I know this is going to get some of you kids up in arms, but on listening to this song again today, at about four and half minutes into the song, the heavy bit and then with the talk box, it sounds exactly like some Metallica song off Reload.

No lies.

I oughtta kick your wanna be Aussie ass. Metallica? METALLICA!?! What are you, nuts? Granted, I have not listened to Metallica since before they put out that black album, so I really don't know what it sounds like, but the fact still remains that this comparison should be stricken from the record. Bad UtUm. Bad, bad Utum.

Metallica, 'Reload', Track 3, 'The House Jack Built'...

Fast-forward 10 years:

Tool, '10,000 Days', Track 2, 'Jambi'...

The talk-box thingy sounds similar. That's all.

Yes, it sounds like Metallica's 'The House Jack Built'

UtUmNo1 is right.

The end.

It sounds SO MUCH more like "drowning in a burning mirror" (ok actually that's not the lyric, it's just always what it's sounded like to me.) It's off Metallica's first album. First song I believe. One riff in it fucking destroys. It's just like this song's bridge. Honestly how can anyone not say this entire song rips apart anything Tool has ever done that tried to be "heavy" (Opiate and Undertow as albums, Hooker with a Penis, Ticks and Leeches).

I have to admit, I thought metallica too at first.
and then after a while I thought fuck it, it's far better then metallica.

Very good song, but i really dont think it sounds like Metallica....Just because the riffs are heavy doesn;t mean they sound like Metallica ;)

My first reaction when first hearing this song was "Hmm.. Metallica". Like, right when the song starts, and the guitar riff has that kind of "rolling" sound.

this song gets amazing at 4:09 when the guitar solo kicks in. i fuckin love that part. the tones he gets with his guitar in that solo are absolutely amazing.

I think the opening riff sounds most like Metallica. If any of it does.

Dr. Jake Destructo

That 'heavy bit' right before the solo sounds like Metallica because it is mutlitracked several times over- Just like Metallica does, who often record the same guitar lines over 8 times to achieve a heavier sound.

They didn't invent the concept, but they did popularize it. Now every metal band and their roadies are using it.

UtUmNo1
04-23-2006, 04:27 PM
To avoid further confusion, the part I'm referring to starts at 3:56 into the song. It's the heavy palm muted chugging riff itself and not the general sound. The talk box is also very similar as mentioned above, but it is the riff I'm more alluding to.

bullshit dont come here and compare tool to sell out metalica($popalica), there is also the possibility that for 5 seconds in adams life he has just played a riff similar to metalica, and maybe not realised it due to the massive abundance of bands using the same riff(it is just powerchords and bends/W effects)oh fuck it this one tool song far outways metalicas whole career$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$(if you havent realised i dislike metalica(i mean "$poptalica)metalica by no means ever did anything totally original all they did was play the same chords as every other metal band so i would say adam never used metalicas riff but most likely someone elses that metalica actually did rip off,

The breakdown section starting around 4:00 does sound a little like the breakdown leading up the guitar solo from Fuel, which is on Reload.

But look, this isn't the first song to use a chugging, muted drop-D riff.

Jambi could not possibly sound like Metallica in any way, shape or form - because I like Jambi.

This song sounds nothing like metallica. But it does sound alittle like the start of hooker with a penis, and that's just fine. I like hooker with a penis it's a great song. TOOL wrote it and played it so if they want 2 reuse a part of thy're music thy're entitled to do so. It's not a complete copy, and i for shure know that the guy's wern't sittin around stumped and decided 2 just sample an old song. THEY ARE MUCH MORE CREATIVE THEN THAT. U must not really know this band at all after 14 years of dedication 2 making masterpieces.

P.S. stopped listening 2 metallica after the black album. U should 2

hahah give me a break.

"metalica by no means ever did anything totally original "

haha yeah they only helped create an entire genre of metal, combining punk with Venom type metal.

Ok, I can see it's not that popular to compare Tool to anyone else, but when I first heard Jambi, I was thinking some of the heavier parts with seriously heavy drums and bass reminded me of Disturb's earlier sound off of the self titled Disturbed album. Let the flaming commence.

But that's the only comparison I made..didn't even think of or really remind me of Metallica all that much until it was mentioned here. Maybe a little now in parts, but again not very much at all. As far as Tool goes, to me there is no other band like them either Musically, lyrically or vocally. I really put them in a class all by themselves.

BDT
04-28-2006, 12:31 PM
I too put them in a class by themselves. But they do have some Pink Floyd influence.

BDT
04-28-2006, 12:42 PM
Also if you listen to Alice in Chains song "frogs" it has a hint of "bottom" in it especially when the music cuts off and Layne Stanley starts talking.

Don't know about Metallica but the main riff reminds me a lot of Buzz's stuff from Fantomas.

But like someone already said, there are a few songs that have a similar riff.

just playing...I don't own any Metallica after the Black album, so you could be right for all I know.

holotrope

between 3:52 and 3:53, it sounds like britney spears. There was this one song on one of her albums which had the exact same second... Uh oh! I smell a conspiracy theory.

Now, seriously, I have listened to Metalica for years, I loved them when I was a kid, and I still listen to their old stuff from time to time. And even though I knew they were crap, I bought their post-...And Justice for All albums, because I thought they might get back on track. I even LISTENED to St. Anger (extremely ill-advisedly). But when I heard Jambi, all I thought was "Tool's baaaaaack!!"

But more importantly, there's no significant way that this song ties into any Metallica song. I don't even think the comparison holds. House that Jack built sounds nothing like this, and is on Load anyway, and the solo section for Fuel is such an insignificant part of such a wanky song, that I can't even believe someone admitted that they listened to it enough to make a comparison!
