best I can give you"

Navid

Credulous - to believe something without proper evidence. Ill founded belief. The grammatical structure is varied a little - as is common with poetry and lyrics of songs.

Credulous at best - your desire to believe in...

Even at best, the belief that angels lie in mens hearts is credulous. There is no evidence for it.

Credulous makes sense.

Incredulous makes sense if you take the line in a completely different context. Which you are free to do.

These lyrics are annoyingly straight-forward. Maynard can do this better.

"Maynard can do this better" is a dumb thing to say because there isn't anything inherently worse about having clear, straight-forward lyrics.

Overusing metaphor doesn't reflect intelligence--it's just pretentious. I commend Maynard for the very unobtrusive language he uses to convey his ideas here. Sometimes its just better to say what you want to say.

I disagree.

I think they're better than a whole lot of the lyrics on Lateralus. All the metaphoric and low-concept language is like junk food....it "tastes" good, but the content isn't nearly as powerful as it is when you just say what you want to say. Stuff like "I live while the whole world dies" is a hell of a lot more powerful than "Saturn ascends"....and The Grudge is my favorite Tool song.

No, this is:

Hey

I'm the one who takes you there
Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who cares
They
They betray
I'm your only true friend now
They
They'll betray
I'm forever there

I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel
Sad but true

I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true

You
You're my mask
You're my cover, my shelter
You
You're my mask
You're the one who's blamed
Do
Do my work
Do my dirty work, scapegoat
Do
Do my deeds
For you're the one who's shamed

I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must stea
L I'm your pain when you can't feel
Sad but true

I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true

Hate
I'm your hate
I'm your hate when you want love
Pay
Pay the price
Pay, for nothing's fair

Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who took you there
Hey
I'm your life
And I no longer care

I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel
Sad but true

I'm your truth, telling lies
I'm your reasoned alibis
I'm inside open your eyes
I'm you

On another forum, on March the 23rd, I wrote:All I'm saying is that I might have been a serial killer had it not been my distaste for being pimped. Bruce Willis, me, what's the fucking difference, right?
We use to be barbarians. You know what tamed us? The printing press. Strengthened communication between previously isolated communities. And serial killers. And child molestors. Repulsed and attracted, we're hungry for every gratituous description of their acts.
These people are heroes. They built reason and civillisation just by railing against it. It's because of them that we have a high horse to sit on, moral standards to live by. These one-in-a-thousands are society's release valve of negativity. Child molestors have done more for society than any great politician ever did.
Aren't you grateful?

One of the bests lyrircs maynard has ever done. Why? Because his metaphoric lyrics tend to go anywhere without saying much. Vcarious can grab two themes or more and melt them, opening a whole bunch of other themes and possibilities to think about. For example: I think he is working in to conceptos here: first, the tragedy thirst. Second, the vicarious thing, the "I feel what you feel". And then he's able to hook them up by saying that, because everything is shit, in a way, you are using the empathic concept of "I can feel all what you feel, we're equal" to make a screen over your "thirst" and hide it: you're a vicarious, we're all vicarious. Much better you than I.

P.S. - 4/15 - Anyone know how to write-off mescaline as a legitimate business expense?

isn't it 'head piece', as in a person who just hears music to avoid the happenings going on around them?

And I'm really loving this song more (if that's possible) after getting to know the lyrics. This is some very powerful stuff.

This part:

"Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child.
Watches him die. Hands to the sky, crying "Why, oh why?"

Cuz I need to watch things die (from a distance)
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.

is the most brutal thing I've ever heard maynard sing. I'm reminded of the part in Farenheit 9/11 where the lady is crying to the sky why her son was killed, and maynard directly answering her...I know he's just being cynical and sarcastic, but that's is the harshest thing I've ever heard him sing....

I think it depends on whether the line in question is referring to the people or their beliefs. The people are credulous, as in gullible, for wanting to believe there are angles in the hearts of men. But the speaker could also being expressing incredulity at those beliefs and their ability to maintain them. Since it's not totally clear whch he is referring to, either could work, and ultimately they both express similar thoughts. Having said all that, it does sort of sound more like he says credulous.

Here is what I have...I haven't read all the posts, so hopefully mine is different. Let me know what you guys think :)

Eye on the TV
Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be
Like
Killed by the husband
Drowned by the ocean
Shot by his own son
He used a poison in his tea
Then kissed you goodbye
Its my kind of story
Its no fun till someone dies.

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother
Holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying
Why, oh why?

Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously
I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, Don't Lie.

Why can't we just admit it (x2)

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the graves nor the born
The writers, the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die
from a good safe distance
Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain falling down
Drown the grave and ground.

Part Vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore
And
Warrior
Still have the transmitter
Sink to the death rattle

La,La,La,La,La,La,La-Lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out
Your head please and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is
So it's always been.

We all feed
On tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I
Live while the world dies
Much better you than I.

Obviously, Maynard wasn't blunt enough. The majority of you people don't even understand what the song is about, and yet you criticize it.

This whole song is a mockery of hyperreality, specifically the one found in America. Maybe you just don't like the fact that this song lampoons people like yourselves. You sit here in front of the computer screen for hours on end and don't experience what life has to offer.

Maynard chose television because it is the largest promoter of hyperreality, but it goes beyond that. For example, Gatorade comes in a flavor called "Cascade Crash." No such flavor exists! Wake up people! (Hence the 'alarm clock' sound)
If the lyrics seem cliche, it is only because they are a satire of the cliches present in popular culture.

Tool's previous albums (especially Lateralus) dealt mostly with spiritual and esoteric topics, going beyond reality. How can you go past the real world when you don't even live in it? You need to break out of this hyperreality before you can break out of the actual reality.

I have two remaining uncertainties:

"Blood like rain falling down.
Drawing on the grave and bound."

I am not sure whether this line should be "Drowning the grave and mound" or some variant. Anyone have any opinions on alternative lyrics - or perhaps the meaning behind the current ones?

"Credulous at best is your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men.
Pull your head on out your head, and reason, give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again."

Pull your head on out your head (piece?), reason, give a...

I'm reading a lot of people commenting (here and on other threads) that the lyrics are too straight forward, that fred durst could have come up with this, and other such opinions. I for one do not share that opinion. One could comment on the lyrical content of the song for quite some length but i thought that i might pick a particular instance to comment with the hope that those making the myopic comments refrenced above might wake up to the potential depth in this song.

Lets look at the line (fairly undisputed at this point) "vicariously I live while the whole world dies"

there is an interesting paradox here and that paradox points to the importance of the "vicariously" and hence the song title.

Is the person vicariously living really living? Is the world they see realy dying? really living would be dealing with those experiences which come with being in the world (refrence 46&2 ) but the person in front of the tv is not really in the word and is not really experienceing anything. They are about as close to dead as one could get. Meanwhile the mother who watches her child die or even the person dying are really living (the albiet harsh realities of being) in the world. they are closer to living than the TV junkie. the song presents one thing but reveals something else upon analysis. there is much to ponder here.

you see ...there is depth here...you gotta dig though. You might prefer a song that you can't understand but could easily say "wow...that sounds deep" but what is that worth?

Eye on the TV cuz tradgedy thrills me,

Killed by the husband, drowned by the ocean,
Shunned by his own son he use to poison.

In his dream,
He kissed goodbye.
That's my kinda story.

Don't look at me like I am a monster.
Thrown out your one face,
But with the other.

Watches him die.
Pleads to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die... from a distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.
You all needn't choose your own lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.
Neither the brave nor bold were writing the stories so,
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'.

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies.

Well, here's my beef:

Is Maynard slapping us on the wrist?
Or is he saying that it's just the way of humanity to feed on it?

He's definately not critisizing/talking down to us because he includes himself as part of the "problem." I love that. It's like "This is the way we all are, but don't look down on me just because I'm willing to admit it"

In the "devour to survive" part he justifies it by stating it's just the way nature works, animals eat other animals, things exploit other things. As much as we'd like everything to be pretty, it's just not the way things are meant to be
Reminds me of Disgustipated every time I think about it

I find it interesting he talks as if it's a problem in the beginning but justifies it at the end. I'm having a hard time trying to decide what his ultimate message is here...

I think some of the problems we're experincing aren't down to the mix, moreso we don't actually know the song, or what Maynard is singing. The first time I heard the song the only two words I could pick out where Die and Vicarious.l However now that I've read interprettions of the lyrics, it seems as though Maynards vocals creep forward in the mix, and you're able to follow them a little more.

I feel as though this is what makes Tool's song's a little longer to appreciate. You need to get used to the vocals and in a way, mentally learn the lyrics, so you know what to expect and eventually Maynard starts to carry you through the song.

Just my opinion.

Regarding this section, could he be singing "She used a/the boy's..." rather than "she used a/the poison..."? I'm not sure what the rest of the line would be, if indeed it starts as "She used a/the boy's...," but it seems like it could make sense, given the previous line, and it sounds as possible as the first syllable to "poison." Whatever the case, I'll leave that determination to someone who can pull out the vocals better than I can with my media players.

i've said it before, first listen i felt somewhat like the rest....scared that i couldnt understand the vocalist...

but soon i started to listen, well after the first 5 times. i quickly realized that the vocals are mixed to a perfect level and are accessible IF you are willing to accept them. i can now HEAR the vocals clearly. as much as the rest of the instruments.

Yeap I totally agree. If you listen to Lateralus, the vocals are somewhat downmixed there, I think it's the case that you're given the choice, if you want to hear the vocals you can search for them and they'll be there to liten too, however if you want the music to wash over you just as an experince, it works too.
