it is a piece of music

I could use a violin to make all sorts of weird noises, or i could just strum randomly at a guitar. Or, in this case, I could record the sound effects of an atari video game and record some vocals at low pitch... and it would be music?

chalk_line
05-02-2006, 10:16 PM
Yes it would.

Radiohead's last few albums are considered music aren't they?

i make music myself and there are times when you can make musical noise but usually it has some context. me and my buddy can make some rhythmic nonsense noise and feedback and have something approaching music result from it.

other times we actually are trying to make a song but musically it just falls apart or whatever and is unlistenable even to me.

so, at times i would call noise or sound collages musical and even music.
other times a full blown song can be nothing but noise and not even close to musical to the listener.

that's it... i have no point.

do you consider this track music or noise/sounds/ambience?

or do you skip it?

It depends on my mood. If I'm looking to hear more singing songs, I'll skip and start over again at Vicarious or Jambi. Otherwise I'll let it play through as the "voice" on it is completely freaky and sounds "alien" to me! ;P

Pierrou

Well, to me, it's is part of the album, good to conclude, it's ambience...
When I listen to a tool album "full length" ( don't know how to say it in a better way ) I llsten to it... but it's true that it's not the kind of track i choose to listen when I just wanna ear a few tool songs...

I consider it ambience moreso than music. Pretty much it seems to serve as a come down after the rest of the album.

I think I would have been more appreciative of this track had it been placed before Right in Two. In that case, I wouldn't have felt kind of stiffed at the end of it all.

Personally i was disappointed in this track. Since Undertow, Tool has always included sonic interlude pieces, whether humorous (like Msg from H. M.) or not, but they were much stronger than this piece. Think of Cesaro Summability, Ions, or even Disgustipated: Those each contributed more and "fit" the "whole" better than this (frankly) weak piece. It just does not end the album on a satisfying note, imo. ;-(

Un coup de dés

it's a good example of "Music Concrete" and it's alot easier to listen to that most of that sort of music i've heard before. It's just meant to ease you out of that album, the real finale is Right in Two, Vigniti Tres just lets you clam down.

I'm too ignorant to know what this "music concrete" is, but at the end of an album, i Don't Want to be taken out of the state i've gotten into by some well-meaning attempt to ease me out. I prefer to hit a brick wall, as all i've just heard crashes in behind me in one mass effect; to be left saying "Wow, what a ride!!" not "gee, thanks for the gentle let-down, that was thoughtful of you."

Just preference, i guess.

I just ripped my CD to a Memorex cd-r so i can carry the album back and forth to work without messing up the nice jacket -- and i omitted Lipan Conjuring and Viginti Tres. One could argue that it's not the way the band meant the album to be heard, and maybe they'd be pissed off; but frankly, i'd just prefer to do without those two tracks.

Peace.

I find this track a great way to release my brain and ears from this album.
Kind of like the credits for a movie.
I was in 10,000 days for over 70 min... now I'm back here, safe, in my living room.
Viginti Tres allows me to be so.

Or maybe the schrooms are wearing off... :D

In and of itself, it is quite an odd track.
I doubt it will get much play on the radio.

all i know is it creeps me out. i thought faaip de oiad was creepy, because of how it gets louder and louder as if they are tracking him down. i wouldnt doubt it if my heart rate goes up when i listen to that song. but viginti tres is just scary to me, in no way is it a let down from the album for me, its almost like its telling you that you arent out of it yet.

noise, soundscape, ambeint etc is still music!! Go listen to some merzbow or something ;) I quite like music that pushes the defintion of what people normaly consider music...

I listen to quite abit of soundscaepe/ambeint & to be honest I dont normaly think tool are all that good at it but i really like this one think its prob the best ambeint "song" they have ever done.

i admit, that i voted for "shit" in the poll, but seeing all the efforts, threads to find its meaning, and all the possibilities you come up with, now im starting to beliew it is a sound. (or music- for me that doesnt really make a difference with such an artistic band - for me, this poll just asked whether it is shit or not)
But i still skip:-)

Pure shit. The one and only track on any Tool album to completely skip every time.

It ain't no Disgustipated, that's for sure.

Tool made this piece interesting. It's ambient, drone(ish), and looming. It doesn't have lyrics. I'd compare it to an ambient NIN track (although there are much better "ambient" musicians, just giving an example everyone here could relate too). Yes, it's music.

Why? It's new and original (for Tool at anyway). Then again, it's really not that different from Useful Idiot or (-) Ions.
