Who are you to wave your finger
You must have been out your head
Eye-balls deep in muddy water
You practically raised the dead
Rob the grave to ? the cradle
And burn the evidence down
Soap box house of cause and glass????? Oh,
Don’t be tossin’ your stones around.

You musta been high
You musta been high
You musta been

Foot in mouth and head up ass, oh
What you talkin’ bout’
Difficult to dance ‘round this one
‘Til you pull it out, boy

You musta been so high
You musta been so high

Steel?????
Kangaroo?????
???????

Any help is appreciated.

Who are you to wave your finger? You must have been out your head.
I hold deep in muddy waters, you practically raised the dead
Rob the grave to snow the cradle, then burn the evidence down.
Soapbox house of cards and glass, so don’t go tossing your stones around.

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been…

Foot in mouth and head up ass, so whatcha talking ‘bout?
Difficult to dance round this one, till you pull it out, boy.

You must have been so high
You must have been so high

Steal, borrow, reap and save your shady inference.
Kangaroo done, hung the juror with the innocent.

Now your withered seeds are chosen
And the golden images up in your eye.

When you pissed all over my black kettle, you must have been high, high.
You must have been high, high.

Who are you to wave your finger? So full of it.
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters, fucking hypocrite
Liar, lawyer, mirror show me, what’s the difference?
Kangaroo done, hung the guilty with the innocent

Now your withered seeds are chosen
And the golden images up in your…
High, high.

When you pissed all over my black kettle, you must have been…

So who are you to wave your finger? Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You are clearly out of your mind.

Leaving things out in the ground, trapped without a reason, leaving things out in the ground…

Liar, lawyer, mirror, foil, what’s the difference?
Kangaroo, beast, don’t needs guilt in every government.

Now your withered seeds are chosen
And the golden images up in your eye, eye.

When you pissed all over my black kettle, you must have been high, high, high, high.
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters. Eyeballs deep in muddy waters.
Catch up with lies.
You must happen.
Hurts on mine.

considering how warped in general the lyrics of this song are it could well be hair.

i hadn't thought of that, good insight, this is very possibleThanks, and I really like how, despite being significantly more political on this album, Maynard made every attempt at keeping the shots subtle. I like that.

Openly politically-charged bands, and this includes those who do it well, get boring after awhile.

This album definitely takes more time to absorb than most Tool albums, but that's definitely not a bad thing. It's not better or worse than any of the previous albums, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

The second time around, it's either

"Liar, lawyer, mirror, voyeur, what’s the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent."

or

"Liar, lawyer, mirror, for you, what’s the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent."

Contextually, either makes sense, but I can't aurally distinguish which it would be. In the first instance, it would be begging the difference in two separate comparisons: liar/lawyer and mirror/voyeur. The latter would be only one comparison (liar/lawyer), and upon reflection wondering what the difference between the two would be. I'm leaning more toward "voyeur."

Andorion
04-20-2006, 09:33 AM
At the very end:

Eyeballs deep in muddy waters.
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters,
Catch up with lies.
You must have been out your mind.

The first one is definitely "bloody waters", and I think the second one is "Elbows".

Eyeballs deep in bloody water
Elbows deep in muddy waters

or maybe even "Eyeballs dripping bloody water" for the first line... these two are difficult.

^^black kettle

"What Black Kettle may have trusted were his own traditions. As a Peace Chief following pipe tradition, he would have been taught the four central tenets of faith, truth, humility and respect. Black Kettle is remembered as much for how he lived as how he died."

if the song is about lawyers and the court system[see kangaroo court: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_court]

then this would make sense.

OG-Whoop

Some thoughts:

"That's like the pot calling the kettle black" is an american saying regarding someone being a hypocrite.

The song is not about the war in Iraq.

It is more a diatribe against the courts/lawyers/police for trumped up charges in a marijuana case where the cops, lawyers and/or judges are known to also smoke a little reefer. The last line of the song tells me the arresting officer is the one hitting the bong. (at least on the surface - needs more listens to go deeper to be sure just how many people/bands/celebrities/institutions this song is really telling to go fuck themselves...)

Along those lines:

the "Rob the grave to snow the cradle" line makes sense because a "Snow Job" is when you set someone up.

"High eye" is saying the person has a "holier-than-thou" attitude.

"Fatty fingers" is inferring that the person waving the finger has also held his fair share of blunts.

With "Liar, lawyer..." he's saying that one is a mirror image of the other. As in - they're the same thing.

A lot of of people have suggested "out of your hair," but that doesn't rhyme with "raise the dead" now does it?

No one should have to be told the stuff about "muddy waters" refers to bullshit. If that's not clear to you I'd suggest checking out a reading comprehension class or two.

Now... all that said, here's my take (with big thanks to the guy who said he heard "lemon juice" because that makes sense with the inference that the indigo tears are fake tears.):

____________

Who are you to wave your finger?
You must have been out your head
Eye hole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been

Foot in mouth and head up asshole
What ya talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'til you pull it out, boy

You must have been so high
You must have been so high

Steal, borrrow -- reefer save your shady inference
Kangaroo done hung no juror with the innocent

Now you're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye

When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high
You must have been high, high

Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer -- mirror show me
What's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent

NOW
You're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your high eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind

Weeping shades of indigo
Shed without a reason
Weeping shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer
Mirror for you what's the difference
Kangaroo be stoned
He's guilty -- ask the government

NOW
You're weeping shades of chosen indigo

Kangaroo?????

The first time this comes up, it's

Kangaroo'ed and hung the jury

Later, it comes up again and is

Kangaroo'ed among the guilty

finally, it is used a third time

Kangaroo'ed and stoned the guilty

it's a reference to a Kangaroo Court

DEFINITION: A kangaroo court (also known as a kangaroo trial or a Drumhead trial) is a sham legal proceeding or court, often judged subjectively through the speaker's perspective. It may be a court that has had its integrity compromised, i.e., the impartiality of the judge who refuses to be recused, or an elaborately scripted event intended to appear fair while having the outcome predetermined from the start.

edit: just saw someone got to fixing it before me. good work.

...

"out OF your head," Maynard!!

The more I hear this song, the more I hear IN this song.

Not only is it a condemnation of hypocrisy in the legal system or the hypocrisy of the whole war on drugs, it's also a condemnation of America's "War on Terror" and can tie into a lot of current U.S. policy. Maynard very delicately weaves a dense tapestry of hate here, and I'm sure there's even more to it than I can see now.

Something that struck me when I first heard the intro, however, slipped to the back of my mind but has come back to my attention with some of the other posts here.

The song starts out with just Maynard - and yeah, he sounds funny, like he's sped up or has lots of effects, but that's only taking it at face value like a lot of folks posting here are doing.

I don't think there are any real "effects" on the vocal there other than the backwards echo. The vocal track actually seems to have been comped together from different takes -- lots of different takes. Every word sounds edited with bad splices, which is why the beginnings and ends of words are all fucked up.

This, coupled with Maynard's phrasing -- leaving the "g" of of words which end in "ing," slamming syllables together like "outchyer" instead of "out of your" -- all of that turns this song into a condemnation of the current trends in pop and rock music. He's condemning educated people who talk like street punks and assume a fake personality to sell records. He's saying to all of the bands out there to play it for real and don't fucking assemble it in Pro Tools. I feel he's directing this at the bands who autotune and manipulate every beat of every song in Pro Tools until it lines up perfectly along a grid - yet they claim to their fans that they just went in and recorded it live but anyone with a pair of ears can hear it's just not true.

I love this song. I love how much hate -- intelligent, well thought out hate -- is packed into just this one track. It completely blows me away.

______________

As for the accuracy of my transcription, I stand by what I posted. I was pretty accurate when I posted my transcription for "Message to Harry Manback" back in the day, and I don't even speak Italian. This one is much easier to make out.

I doubt they'll give us the lyrics in the CD but they're bound to come around in some official form sooner or later.

It's..
You must have been out of your hair

Because if it's not then maynard makes his d's sound like r's therefore he needs some help with pro-noun-see-ation. And maynard doesn't always rhyme. He doesn't rhyme a lot of the time. But it doesn't have to rhyme...

the shape of the mouth when making "r" and "d" sounds is very similar.. and although maynard has an incredible range, this is right near the top, which any singer can tell you sometimes requires some weird maxillofacial contortions to acheive with good timbre..
i just don't think the line is "out your hair.." it does sound similar, but my reason won't let me accept that..

but that's not why i'm posting, i just wanted to point that out..

the real reason for my post, and i apologize if someone has made this correction already, is that i see this line transcribed mistakenly in the past 2 or 3 versions:
it's not "reefer save your" or anything to that effect.. it's "steal/borrow, reaper/savior, shady inference".. goes along with the "liar/lawyer...what's the difference" lines

this song is about the fabricated evidence used to start the war in iraq.

my evidence is the joni mitchell war protest song that starts it out

A Kangaroo Court is one which has no real authority and just comes up with decisions regardless of evidence or justice. A hung jury can't decide either way.

I haven't heard this song, but I figured Vicarious was about watching war on TV. so that fit a little...

It's definitely "bestowed", I actually came here to post it. Good find because I couldnt think what came after that and "He's guilty" makes a lot of sense. But I don't like voyeur in there. Okay, after listening to it through a bunch of times, this is what I feel to be correct. My first observation being that he DEFINITELY says:

"Steal/barrow, REAPER SAVE YOUR shady inference."

I thought it was almost too obvious. I think most of you are hanging too much on his references to pot. When listeing, I tried not to become lost in the idea of it being primarily about smoking pot or being high. The line also makes sense if interpreted as I have done. Also, I'm not positive but the line:

"Foot in mouth and head up ass SO,"

is also correct based on:

"Soapbox house of cards and glass SO
Don't go tossin' your stones around."

It just seems to follow suit. Uniformity among what seems like chaos and characteristic of Maynard's writing style.

Ganja police...It does actually sound like he says that. I'll give you that, BUT there is no way he's actually saying that...again, a forced assumption based references to being high and the title of the song. Moving on.

"Kangaroo be stoned
He's guilty as the government."

A very bold statement from Maynard. Again, right down his alley. The kangaroo court is as full of shit as our government. I don't buy it. He doesn't buy it either.

Another argument I have with popular belief is that he does not say, "fatty fingers." I am fairly sure he says either "mighty" or "many." If I didn't all-of-a-sudden have an overbearing urge to listen to "10,000 Days," I would have continued listening to that part until I have a diffinitive answer, but I don't even know if I would have obtained one. Until Maynard decided to let us in on his many secrets, I'll probably use both, depending on my mood.

I think that the only other thing, if I haven't missed anything along the way, that I still debate is "eyeballs," "eyeholes," "elbows," "your balls," and any other variation of the lyric that is currently circulating. There is a good posibility that he may use any combination of these throughout the song, possibly even, in pairs.

For instance:
Eye holes ->>> eyeballs.

If there are eye holes and you are looking through them, you are a fuckin' hypocrit as he, I believe, states in the first few minutes of the song. But, like I stated above, I am not sure that there is any truth to the other variations. Our imagination and desire to make sense of the madness that is Maynard leads us down many avenues where we lose sight of the point, which we replace with our own, one more suiting of our own needs (I guess).

I will not claim that my lyrics are 99.99% correct. I truly have no idea how accurate my interpretation is. I'll let you guys decide.

The only thing I DO KNOW for sure is that it is incredibly well writen as is everything else on this record.

they sound exactly the same, but i think contextually reaper/savior makes more sense.

i think it makes more sense (of course since it was my interpretation) as "steal/borrow, reaper/savior, shady inference"

they sound exactly the same, but i think contextually reaper/savior makes more sense.

I agree that it does sound like he says reaper/savior, and there is a good chance he does. But, I still stand by original statement which makes as much sense as yours. He's telling the reaper, the government to call it what he wishes (steal or borrow) and that either way, it's a shady inference.

Who are you to wave your finger?
You must have been out your head
Eye hole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been

Foot in mouth and head up asshole
What ya talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'til you pull it out, boy

You must have been so high
You must have been so high

Steal, borrrow -- reaper save your shady inference ( this part could be, reaper/saviour, shady inference, inference relating to the gathering of information and drawing a conclusion based on said information. I feel that save your shady inference fits more closely)
Kangaroo done hung no juror with the innocent

Now you're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye

When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high
You must have been high, high

Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer -- mirror show me
What's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent

NOW
You're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your high eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind

Weeping shades of indigo
Shed without a reason
Weeping shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer
Mirror for you what's the difference
Kangaroo be stoned
He's guilty -- ask the government

NOW
You're weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye
EYE

Now when you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been high, high, high, high
Eyeballs deep in bloody waters
Your balls deep in muddy waters

Ganja police you must have been out your mind ( I think Maynard is refering to hypocrism in the judicial system by calling out the Ganja police...police that break all the same laws as "normal" citizens and even steal from the citizens to feed their habit, and this can be taken to many layers of meaning)

As far as my ears can tell this is 100 %. It is composed of everyones ideas on here, I just listened with each idea in mind and found the ones that fit best. Maynard coul d have purposely spoken certain phrases oddly so that people would fill in the blanks for themselves and make their own meanings

I had originally tried to figure out the lyrics by myself using the time as a way to help me know where I’m at in the song. Of course, at first my lyrics were way off, but I kept up to date on this thread and tried to incorporate all previous thoughts and debatable parts into this set of lyrics. I think there are only eleven parts that people are still disagreeing on and I’ve pointed them out and numbered them above.

My interpretation of these iffy parts is as follows:
1. Head
2. Eye Hole
3. Snow
4. So
5. Save your
6,7,&8 (I haven’t found any other parts that sound like they fit but I’m still not 100% sure on what I have)
9. Mighty
10. For ya
11. Catch up with lies

So we should focus on these parts until we agree on them (or until the official lyrics are released).

Yeah, I bough a home theater for this album, and when I used to listen to my crappy 2.0 (no sub) system I too thought it was "head"... but with the new system, it really DOES sound like "hair"... which I thought it was a bit weird, but hell... it sounds like hair

ARGH!!!!! I feel like I am going nuts. YOU MUSTA BEEN OUT YOUR HAIR!!!!!

Yeah, I hear "hair" also. However, I'm not sure enough to say that it isn't intended to be "head" which is suggested by the lyrics in the rest of the song. When I first heard it, I thought it said "head" and I had to listen carefully to notice that the "d" sound is left off. So I'm undecided on this technicality until the official lyrics are released.

But what about the other iffy parts that I listed three posts up?

the way the meleody is sung in parts reminds me of led zepelin - 'high' bits

also, theres no WAY he says" weeping shades of indigo" at any stage as it makes no logical sense whatsoever :) and the lemon juice bit too - makes no sense to me unless i'm missing something - and it sounds like word that people think is 'chosen' CANT be because its a Kicking K sound, not a soft Ch sound when he sings it - EVERY TIME!

this is my honest attempt
theres only a small part i cant decipher and its that "weeping shades of indigo...... and lemon juice" bit - it makes no sense, i will honestly eat all my words if they're the right lyrics!

Starting eating, bud. They make complete sense. First, let us take a look at the word 'indigo':

"Indigo is the color of the deep midnight sky. It can have a negative effect when used during a depressed state, because it will deepen the mood. Indigo symbolizes a mystical borderland of wisdom, self-mastery and spiritual realization. While blue is the color of communication with others, indigo turns the blue inward, to increase personal thought, profound insights, and instant understandings. While blue can be fast, Indigo is almost instantaneous. Inventors use indigo skills for inspirations that seem to 'come out of the blue." - http://www.crystal-cure.com/indigo.html

A color that isn't chosen for the sake of flow or from a hat.

So, if we then tack on the line, "Go lemon juice up in your eye," it all comes together. Very basic and fits with the song, contextually, quite nicely. Mystery solved (unlike that which plagues us monkeys). Now I'm off to beat down my roommate with a club. :)

Bush putting completely unqualified people in positions of power because they are his "buddies" or even his daddy's "buddies" comes to mind when I hear this line.

after spending the last three days deciphering the lyrics, with A LOT of help from the posts here, here are my humble opinions.

1. I dont see any drug references in this song, so reefer and ganja police, really dont make sense. reefer = reaper; ganja police = caught up in lies
2. kangaroo be stoned and guilty as the government
3. taking into account the other references of a savior on this album, i think its... savior, though of course it could be a double meaning with save your, that never happens in tool songs.
4. weeping shades of chosen indigo
got lemon juice up in yer eye
5. head makes sense boys and girls, but he says hair, i dont know why, ask him.
6. ketchup with fries lmao... catch up with lies.
7. last but certainly not least, i here cause, not cards, which makes sense... to me

please dont all jump at once

i already posted about the fatty fingers

HE SAYS HAIR NOT HEAD!!

If you're right, then he also says, "You practically raised the dare" at the end of that stanza because:

1. The rhyming pattern is very well established.
2. The ends of the words on those lines are the same.

To use your tactics:

THE "D" AT THE END OF HEAD IS SOFT!!

Kinda like the D in the middle of "de nada."

He's holding out the vowel (which is the only part you can sing of ANY word) and the D is barely there. Just like on almost all of the other words in that intro section.

But it is there. Trust me. If you don't hear it you need to get a better way to monitor your music.

Three things:

He varies many small nearly repeating parts of the song, what is right at one point is often being shot down by someone else who hears a similiar section of the song.

I advise paying attention to the cadence of his Words, sometimes more than the phonetics on this song. Blame the recording, the nature of singing (falsetto) or blame Maynard for singing falsely. Certainly I care more about the energy/quality of his singing than whether his recorded sung enunciation is perfectly audible.

--Meanwhile why not brainstorm what we think wheepin 'shades of indigo' part might be during the the verses -- It fits believably, and better than other suggestions, at 4:12, and possibly on some verses.
However:
5:22 NOW your witnesses have chosen not to fold
5:27 leaving your self and your eye, eye.

To me this is a song about Hypocrisy

The complete title of this song is:
"The Pot" calling the kettle black. (ie hypocrisy) (this is a saying in the Netherlands, i dont know if it is one in the US as well)

To me its about the justifications used to wage war in the middle east.

In movies if you want to create tears dont they use some lemon juice drops to make teh eyes water?

Oh and doesnt he say Kangeroo dung? If you want to erase traces you snow a lot of shit over it so that the dogs wont be able to follow you anymore.

Do yourself a favor. Go search for the following word combinations (most of which are common sayings):

1. Blue tears
2. House of cards
3. People who throw stones should not live in glass houses.
4. Standing on a soapbox

There are lines on this album which can easily be disputed - like the one people think says "So they took me by the hand" in Rosetta Stoned, but the ones you are pointing out here are just so blatantly obvious I can't understand how you could be unsure of them.

And that includes the last line of the song. There is most certainly a long "e" sound on the 4th syllable. My take on that was initially "Ganja Police" and it still is after many repeated listenings. Nothing else which has been suggested even comes close. Not "Ganja? Puh-lease" and most certainly not "Catch up with lies."

Use your head - which you first have to allow to be open and not marred by what you first heard there - then think about how the words fit the context of the song.

But then again, you could be one of the people who think Jimi Hendrix says,

" 'scuse me, while I kiss this guy."

GOT LEMON JUICE UP IN YOUR EYE
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been!

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your MIGHTY fingers at me?
You must, have been, out your, mind!

Reefer chased off indigo
Trapped without a reason
Reefer chased off indigo

Liar, lawyer,

What's the difference?
King Guru be stoned
He's guilty as the government

NOW
Will you weep or CHANGE THE CHOSEN INTO GOLD

YOU'RE balls deep in muddy waters

Who are you to wave your finger?
Ya' must have been out your head
EYE HOLE deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave, to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox,house of cards,and glass
So don't go tossin' your stones around

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been

Foot in mouth, and head up ASS
SO WHATCHA talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'til you pull it out, boy!

You must have been, so high
You must have been, so high

Steal, borrow, refer, save your shady inference
KING GURU done hung the juror with the innocent

Now will you weep or, CHANGE THE CHOSEN INTO GOLD
GOT LEMON JUICE UP IN YOUR EYE

When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high
You must have been high, high
Who are you to wave your finger? So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer, mirror, show me
What's the difference?
KING GURU done hung the guilty with the innocent

I combined the last two sets of complete lyrics that were posted. Hopefully this brings them together and makes the lyrics even more accurate.

THE POT

Who are you to wave your finger
You must’ve been out your head
Eyehole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don’t go tossin’ your stones around

You must’ve been high
You must’ve been high
You must’ve been

Foot in mouth and head up ass
So whatcha talkin ‘bout
Difficult to dance ‘round this one

You must’ve been so high
You must’ve been so high

Steal, borrow reefer
Save your shady inference
Kangaroo done hung the juror
With the innocent
Now, you’re weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got a lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must’ve been high, high
You must’ve been high, high

Who are you to wave your finger
So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Fuckin hypocrite
Liar, lawyer, mirror show me
What’s the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty
With the innocent
Now, you’re weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got a lemon juice up in your high eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must’ve been…

So who are you to wave your finger
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me
You must have been out of your mind

Weeping shades of indigo
Trapped without a reason
Weeping shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer, mirror for ya

Kangaroo, he’s stoned
He’s guilty, ask the government
Now, you’re weeping shades of chosen indigo
Got a lemon juice up in your eye, eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must’ve been high, high, high, high
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Your balls deep in muddy waters
Ganja Police! You must have been out your mind!!

I think that last post is the closest so far definitely, the only parts that i am still not 100% on is the ganja police.... "Can't drop all lies!" or something like that. I really don't know what he is saying but ganja police just, in my mind doesn't fit. Just based on the message of the song. I know i am mentally retarded though. It could be somthing else or ganja police could be right, but as i stated i really don't think so.

I really liked the idea of "Ganja Police" because it made me laugh my ass off. LOL.

But the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like "Ganja? Please!" It sounds like he is saying "Puh-lease" - in a way that means "You must be joking." You can definitely hear the 'G' in Ganja. I'm pretty sure it is Ganja something. Ganja Police seems a bit too off the wall. But it is hilarious.

I'm going with "Ganja? Puh-lease! You must have been out your mind!"

It's hair. Whether he means head or hair, it is in fact hair. He may have meant head, it does ryhme with dead, but it is hair. The D does not exist. It makes sense as someone has already said, you get high and you wig out. I wanted it to be head. I wanted it to ryhme, but it just is not head.

Who here pronounces police - Pole-eyes? It's not police, and it's not ganja police. I think it's a matter of you putting something in which simply is not there just because you smoke the ganja.

I'm still not convinced its "catch up with lies" but that's what it sounds like. It does not sound like ganja police.

Rob the grave to snow the cradle - I believe this is referring to using dead voters to win the presidency so this admin can then bullshit the younger generation who was not yet indoctrinated into the lies. There are actually people who think global warming is a lie. Jeez.

You're balls/both deep in muddy waters - (both could refer to Bush and Saddam, cause face it, Saddam is a fuckhead. Bush is too, but Saddam is as well, hence the pot calling the kettle black)

I just wish we weren't lied to all the time by our government. It makes it impossible to trust them without just throwing reason out the window. "I believe Bush cause he's a born again christian like me." Oh the rationale. Or worse but understandable, "I believe because to not believe is to face a reality to complicated and dark for me to deal with." I hate what politics is, but I try to find it amusing. </soapbox>

Of course it's head, good grief, just because he doesn't pronounce it "hedd" doesn't mean it's anything but 'head'.
The phrase "get out of my hair" is saying "go away, you're annoying me", the phrase "get out of my head" means "I am going to be not thinking rationally".

"You must have been out of your hair" would mean "you must have stopped annoying yourself", which whilst it would make sense, doesn't when you think of the context of the song.
"You must have been out of your head" would mean "You must have stopped thinking rationally". In other words, "For you to be accusing me of something that you yourself have done, you must have stopped thinking rationally."

There are some other lines I might have a different interpretation to compared to the ones posted but I went past The Pot, am listening to Rosetta Stoned and am loathe to stop and go back :D.

The line sounds to me like:

"Now you WEEP in shades of chosen indigo"

NoVestal

It doesn't matter if it ryhmes. What matters is what the actual lyric on the album is.

I understand that it makes sense as "head" and he may say it in concert but I've listened closely to the album and cannot hear a "d" sound, but CAN hear an "r" sound. I don't care if he meant "head", the word that is communicated through the pronunciation on the album is "Hair."

He clearly could have said "head" if he wanted to because in the next line he says "dead" as you guys have pointed out. He's not having difficulty with pronunciation, he is simply saying "hair." This is so obvious that I cannot believe you guys do not see.

This has become a kangaroo court. You've decided what to believe without evidence to support it.

moneyisevil has the best argument (if he's right about the bootleg) but it still does not apply to what was said on the album. I've heard Maynard say many times that some of the songs change from performance to performance.

Foot in mouth and head up asshole, whatcha talkin bout?

Yeah..I know...not many posts...because I generally don't even like offering an opinion in forums...Mostly due to the fact that I get slammed by childish zen-wannabes who believe *in their existence* anyways that I am below them and needs be taught in their ways.
First off...wanna comment on the Coachella bootleg..which..by the way..I haven't even heard. But I saw someone up there say something like "after this bootleg" it's definately head. I dunno how long you've been a tool fan....but Maynard sings similar yet different lyrics during performances. On the CD though..it's Hair..at the beginning anyways.
As for the main reason I decided to post. The last kangaroo reference.. I got beat to it earlier. But what I'm hearing...and what is most likely the line there...is "Kangaroo Bestow THESE Guilty AS The Government". As in the Kangaroo court is Bestowing a verdict of Guilty on the Defendant AS though it were the government...though in reality it is not...it is a mere mockery of a Government..EH?!?!?! EH?!?!?! As in OUR CURRENT government...being a mockery of what a gov. should be. Just my two cents...go 'head (or hair) rip me a new asshole...I really don't care...I probably won't be back to see the replies...because it's just gonna be someone telling me how I'm wrong about "bestow" and "as". But listen. No...again. Nope..one more time...Now...spiral out....

P.S.-I find it Fucking HILARIOUS that Maynard still manages to provoke so much trivial debate over his lyrics...just by singing in a way that can be interpreted many many different ways...just like their songs. We all draw our own personal attachment to them. And NONE of them are right...not even mine. Therein lies the point all along....
Now..run along and seperate your bodies from your minds...

IMHO...

It's a heavily aspirated 'head'.

1st one is eyeHOLE deep in muddy water = head so far up your ass it's in shit (can we swear in here?)

'Now you're weepin' chosen shades of iindigo' sounds good, and if it's right, I think there'll be more than one meaning to the sentence (cf. the whole '11' thing in jimmy: 11's the age of a small boy (James of MJK = jimmy), 1+1=1, 11:11 and lightwaters/workers and storing as much light as you can, etc)

But, I ask you ladies and gentlemen, what is the meaning of that sentence?

'Weepin' chosen shades' might mean choosing the tears shown (you cry when you're blue/indigo), but because they're chosen they're fake tears (like crocodile tears)?

Working on the premise that there's often more than one level of meaning to lyrics, I googled 'gold and indigo' and stumbled on an article called "When music turns from rapt gold and indigo to blood red", and it talks about music having colours. the last line of the article is:

"Crucially, Jansons maintained concentration across all four movements' the third of which was shaded in rapt gold and indigo, the fourth blood red."

Unlikely that we have our missing metaphor, however, does this ring bells with anyone?

Like I said, grist for the mill, and I'm sure eventually either someone will stumble upon a decent set of lyrics or meaning, or the lyrics will be released to TDN and our HEADaches will all be over.

Sorry.

Speaking of context, I think the end is "Ganja Puh-leeze!" Just cuz it flows with the next line.

MATE - think about it, "you musta been out your hair" just makes no sense in context - or in fact EVER!

if it really is that, what do you think being "out ya HAIR" actually means cuz i'm DYING to know!

He doesn't pronounce the last d on dead either but nobody seems to be screaming about him singing "You practically raised the dare!"

the chosen indigo bit is driving me NUTS!

something tells me the pronuncuation is wrong

surely, an american accent such as Maynards would pronounce it

In-di-go or In-DuH-go

rather than

in-deee-gyoh

just a thought!

that then got me onto thinking, what on earth ELSE sounds like that pronuncation!!!??

............ i have no idea other than i swear its not Weeping Chosen Shades of Indigo! (the Ch sound on Chosen sounds too much like a Kicking K, Kuh sound or even an Tuh sound)

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - someone give me maynard's number, i'll just call him and ask!

Why do you think maynard HAS TO rhyme here?!

heres a verse off track 4

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rise to the height of our halo

yea hero and halo rhyme---but romanticize and overrun dont really rhyme too much...

I didn't say he had to, but he does, it's head and dead.

He doesn't pronounce the last d on dead, go listen, does that mean he's saying dare?

I can't fucking wait for the lyrics to come out so this is settled.

It sounds like "Steal, borrow reefer for your shady friends," to me, I'm probably wrong though, this is one I can't get.

Oh and, I'm sure it's "chosen interval."

Ive noticed with the weird

now your weeping shades of indigo
got lemon juice up in your eye

bits actually change each time he sings it - i think he sings it 3 times within the song, each time it sounds different, especially the last time round, near the end of the song

it sounds like he says

now you wait and change your chosen interval!

No, I buy pot with indigo hairs. (I think indigo is closer to purple than blue. Ever hear of Purple Haze?)

Fair enough, but I still don't think it says "reefer" anywhere in this song.

I totally agree with "Steal, borrow, reap, or save your shady inference" and "weep in shades of ______ indigo"

Ok i didn't do this, i found this on another site and they say these are the lyrics for the song i don't know if i believe it or not

Who are you to wave your finger?
You must have been out your head
Eye hole deep in muddy waters
You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around

You must have been high
You must have been high
You must have been

Foot in mouth and head up asshole
What you talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'til you pull it out, boy

You must have been so high
You must have been so high

Steel, borrow, reefer save your shady inference
Kangaroo done hung no juror with the innocent

Now you weep and chase the chosen indigo
get lemon juice up in your eye

When you pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been high, high
You must have been high, high

Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer -- mirror show me
What's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent

NOW
you weep and chase the chosen indigo
get lemon juice up in your eye
EYE
When you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind

Weakend shades of indigo
trapped without a reason
weakend shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer, mirror
For you what's the difference
Kangaroo be stoned
He's guilty as the government

NOW
you weep and chase the chosen indigo
get lemon juice up in your eye
EYE

Now when you pissed all over my black kettle
You musta been high, high, high, high
Eyeballs deep in bloody waters
Eyeballs deep in muddy waters

Ganja please!!!

You must have been out your mind

I agree with everythign in the post above except:

Weeping shades of indigo
Were shed within a reason
Oh, weeping shades of indigo

first:
steal/borrow, reaper/savior, shady inference

i swear to you, these are the lyrics.

second:
Why do you think maynard HAS TO rhyme here?!

heres a verse off track 4

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rise to the height of our halo

yea hero and halo rhyme---but romanticize and overrun dont really rhyme too much...

that verse fits the ABCB rhyme scheme, as does this verse, if you use the word head.

A: Who are you to wave your finger?
B: you musta been out yo' head
C: eyehole-deep in muddy water
B: you practically raised the dead.

and the ABCB rhyme scheme is used throughout the whole song.

so the word is "head."

but maybe still

i think it's just the way he pronounces his d's at the end

awesome. even better. anyone (aussies in particular? lol) know why he uses the word kangaroo?

A kangaroo COURT or kangaroo trial, also known as drumhead court-martial (or a Drumhead trial), is a sham legal proceeding or COURT. The term is often applied to COURTs subjectively judged as such, while others consider the court to be legitimate and legal. A kangaroo COURT may be a COURT that has had its integrity compromised; for example, if the judge is not impartial and refuses to be recused. It may also be an elaborately scripted event intended to appear fair while having the outcome predetermined from the start.

'eyeballs deep in muddy waters, fuckin hypocrite'

I like to think hes saying

'I hold deep in muddy waters a fuckin' immigrant'

gives more dimensions to 'the pot'... i don't care if its right or wrong. And that scream that follows right after that line, I visualize Maynard drowning an old chinese woman in a lake. hm..?

I don't think they say "kangaroo" once in the song. I think it's "king the rude". Ya'll should get your ears checked.

i always thought phosphorescent desert buttons was a reference to peyote cactii.. i mean, they're not phosphorescent, but they do grow in the desert and are called "buttons"..

and maybe if you're *on* peyote, they *are* phosphorescent.

i bet there are probably 20 threads about this discussion in the "third eye" forum, but i'm too lazy to check. :P

i may not have read every single post to this topic, but I have been listening to this album pretty steadily for a few weeks. That bein said, has anyone thought that maybe this 'chosen indigo' could mean our strapping, courageous boys in blue? I'm having a hard time with the whole 'weep' thing. I don't know, I've read all the different lyrics posted here, but I really like THIS song, and what's posted here doesn't all seem to fit yet with what I hear. I've certainly read everything that I DO think I hear here. But, really, cops? anyone?

change the "f" to a "p" and conjoin "save your" into "savior" and you've got it.
