disoriented patient in hospital... (after being abducted)
nurse cannot get him to speak..
doc finally gets him to open up..
patient says..
"alrighty then.."
goes on to explain of his abduction..

not acid, kids... just written in a way to make most of you jump for joy in the name of drugs.

Song starts out lighthearted and fun... but as it moves along, it gets intense and serious..
It probably does this because many people who hear of alien abduction dont take it too seriously...... but
When you look deeper... there's a lot more to it... Much like this song.

There are many references in the song that people who claim to have been abducted have said... like
1) "their eyes looked right through me.."
2) "almond eyes"
3) "he floated away"
4) "terrifying"
5) "I dont want to be alone" when I talk about this..
6) "You believe me don't you, please believe what I just said"
7) "can't remember what they said" (which is why he wishes he had his pen so
he could've written everything down)

they said he was the chosen one... but he cannot remember all the revelations they told him because they erased a lot of his memory of the experience.

but he does remember being... "Strapped down to my bed, feet cold and eyes red, I'm out of my head, am I alive am I dead, can't remember what they said god damn shit the bed."

Patient was strapped down on their observation table... and the whole experience was so terrifying that he shit himself on their table... (or "bed")

i believe that shit the bed means that he "fucked up".

"but i forgot my pen, shit the bed again - typical." i.e. oh man i really fucked up here, supposed to inform everyone of their fate and i don't even have a pen! (smacks forehead?)

this makes me believe he is a waster

reference to birkenstocks (hippies) and right after the "banana" ripped through the sky he says "fuck me it's gotta be dead head chemistry" i.e. holy shit i can't believe what i am seeing, it's gotta be these drugs (hallucinogens)

"they chose me? i didn't even graduate fucking highschool" maybe he was having too much fun? eh? eh?

please note, i am not saying he was not abducted, i think he was high as a kite and abducted. thus making his story even less believable to the good doctor in lost keys.

but it would be funny if maynard changed the lyrics to gaping lotus experience to:

i had a friend once he took some acid, now he thinks he's the messiah
satan, satan, satan! ;P

obviously there are drug references...

just like there are sexual references in 4 degrees or Stinkfist... but neither of which are about sex.

but I understand where you're coming from-

and it was a stealth that ripped through the sky- not a banana. (the "banana" was just part of the play on words)

sorry, perhaps i misrepresented my thoughts. i am not saying that the song is about drugs, i am saying that he was ripped when it happened. that's all.

Believing "shit the bed" means "fucked up.."

Generally speaking... agreed.

But in this particular song I think it's used both literal and figurative.

just like experiences people have like this in actuality, it doesn't matter if he was "just tripping" or if he "really was" abducted, or whatever.. what matters is the experience.

This wasn't a literal story of an actual abduction...

but what the song does is shed light on stuff the gov't insists on covering up or flat out denying altogether... area 51 and alien/ufo.

cd does have a couple political songs... particularly The Pot and this song...

but Tool does it cleverly enough lyrically and musically to cloak it in LSD and POT... it keeps all of the meatheads buying cds and thrashing at their show for the wrong reasons... and keeps anyone who can see beyond the tree appreciative for the right reasons..

the dont ALIENATE anyone

This song is written much like Stinkfist where it has theme on the surface but overall has a much deeper meaning. In Rosetta's case the surface theme is an acid trip but I strongly believe it is really about alien abduction.

It's a Bill Hicks reference. Pretty clever, I thought.

also, I want to buy this (http://www.threadless.com/submission/11960/stealth_banana)

Whether he was abducted or went on a bad trip, I dont believe that he ever actually tells anyone his story. In Lost Keys he is catatonic, and at the end of Rosetta Stoned, he states that he is brain dead and that he shit his bed again. I think he is trapped in his head with all of these crazy memories and thoughts but cannot actually express himself to anyone at all (or maybe he mumbles unintelligibly). I do believe that he went on a bad trip though, one of the lines is "the blotter got right on top of me" which I take to mean that something on a stamp, prolly LSD was way too intense right from the start. Also, if I am correct, he also says "Can anyone tell me why all the sudden the peanuts dance?" and what can that be other than a hallucination?

Thought I'd add that "banana" probably isn't supposed to mean that he actually saw a banana in the sky...rather a banana shaped craft...

Isn't there a boomerang company or something called "Flying Banana," etc?

If someone had to describe a boomerang's shape, I could understand them comparing it to a banana...and a boomerang or banana shape isn't exactly an unreasonable shape for an alien craft to be...

No, it's a Bill Hicks reference.

Ahem,

See, everyone got boners over the technology, and it was pretty incredible. Watching missiles fly down air vents, pretty unbelievable. But couldn't we feasibly use that same technology to shoot food at hungry people? Know what I mean? Fly over Ethiopia, "There's a guy that needs a banana!" SHOOP. The Stealth Banana. Smart fruit! I don't know.
