Go downtown, find people wearing black, greasy hair in their eyes... the ones with the tight pants and 10 size too small sweatshirts... have them play some of their music.

Then you'll learn ackward.

heheh its funny he says that like Maynard and tori Amos mean nothing together.
To clear things up they are intimate friends, and have performed together, and the song in particular 'Muhammed My friend' They both sing in Ballad style.
Oh wait, is the start of The pot, ballad style?
... :D yep

My girlfriend said the intro sounded like Tori Amos. I'd have to agree with her.

I thought Maynard's vocals throughout the song (but NOT the intro) took a whole lot of cues from Tori too.

Wow, I thought I would be laughed at.
I think it was indeed Professional Widow. Probably some other songs too that I can't remember at the moment. And yeah you're right, not just the intro.

Everybody thought the intro was ackward.
Anybody who thought the intro was ackward... probably not listened to Mars Volta a great deal.

my wife said exactly the same thing when she first heard this song. a lot of the lyrics (turns of speech and construction) are VERY tori-esque. anyone think that this might be a cover of an un-released tori track or, at least, a co-write with tori? i think that adam mentioned in the GW article that this was their 'studio track.' it doesnt seem like too much of a stretch that, in the studio, they decided to do a cover of a rare (read: unreleased) tori track.
