listen to the tales and romanticize
how we follow the path of the hero

boast about the day when the rivers overrun
how we rise to the height of our halo

listen to the tales as we irrationalize [rationalize / all ration out lies] ???
Our way into the arms of the savior
failing all the trials and the tribulations

none of us have actually been there
not like you

the ignorant fit within the congregation [see note 1 below]
gather around spewing sympathy
spare me

none of them could even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hypocrites
wont see

but nothing but the collect of Judas [see note 2 below]
who could deny you were the one who illuminated
your little piece of the divine

this little light of mine
the gift you passed on to me
i won't let it shine, but guide you safely on your way
your way home...

what are they going to do when the light goes down
without you you to guide them all to zion?

what are they gonna do when the rivers overrun
other than tremble incessantly ?

high is the way
but our eyes are upon the ground
you were the light and the way
they'll only read about
I only pray heaven knows
when to lift you out

10000 days in the fire is long enough [see note 3 below]
you're going home

you're the only one who can hold your head up high
shake your fist at the gates sayin'
"i have come home now fetch me the spirit, the son and the father,
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended

"its time now, my time now, give me my, give me my wings!"

"give me my, give me my, give me my, give me my, give me my wings...."

you are the light, the way, that they will only read about

set as i am in my ways and my arrogance
burning on through talks to Paul and believers [see note 4 below]
you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
Judith Marie, unconditional one

daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence
difficult to see you in this light
please forgive this, bold suggestion
should you see your maker's face tonight
look em in the eye, look em in the eye, and tell em
i never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one
hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home...

note 4:
the apostle Paul was the greatest teacher of the christian church

Paul wasn't an apostle, he was a disciple. His roman name was Saul, and he was one of the worst persecutors of Christians in the early history of the church. He had a sudden revelation upon his horse, fell and was blinded until Peter saved him. He then became christian, and began sharing the views of the bible unlike the apostles, who were afraid.

I think it's "feigning" the trials and tribulations, not "failing."

But great job!

Also, Paul called himself an "apostle" even though he wasn't one of the Twelve. Seriously.

If we are going to nitpick then technically it was Ananias who "saved" Saul. Furthermore, the Bible mentions in several places that Paul was an apostle. In fact he describes himself as being an apostle in Romans, which he is thought to have actually wrote.

(Wings for marie) "Marie" is the middle name of Maynard James Keenan's deceased mother, Judith Marie Keenan.

As Keenan explains on commentary on aMOTION, his mother suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. The length of time between her paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days.

Alright, then I can see the apostle reference.

As far as I can tell those lyrics, seem/feel pretty damn accurate...nice work...this song is the one of the most touching pieces of work I have ever heard.

On note 2, I'm pretty sure he's saying "but enough about the collective Judas." Saying, enough about those jerks/betrayers I was just talking about.

EDIT: Well, maybe not. That wouldn't make sense given what you've written after that. I'll have to listen again.

You don't know what you're talking about. An apostle is someone who sees Christ. A disciple is someone who he teaches. There were 12 disciples, Saul or Paul was not one of them. Paul is considered an apostle because he saw a vision of Christ on his journey to Damascus. His name was then changed from Saul to Paul after his conversions.

A bit off topic, I like this quote from Nietzsche's The First Christian. "Paul, after all, remains Saul, the persecutor of God." Talking about how people never change.

I think you got this part right. It makes sense since he shifts the focus to Judith directly after.

Also another small nitpick: Towards the end I'm fairly sure it's "burning up through talks of Paul and believers" ie: being angry/frustrated by the blind faith of organized religion (as he has expressed many times in past songs).

Does anyone else feel like this is supposed to be a funeral? The rain and thunder help create the mood for it being outside. "Listen to the tales and romanticize" is very similar to how a funeral goes. People gathering around and chatting about the life lost, often spewing sympathy, but not really meaning any of it.

It's definately "Feigning all the trials and tribulations."

The bass line and mood reminds me of Floyd....sorry. Anyways. Great stuff. Best material yet from them as far as I'm concerned.

I heartily agree about the Floyd-ian mood. I got some of that during the wah-wah portion of Jambi as well. Sounds like something off of Animals...

I agree that this song has a funeral like feel to it. Wing for Marie (Part 1) it seems like he's deciding what to say to the "ghouls" at the funeral and in 10,000 Days he's actually saying it. So now he's actually giving a "Eulogy". He had a lot to say...

you know... I'm really hearing this:

High is the way, but our lives are upon the ground
You are the light and the way they only read about
I only pray Allah knows when to lift you out
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home

Maynard's not really one for contracting words to the extent that "heaven" would have to be in order to be pronounced the way that word is being sung.
"Allah" may not be the correct word in the context of Maynard's mother's religion, but seeing as Islam is to Christianity as Christianity is to Judaism, then it's a technically correct name to use for god (and fits better than Jehovah or Yaweh)

Thoughts?
