Chanted the devil with my song,
and got what i wanted all along
last night i thought that maybe devil = audience.
this way also the other lines on the devil might be seen in another light

what do you make of it?

I personally think of it as meaning "The Devil and all his literary friends such as God, Jesus and many, many more!".

OK since i have some more time now, i'll try to explain myself.

chanted the devil with my song and got what i wanted all along.
who is it that the singer chants?
i just can't think of the devil from the christian mythology.
to me it sounds more like the music company / audience
(your ideas?)

the thing that troubles me is that the same word is in the other line of the song (devil and his had me down...) and it would be logical to give the two the same meaning; it isn't common the use the same word for two different metaphors in the same song. that's why i don't credit the version 'bout <god and devil> and <devil and the deamons>.
(in this context it could logically be <silence leech> vs. <silent leagions> ??? )
so maybe i'm not teh devil, but maybe i'm his co.

i think these lyrics are in line with all the rest of the song this way.

I think it's "tempted the devil with my song, and got what I wanted all along" not very different in meaning to "I sold my soul to make a record, Dip shit"

Yeah, the point is, do you connect the two moments he says 'devil'?

Good point, that'd make sense, if ya take the "wish it all away" to mean give up his career. Like he's saying his career, record company, fans etc. or wateva have been keepin him away from his son. So he could be sayin if he cant make the two fit (rock star life and relationship with his son) devo'd come first... that what you're gettin at?

wouldnt chanted the devil be like him chanting the word devil over and over in his songs? im pretty sure tempted makes more sense and is correct.

This post isn't far off the mark....here's my 2 cents.

Take the full part into context, not just those two lines...also I think it's 'Enchanted' not chanted...it makes sense please read on.

Prayed like a martyr - dusk to dawn
Begged like a hooker - all night long
Enchanted the devil with my song
And got what I wanted all along

The first and second line is about a desire and it's fulfilling.

The first is him begging for it, praying like a martyr (unwavering and would die for it),

The second line is him trying to get it, Begged like a hooker (soliciting himself prostituting throw back to hooker with a penis?)

Enchanted the Devil with his song. Humanity as a collective is the devil, it's not a single entity or being. Think about it, when people congregate and fear and mob-mentality is in control what usually happens is pretty evil - The Inquisition...Witch Trials...Sunday Morning Mass.

And got what I wanted all along - When you dance with the devil...he usualy leads you. When an entertainer is popular he only stays that way by laying down to the man. This calls for personal compromise most times, or truely selling out. As we know, I'm the man and your the man, and he's the man; which are three people who represent a small peice of the audiance. tool has never given the audiance what it wanted but tool. tool is what it is and it can't be changed, however, the audiance does get a taste of the commercialised and watered down result with A Perfect Circle. And before you rip my asshole to gapping....count the amount of APC radio hits and tools radio hits and factor in how long each one has existed.

APC is a pop version of tool to the public (I cannot tell you how many people in my life STILL think APC songs are tool), this is how tool can remain what it is without comprimise because the devil is enchanted with APC, or Maynard's song.

Hmm... it does sound reasonable.
i often ask myself WHEN the songs are written.
if this one was written after the apc experience it might be right then.
thanks for the thought :)
