I'm really very glad the talkbox was put in this song too cause It's one of the best on the album. It fits in perfectly to the song. I can't get over the diversity of this album.

I'm glad Adam picked the right song to do the talkbox solo on. It wouldn't work for any song, and I'm glad he didnt force it.

Adam.

That's like saying Adam plays guitar and Maynard functions the wah-pedal.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure it's maynard vocalizing trough the tube while adam's playing. It's absolutely possible. Don't know live, but for the studio recording, don't see why couldn't they do it.

because you need to get the feel for the talkbox, before itll sound good, and like a wah pedal, you cant just wank it, the mouthing becomes a part of the riff. it takes hundreds, mabye thousands of hours of practice to get a talkbox to sound that good. 2 people cant do it.

The feel for the talk box? That's the point in tool ain't it? everyone feeling other guys way of playing and creating layers with their own music.
And you CAN wank a wah pedal. Just moving it to the rythm of the song makes the trick. Listen to jimmi hendrix.

ITs sooo posible for maynard to make that shit sound great. To synchronize with adam. I mean listen closely, that's maynard's voice.

Yep. Cuz that's why Adam talked about learning the Talkbox and getting tips from people. Because in the end, he wanted Maynard to have beat him to it and learned it first, so he could do half of it instead of Adam. Gimme a break, have you ever heard the talkbox effect before? You don't hear the damn voice through the thing. You may think you do, but nope sorry. Do you play guitar? Are you familiar with how these types of effects work? Thanks for playing.

well, after i passed through my memories of Bon Jovi, which were just unavoidable (come on: Tool, a talkbox, uh, maybe not) but I kinda did like the what I'll prefer to call the "toolbox" effect. Somehow seems a little too mainstream rock n' roll for Tool to pull off, but it manages to work...quite well I might add. Jambi is an awesome song.

I still think they missed an awesome opportunity to absolutely rock you the fuck out of your skin at minute 6 and 50 seconds, with that mindfuck of a guitar riff that was begging for a simple and brutal 4/4 drumbeat to bring it home.

I like when Peter Frampton uses it. Do You Feel Like I Do?

Also Floyd's Pigs makes good use.

That was pretty funny about Richie Sambora... ah come on Bon Jovi, well it's Bon Jovi lol.

HEll yes though, the solo on Jambi has got to be one of Adam's best solos ever. And usually talkboxes just sound super gay, Frampton's use (no offense) of it for instance - it just always seemed super corny to me. Have never heard "Those Shoes", will have to check it out.

The Richie Sambora thing was pretty good, but this is just brilliant. It could be a reply to nine out of every ten threads here. Social commentary ftw.

While I DO love the song, and the talkbox DOES sound cool... I hate to burst your bubbles, but the solo is really only three notes. Just three notes, typical Adam Jones style. Nothing complex or difficult whatsoever. The only reason is sounds SO cool is because of the talkbox.

Pigs, by Pink Floyd for example, makes WAY better use of the talkbox. They know how to actually play stuff that goes along with the effect so well, that it REALLY sounds like the guitar is talking.

Still, Jambi rules.

ok, quite a few different tracks ive heard with talk boxes, the artist actually speaks into the device. is this the case with adam? i really cant make out any words and it really doesnt sound like hes saying anything. in a few areas it might sound like hes growling or breathing heavily, but other than that, it doesnt sound like hes saying anything.

another thing, is it in Jambi that he uses the "pipe bomb"? and what is this supposed to sound like?

From Wikipedia:

"The performer then "shapes" the sound by opening or closing their mouth. The performer can also mouth words, with the resulting effect sounding as though the instrument is speaking. This "shaped" sound exits the performer's mouth, and when it enters a microphone, the instrument/voice hybrid is heard."

So, if I understand correctly, the guitarist actually isn't vocalizing, or making any kind of sound with his own throat, but simply shaping words with his mouth? Just mouthing?

Sounds bizarre. O_o

Yeah talk boxes are crazy.
I enjoy them because no one use of it will ever be the same, because the shape of the players mouth will never be exactly the same.
Adam makes very good use of it.

The talk box gets the signal from the amp's speaker out unlike typical pedals which are placed between the guitar and amp or between preamp and poweramp. The actual sound comes out from the tube where it's shaped in the player's mouth and then picked through a microphone. The sound also needs to be blended with the guitar signal. So, a talkbox needs a very complicated setup and isn't easy to use.
