I guess it was like this when Lateralus came out... but I just getting into Tool then, not having expectations of what I think it should of sounded like. I thought it was awesome just like I think this album is. Tool isn't the air you breathe that just turned to poison. Go outside and get some fresh air and have an epiphany. It's a band. It's new. It's different. It's not some nu-metal band sounding exactly the same.

They probably wouldn't spend a lot of time recording new stuff for that reason. The more likely scenario is that the songs were lying around wholly or mostly finished. Bands TYPICALLY have a bunch of stuff like that lying around. For example, System of a Down released a whole album of left over stuff; Metallica had about a whole CD of stuff of completely different stuff that was being traded before St. Anger came out.

Perfectly summed up. No one ever questioned the recording quality, the lack of epic buildups, that turn into awful sounding chord progressions, recycled and overly repetative riffs, quite long segues, sketchy songwriting, average guitarwork- on lateralus.

Wether you love or hate the album, I don't understand how people aren't at least considering these very valid questions.

No, please read again. No one questioned these missing elements on Lateralus. There were no rumours of a hoax, b-side album, and for the most part fans were unified in their opinion it was an incredible album. I find 10KD to lack pretty much everything i love about Tool's music, and theres so many people questioning these same things that its enough to warrant a fair discussion about it.
