it often seems at times like maynard uses the phonetic similarity between word and phrase syllables to combine related concepts into an ambiguous word/phrase for the purpose of eliciting multiple layers of connoted meaning.

examples noticed:

on 'wings for marie pt.2'

where he says 'give me my. . . wings'

in portuguese, 'me my' also sounds like 'mi mai'
which translates to 'my mother'

so, it's as if he's saying 'give my mother (her well-deserved) wings'

. . .
probably more to this but thats what i noticed thus far

You are correct he's talking to his mother through the whole song (mostly).

you're the only one who can hold your head up high,
shake your fist at the gates saying,
"i have come home now,
fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. its time now, my time now,
give me my, give me my, wings"

he's telling his mother to say this when she gets to the gates of heaven.

well that i already knew.

it's the interesting coincidence of the words 'me my' sounding like 'mi mai=my mother' in portuguese.

if maynard didn't intend this, i'm inclined to think he noticed that. maybe.
