i've heard that their record label originally wanted lateralus to be a cover album.of course,the band wanted it to be something more meaningful and artistic than that,but the label insisted that they do the commercialized,market-friendly bulshit that would guarantee them some big bucks.so tool decided to do a song in which they basically rip the label's throat out and then ask them if that's good enough for them.that said,i would love to see them do a cover album some day,i think "spoonman" by soundgarden and "fortuna imperatrix mundi" from carmina burana would be awesome.i know this interpretation probably doesn't apply very well to the actual lyrics,but i like it nonetheless.
