Okay, seriously... i like this song, but back when i heard the original version of Wings for Marie in 2002, it was so much better.

It's the same song, but shorter. What makes it better?

the drums are amazing in the live recording.

You're right.... I've been in love with the piece for 4 years... and it's the same damned thing.... but things have a tendency for sounding better played live....

it's not the same song no lyrics.

You'll find a lot of things like that from live shows that will find their way onto a song somewhere. Parabol, for example, can basically be heard in the middle an Ozzfest show from '98.
It makes sense, if you think about it. How many times are you just picking around when you find something you really like? Then don't you spend some time over the next days/weeks/months/years nursing it into a full riff or part of a song?
That's all that's happening here. I'm sure Justin has similar riffs/sections that he keeps on file, just like Maynard keeps lyrical snippets all over the place and Danny has a big stockpile of drum loops/fills that he likes.
That's what musicians do.

Exactly. I know a lot of people hate TMV, but the "jams" at their live shows end up on their cd's as parts of songs. It's just what they do.

I'm not sure what that means, but either way can we not start this?

I am going to have to defend TMV. In my opinion, of all the bands still playing music, TMV are #2 to Tool. Like I said this is my opinion and I am sure I will get bashed for saying this somehow.

I wonder how many songs on this album were developed during Lateralus, and how many are really "new"?

Danny's drumming on this track reminds me of King Crimson in parts...

I just feel that the new album is very devoid of dynamics. In a song sense. Wings for Marie/10,000 days is fairly bland. It's very ambient throughout, they do like a 5 second loud part (that isn't too great, probably because they just stop it). Then 10,000 days is the same thing, and at around 5:30min they do a big build-up that could make the song incredible, but instead, they don't build to anything... it's really dissapointing.
I feel that the drumming in this live snippet is much more effective than the quarter note droning on the album.

what i find wierd, is that in all the reviews i heard this was "the heaviest album yet" maynard hardly screams, and its really not that heavy at all....
This ambience is great though, i hate to sound like im complaining, or like i dislike this stuff, i love it all. I sincerely think this is their best work yet, but its so different for tool.

I dont get why people are saying its all that different. Its not, i can hear tool on their other three (four for the pedantic) albums here but with a shit load of pink floyd influence.
Anyone else find it ironic that he condemns us all as voyeurs on Vicarious then sings this very personal song about the death of his mum? I wonder if its intentional, and if so why?

i think you got this wrong... he is not singing about the death of his mom, but his personal experience during that specific situation... you can't really compare one thing to the other... and IMO vicarious is not about voyeurity per se but much more about "getting kicks" out of other peoples pain and suffering while doing nothing better than sit around all day... could be just me, though...

I agree TMV was not only MUCH louder... they were also MUCH better. SOAD seemed very lethargic and uninterested

Wow, that IS an early version of Wings! I don't believe it! 2002 you say?
Doesn't the droning at the end sound like a part of Viginti Tres?

it's from the Tool Oklahoma 11 16 2002 Remaster Dvdrip bootleg. a lot of effort went into the sync and sound quality of this, and the video's also one of the best i've seen on a boot. I dont think i'm allowed to post a link but with this info you should be able to find it no probs.

Part of why TMV sounds better than SOAD, is because system sucks. And Mars Volta doesn't suck.

tmv is far from suck. i absolutely love how their live jams end up in their recordings. i listened to the live cd from the de-loused special aussie tour edition many many times. some of the improv there is mind blowing, shivers through the bones kinda stuff.
then when my favourite jam from the live disc pops up on track 1 of 'francis...', gahhh... its blissful. seen them live twice, fucking loved it, but i can understand people not getting into the show if not intimately aquainted with the recordings. (i would have seen them 3 times but lost my ticket... i prefer not to remember those days... listening to the record and sobbing softly)
