"omg the band members appear in the artwork!"

Why is that?

I think this might be why:

Lateralus was geared towards the idea of universal consciousness, one-mind, dissolution of the ego, breaking free, spiralling out, etc. etc. etc. The artwork was of one man - any man - and the various layers of his being, from purely physical, to mental faculties, to spiritual, and so on. Since the album was geared towards uniting everyone, there was no reason for the band members to appear. This album wasn't about them. "They" don't exist. "Crucify the ego, before it's far too late... you will come to find, that we are all one mind..." Lateralus was a call to all; to include pictures of the band members would be quite missing the point.

As has been stated several times, this album is once again "their" album. They're pissed. They're sad. They're frustrated. It's their blues. Their thoughts. Their experiences. Personal, intimate; it only makes sense that they include pictures of themselves, with their interests and characteristics included. While the purpose of specific pictures is yet to be discovered, the album art as a whole fits the themes of the album itself quite well.

10, 000 Days artwork > Lateralus artwork (they could have done SO much more with Lateralus, c'mon, 6 layers, they didn't even put full effort into it)
