The song is sung by two different voices. The first being a gruff and low voice, the seond being a softer slighty higher voice. Both of these voices are from the same person, have both been through the same event, but explain it much differently.
The first voice is how you might tell this story to friends or the media when they come to get an interview.
"Alrighty, then ... picture this if you will.

Began at 2 AM, and
[actually eating up / after eating an entire]
box of Krispy Kremes,
at my need-to-know post
just outside Area 51 contemplating
"[the whole "chosen people" thing / the multitudes of people, thinking]" (http://toolshed.down.net/lyrics/10kdayslyrics.php)

The first line is like an introduction to any story. The next 3 lines create the setting for whoever is listening to the sort.

"

"when a flaming, stealth banana split the sky, like, wide open.
I never expected to see it in a place like this.
I do believe I spilled a
[diamond sundae / diet soda]
or something
right on my Birkenstocks.
[Then he yelled at me / Then yelping / ??]

Holy fucking shit!"

These lines explain what happened to him and how he saw it and his reaction, which as most would be is surprised and scared at the same time.

"Then the X-Files beings,
[who were in some kind of blue-green jet ship
/ who was like some kind of blue-green jackie chan]
with Isabella Rossellini lips with breath that reeked,
did a wicked jump there
also while making the sound a-banana-da-banana
that's when I opened up my bug-eyes,
my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty [lower and / L. Ron Hubbard] upper lip,
and all I could think was,
"I hope Uncle [Martin / Quark] here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants.""

He now realises that he has been abducted by aliens (the X-files reference) and goes onto to describe he was so terrified he pissed himself.

"And after calming me down
with some orange slices
and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope to those who choose to hear it
and a warning to those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me, and I didn't graduate from fuckin' high school."

He starts to communicate with the alien. He believes that he is meant to deliver a message to earth which is pretty easy to see from the lyrics. He seems almost giddy because he didnt finish high school, and we all know in high school they tell us if we don't finish we will never amount to anything, and now he is entrusted to deliever a message to the people of earth.

Now the second voice is still part of the same person, but this voice is his inner mind attempting to deal with what has just happend to him.

"You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said!
See [them / they're] telling children
And this wasn't all in my head.
See, they took me by the hand
And invited me right in.
Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin."

In the first five lines he is attempting to convince himself that this has really happened. The next three lines are his recolection of the events as how he saw them, trying to sort out all that he has seen.

"Strapped down on my bed
Feet cold, eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Can't remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed"

He has now worken up and realised that he is now home, barely lucid, trying to remember what they told him, and he relises he shit his bed.

"Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the One
Born to bear and read you all the details of our ending,
To write it down for all the world to see."

He begins thinking about what they told him and the responsibility on his shoulders, and his shoulders alone. As he sorts out his thoughts he realises that he knows the message is about the appocalypse (the ending) and he must inform the world of it.

"Strapped down on my bed
Feet cold and eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Sunkist and Sudafed
Gyroscopes and [Nicorette / infrared]
Won't help, brain dead
Can't remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed"

His mind is spinning (gyroscopes) not knowing what has happened to him, or even if he is alie anymore. He can't remember what the message was and he didn't mark it down so he could remember it later.

"I can't remember what they said to me
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be a hero
Can't remember what [they / he / it] said
[Oh / God] help me!
Can't remember what [they / he / it] said

Don't know, won't know (x12)

God damn, shit the bed!"

Now he is beginning to beat himself for not remembering what they said, and he knows this would have made him famous and a hero. He is now feeling so lost, and at the end just gets pissed at something else to help take his mind off his anger.

I know its a bit long, but any feedback would be appreciated!

I think your interpretation deals with the issue I was having with some people wanting to ascribe a 'good' or 'bad' connotation to it.

I think there are several hints that it also involved being on drugs...heh.

Ok here comes a few more things.

"So alive in this way
Like an apparition,
He had me crying out,
"Fuck me
It's gotta be
Deadhead
Chemistry
The bottom got on top of me
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"

In this part the voice is trying to rationalize with himself that what he is seeing is because of the drugs he uses. The Deadhead Chemistry seems to be to be a reference to the Grateful Dead rodies, and how some of them were know for quite a lot of drug use, same for the Grateful Dead. The bottom got on top of me is showing how he feels like his whole world has been flipped upside down.

"You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better listen."

At this point he has just been told that he is to deliver an important message. He is mentally pysching himself up so he can make sure that he hears the whole thing, and hears it right, It could be because he was trying to concentrate so hard to not miss it that he actually did because he was too busy thiking. This could lead to a theme of how we all think too much.

"Then he looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
This is [surreal / so real]
Like the time they floated away
See, my heart is pounding
'Cause this shit never happens to me"

As he is being told the message by the other being, the other being is gazing deep into his eyes as to tell him to make sure he remembers this message. He gets the message and worries alot about remembering it, and to write it down. He becomes very excited because he is feeling something he never has before " 'Cause this shit never happens to me' "

"It was so real,
Like I woke up in Wonderland.
Also a bit terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
When I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
[It was a repeat experience / ??]
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real
Finally, it's my lucky day
See, my heart is racing
'Cause this shit never happens to me"

He finally wakes up, away from where all this has happened, and he wakes up with a great feeling inside "Like I woke up in Wonderland". This feeling could be from knowing he has a great purpose now. He wants to be able to share this story with others. He has entered an emotional high from all the excited and hopefulness "Will I ever be coming down?" "Finally, it's my lucky day". And again we get the fact that his heart is racing and that this is something new to him.

"But I forgot my pen
Shit the bed again ...
Typical."

He realizes that he has forgotten the message of hope. He has fallen of his emotional high and realises that he has shit the bed, which seems to be a metaphor for messing up his life, or at least a part of it. He seems to be used to feeling emotional downs because he mentions that his it typical.

I think that was all the parts of the song covered. The feeback so far has been very appreciated, and anymore will be aswell. Also please question this, but no flaming please.

personally ive always thought tool had certain lyrics that were always a little more audible. saying that, i think a different song can form just by hearing only those lyrics.
