Nah, I think it's a totally different bassline

Yeah its a second bassline. It wasn't clear to me when I listen it with small earphones but I only heard it very clear with my headphones. It's a acoustic bass right?? Just like the one at the Salival version of pushit???

its a piano ( or possibly acoustic guitar but it has that hammer-hitting-strings piano sound to me - me mams a pianist)

No way, it's to loose for a piano-like thing. It's very clear on my headphones around 0:39 and it's on the right side. Atleast I love it but I wanna know for sure :P

A piano should make more sense but maybe they gave MJK a acoustic bass.

doesnt sound like an electric bass

My impression is that it's Danny triggering a sample. It sounds like a stick hitting an open electric bass string, but it also sounds slightly electronic when listening closely (either from sampling and the resultant lack of variation in tone, or from manipulation of the sample). Also, it's very much his rhythmic style and fits in with the rest of the drum/percussion part. As far as I can tell, this part drops out when the tabla/other triggered percussion comes in (at "your way home"). Incidentally, I think it's the same sample of Danny's that you hear in the Salival version of Pushit.

Or it could just be a 2nd (electric) bass part, tapping on the string with sticks.

Also... I just noticed that the low reverberant drum/rattling detuned string sound is also at the very end of Merkaba on Salival.

It sounds like a unamplified bass

it sounds like the same instrument that is used in the song "Mothers of the Disappeared" by U2. Listen to the intro of that song...sounds very similar.

i've just read a french interview in which danny says smthing like that "what i like in tool, is the way the roles can change : adam plays sometimes his guitar like a bass guitar, with loud and weigthy rhythms, whereas justin comes to play crazy things in the foreground. I love that, I love that liberty they play with"

could be maynard, I know I've seen him playing this guitar hero sized guitar live, or it could be danny making up a new percussion instrument again
