at :41 seconds and again at 1:11 and so forth... what is that sound? i can't tell if it is a voice, a guitar, or some instrument i've never heard of. either way, i love it and think it adds alot to the song. anyone know what it is?

My take on it for years has been that it's a voice. But in retrospect I think I've been mistaken and that it's actually a guitar effect.

it's like adams guitar ate a baby. then gave birth to it ... somehow. uhh, it's good!

I'm not sure, but I read somewhere that Danny has something that sounds like a "monk chanting" triggered by a pad in the Lateralus album. I can't tell if this is what that would be referring to.

I'm pretty sure that's a voice is we're talking about that tribal scream or whatever?

I'm not really sure but....muted violin is my guess

Dude, it's a guitar. In fact, it's the same effect he uses shortly thereafter with the wah. It's just very "feedbacked" and processed. It's the same instrument.

Have you heard a muted violin?

Yes. But that's neither here nor there.

It's not as though we're just trying to pull the sound it's making out of thin air. Shortly after the sound is made Adam starts using the pedal more but you can hear the tone/effect is roughly the same, just with a different modulation (with a pedal)

Of course, maybe I'm wrong and it's someone choking a hamster into the microphone.

They pull off the sound in concert so I'd imagine it's some effect that Danny has triggered in his sound system thing or it's just guitar feedback from Adam.

Sounds like a voice run through a bunch of effects and synths. I am 100% sure that it is triggered either by Adam or Danny. Those soundbytes are not played "live".
