It may be near the bottom of my list. But it's still pretty cool.

It's absolutely brilliant. The drums, guitar and bass, each on their own were absolutely sensational. A lot of this album seems to be more subtle, in terms of appreciating the drum-guitar-bass mix.
The talkbox solo is fucking powerful. It reminded me of some twisted Manson-like guitar solos, and that Meshuggah influence is deeply evident in this song.
But really, Maynard on this song is absolutely incredible. He is a brilliant vocalist and his diversity, both in tone and emotionally, is matched by no one. His voice continues to be what will always separate Tool from other bands of this nature.

And how ridiculous is it when at the end of Jambi he suddenly morphs into a demonic, intense rage, and the song lands up scaring the fucking shit out of you?!

The main riff is weak. They should've started out with the drums as well, instead of doing the riff first, then adding drums. That being said, I like the song, and the use of the talk box is rawking.

I like it and the words are great. Somehow reminded of my own life, which is weird. The kick off riff is kinda offbeat but you know..

This is probably one of my favorite songs on the album right now. Maynard's voice sounds great.

It's a relief hearing this song after Vicarious, the vocals are soothing.

I love it as well. One of the strongest tracks on the album. The clarity of the voice gives this song power.

this might be my favorite on the album. a near journey for tool

I don't like it except for the guitar solo, that thing is crazy.

It's a great song. I would say one of Tool's best yet. And even at the end of vicarious which is another brilliant song, I am enticed by the thought of Jambi coming up next. It's like, how could this get any better? Oh wait... here we go

<3 Jambi

The intro kinda sucks, reminds me of Emotive way too much. After Maynards voice actually is in sync with the beat, the song is incredible.

Definitely my fav so far. The bass at 1:03 owns me.

And the whole "dim my eyes" thing tinged my soul.

So very very good.

yeah definitely better than vicarious which I think is a step toward the mainstream
but I still think maynard wrote some mediocre lyrics for it, the music is great, especially when celebrating 420!!! maynards lyrics almost all ryhme, which is ok but when your dedicated to makin lyrics ryhme it often limits what your tryin to say...in my opinion

Exactly.

BTW, the lyrics at that part are imo:

Breate in union
So as one
Survive, another day
in seasons

Silently just sing your poison
Silently just stay out of my way

that I wish section before the "dim my eyes" is killer

I don't particularly like it, I agree with the folks who say the guitar is weak. And the squak box always just seemed pretty gimmicky to me when anyone but Peter Frampton does it. But I'll give it time, it wouldn't be the first Tool song that grew on me.

It's strongly growing in me... I'm loving the mood and the lyrics. Maynard's vocals here are just awsome, definitely one of my favorites along with Right in Two and 10,000 Days.

Odd, I ONLY think talk-boxes are gimmicky when Peter Frampton does it (Maybe Weezer too.) Have you ever heard Pigs (3 Different Ones)?

I love this song, Maynards vocals are soothing which in contrast with the depth of whats going on musically really turns me on, musically that is. This is one of those songs that I frequently find myself in a trance-like state while listening to it. Not many songs can do that for me so when I find a jewel like that I tend to hold on to it and savor it. Or maybe I just did to much acid.............................................

or not enough:-)

After about 5 listens I'm still not sure. I like the beginning singing alot. Towards the middle Maynard's singing gives me an "Undertow" vibe, which isn't a bad thing. at 4:45 ish the crazy guitar pig squealing effect reminds me of Pigs by Floyd. Hmm. I enjoy this song.

yeah i like this song, theres a sweetass headbanging part right at 3:54 when justin slides the bass down then they play that lick.. wow i just started headbanging when i heard it, so awesome.

I really really hate Maynard's phrasing and lyrics on this song. He just kinda sits on top of the composition and never really mixes in with the rythm or melody.

I saw there was a tthread about Floyd influence on here the other day about this song, so I suppose that's already been discussed. So you have 3 elements - that bass line, Maynard's reference to "The Dark Side", and the talk box. I guess this has to be Floyd influenced.

It takes a while to gel together, it's really proggie, and there are some rather harsh transitions. But believe me after about 25 listens it all starts to come together. It's "Mystical Metal" lol. Tool has invented a new style of music. One of their better songs imo. And that solo is just shit dislodging... Adam sounds like a man on that one. Sounds like he sprouted some hair on his chest.

*raises hand*

I think the vocal melody and pitch of his voice do not compliment the song for 60% or so of it. There are parts more towards the middle and end where he catches on. Sometimes having a harder song and using high/soft vocals as a contrast works....I don't think this was one of those times. There are so many gaps that are just begging for vocals to fill some of them.

Also, the lyrics (more often than not) are predictable rhymes that remind me of a cat in the hat book or a love poem someone would write around the age of 10. Maybe that was the intention? I dunno. I just think he should've sat on this one longer.

Maybe this is what he was going for though. If so, it's just not my bag..and that's ok.

The music = a bad ass mofo, however.

While I like it, I have a friend who is another Tool fan who doesn't because of the so-called "metal gallop" right at the beginning. He also does a really funny, but inaccurate impression of it, air guitar and all.
