listen to the tales and romanticize,
how we follow the path of the hero
boast about the day when the rivers overun
how we rised to the height of our halo

listen to the tales as we all rationalize
our way into the arms of a savior,
fading all the trials and the tribulations,
none of us have actually been there,
not like you,

ignorant fibbers in the congregation,
gather around spewing sympathy,
spare me,
none of them can even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hippocrites wont seek,

but nothing but the ? of judas,
who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
youll have a piece of the divine,

this little light of mine, it gives your past unto me,
ill let it shine,
to guide you safely on your way,
your way home

ohh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
without you guide them home to zion

what are they going to do when the river is overrun
other than tremble incessantly,

high as a wave but ill rise on up off/on the ground

You are the light and the wave, they've only read about

i only pray, god only knows when to lift you out?

10000 days in the fire is long enough, your going home.

your the only one who can hold your head up high,
shake your fist at the gates saying,
"i have come home now,
fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. its time now, my time now,
give me my, give me my, wings"

give me my x5
give me my wings

heyyyyyyyyyhooooooooooooooooooooo
You are the light and the wave, they've only read about

set/said as i am in my wings and my arrogance,
burnin all through tossed upon the believers

you were my witness,
my eyes, my evidence,
judith marie, unconditional one

daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence, difficult to see you in this light,
please forgive this, bold suggestion, should you see your maker's face tonight,
look em in the eye, look em in the eye, and tell them, i never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one, hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

"while your safely on your way" seems to be: "To guide you safely on your way"

And also:

"you are light, a wave, that they will only read about" is: "You are the light and the wave, they've only read about."

I know, it has to be the most personal song MJK has ever wrote. I imagine he cried when he heard it. I did. It's a great song for anybody who has a loved one in pain.
I'm Speechless also. Those are brilliant lyrics. When a loved one dies of mine (Hopefully not for a long time) this will be what i dedicate to them.

I know I'll be crying when I hear this live... hope Maynard decides to do it.... it probably will happen.... they're the type to completely bare their souls to the audience and it'll bring everyone closer together. I've always come very close to crying (such as hearing "Disposition" or the origins for "Wings") while seeing them live.... but somehow I know I'll be bawling when they play this song.

BEST TOOL SONG EVER.

jesus, i feel stupid, im crying plenty right now. this pair of songs REALLY hit home for me in a really difficult way... my father died in november after about 14 years of serious depression, extreme alcoholism, inabilty to work, and 3 years before he died, he got in a terrible accident, and never recovered enough to even walk decently again... this one means a hell of a lot to me... it's almost like it's kind of making me face it for the first time, in a different way...

Although it's a total different context, this song reminds me of the battle my father fought when he was dying of lungcancer ...

I'm not american or english, so i didn't understand the lyrics very good when i heard it the first time ... but reading them and listening to the song again just made me burst into tears.

Shit, I keep listening to this song over and over and over and OVER AND OVER again and I just cry that much harder... I was one of those people who thought "no way could they top Lateralus" but I was sorely mistaken. I would've been completely satisfied if they only released these two songs and nothing else.

Thanks a lot for making me cry, guys! I was stoked enough to hear this piece of music evolve from the Lalteralus tour... but now you've gone and made the song about a million times more meaningful. =P

this song obviously deals with the issue of loss, which some feel more deeply than others. There is no room for that kind of rhetoric here.

I haven't heard it, or the new album yet, but this line:

"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one."

Made my stomach sink. esp. in tandem with this one:

"This little light of mine it gives your past unto me, I'll let it shine, To guide you safely on your way, Your way home..."

PS. I cry.

Oh, and also, just incase anybody gets all up in arms about the father/son/spirit thing as if it means maynard is religious, or a christian (*shudders*) just know that this ancient holy trinity originated in pagan myth, which was robbed of its identity by the christian religion. my take, LUCIFER is our Father, who has a son, and the spirit is the soul through IT that we all share.

FistFck
04-19-2006, 04:34 AM
i think someone else posted this before about references to christianity. frankly i dont really care if maynard had referenced it, but seeing as how this is a tribute to his mother, i think people shouldnt really step on the song for having christian references seeing as how maynard obviously including things that he felt were significant to her, and his relationship with her.

someone and myself were PMing each other about this and the first part of this track and he made the statement that I think needs to be here, because it's a VERY good point:

I really enjoy how the theme in Judith is that according to his Mother, since God is all powerful, he had the power to cause your stroke, so he must have done it to you... its a negative side to her religion... but in Wings for Marie it shows how he has thought the concept through a little more, and that although God may have caused her stroke, she has proven herself through love and faith to be worthy of entering Zion.. its as if he is completely examining the double edge sword of her belief... although she lost her legs (which he saw as intially bad) she has eternity of peace (which he now sees as the reason for her continued faith and recognizes how this made her such a great individual).

really its just an amazing song by itself, but juxtaposed with Judith and its an epic song of personal growth and understanding.

When I heard the song it's power immediately hit me but I had no clue what it was about. My train of thought started going the Paradise Lost way for some reason (it may sound crazy but for me it fit especially considering I couldn't understand key lyrics), but now that I've actually read the lyrics they're so bloody gorgeous I can see why they hit me the way they did. Unbelievable. Has to be one of my all time favourite lyrics.

it could be Judas though, Judas... Judith... so close.

EDIT: After listening more closely, I hear the whole line as "But enough about the collective Judas" this makes more sense in terms of the line before it... speaking of the "fibbers in the congregation..."

Quoting myself because I hear this REALLY clearly

too many syllables to just be "god"

I'm hearing either "Allah" or "heaven" - and given the context, I'd suggest that it's "heaven"

"Set as I am in my wings and my arrogance"
Shouldn't that be
"Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance"
as in the common saying "set in my ways"?

Yep, Definately

The "nothing but..." line to me sounds like it starts off "But enough about the..."

Yep, I think so. Other than that...seems pretty good.

i too lost my mother last year of a re-growth of cancer after she battled breast cancer 5 years ago. she lived for 10 months fighting for her life through various stages of mobility, and at one point fought it off to the point where she could walk , 4 months after we were told she would die in the night. Writing this and listening to the song brings tears to my eyes and this expresses many things about my feeling towards my mother that i could not. a very special piece of art.

listen to the tales and romanticize,
how we follow the path of the hero
boast about the day when the rivers overun
how we rised to the height of our halo

listen to the tales as we all rationalize
our way into the arms of a savior,
fading all the trials and the tribulations,
none of us have actually been there,
not like you,

ignorant fibbers in the congregation,
gather around spewing sympathy,
spare me,
none of them can even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hippocrites wont seek,

but nothing but the ? of judas,
who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
youll have a piece of the divine,

this little light of mine, it gives your past unto me,
ill let it shine,
to guide you safely on your way,
your way home

ohh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
without you guide them home to zion

what are they going to do when the river is overrun
other than tremble incessantly,

high as a wave but ill rise on up off/on the ground

You are the light and the wave, they've only read about

i only pray, god only knows when to lift you out?

10000 days in the fire is long enough, your going home.

your the only one who can hold your head up high,
shake your fist at the gates saying,
"i have come home now,
fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. its time now, my time now,
give me my, give me my, wings"

daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence, difficult to see you in this light,
please forgive this, bold suggestion, should you see your maker's face tonight,

instead of
"listen to the tales as we all rationalize
our way into the arms of a savior"

imagine:
listen to the tales as we all ratio out lies
our way into the arms of a savior

this makes sense if you think like a jahova's witness

also,
"this little light of mine, it gives your past unto me,
ill let it shine,
to guide you safely on your way,
your way home"

i think that my version makes more sense...
the "light" is the gift of god, or the gift of jesus...
"i wont let it shine but guide you safely on your way home.."
makes sense if you consider that his followers pretty much layed down and let him be crucified.

correction for this verse:

but nothing but the ? of judas,
who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
youll have a piece of the divine,

he's saying 'collect' as in "the collect of judas". it's a religious term:

(KOLL-ekt) A concisely written prayer that "collects" the prayers of the people. The Collect of the Day is prayed toward the beginning of the Divine Service, prior to the reading of Holy Scripture. The collect usually follows a pattern of: address to God, basis for the prayer, petition, desired benefit or result, and Trinitarian termination.

he's saying that the minister that these people pray with is Judas, hence they are all liar and betrayers like Judas and hence they fit right in with him.

In the gospels (john in particular) jesus gives himself many names. "the light" (example John 8:12), "The life" and "the way" (example: John 14:6 ) are some of them. "The wave" is not one. no one reads about jesus "the wave" (except perhaps some weird sect of surfer christians). lets agree not to include this in the list of possibilities from now on as it makes no sense (annoyingly so).

John aside, my money is on "you were the light and the way that they only read about." this is based on what i'm hearing and the knowledge that "the truth, the light, and the way" is a popular mis-reading of john and is often used by preachy types (annoyingly so).

good point..

id been led in the direction of wave because i think of light in a scientific and not spiritual way...which led me to wave (sound travelling as a wave)

Corrections: "feigning" instead of "failing,"-- not only does it sound more correct, it just is more correct within context-- "incessantly" definitely instead of "in symphony." Definitely "collective Judas," not "collector" or "Judith." I think it's probably, "illuminated ... you are a piece of the Divine," but I'm not sure.

DEFINITELY "Light and the Way (not wave) they'll only read about"-- because Jesus was called "the Way, the Truth, and the Light." The church, sort of, was called "The Pillar of Faith" in 2 Timothy. I definitely like "burden of proof tossed upon the believers."

Beautiful lyrics.

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rise to the height of our halo

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior
Failing all the trials and the tribulations
None of us have actually been there
Not like you

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choices hypocrites won't see

But enough about the collective Judas
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated you're a piece of the divine.

Ohhhh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly

High is the way, but our lives are up on the ground
You are the light and the way, they only read about
I only pray heaven knows when to put you out
Ten thousand days as the fire is long enough
You're going home

You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
I have come home now
Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my wings

I'm hearing "I only pray Allah knows when to lift you out" - as in Allah being one of the names that God is known by. Not the correct name, according to his mother's religion, but it's a real name for the figure, and it fits better than Heaven, Jehovah or Yaweh.

I also hear "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof thrown upon the believers"
Why would Maynard be "safe" in his ways? Nobody but his mother (according to him) is safe in their ways. He's recognising that he is set in his ways and beliefs, and he is always throwing the burden of proof onto the believers in his lyrics. He doesn't need to place it on the unbelievers, because that's where it is for the most part anyway.

I'm also not hearing "Collective Judas" but something more along the lines of "collective Julius" - but I'm not entirely sure how that fits into things yet, so I'm just throwing that out there. Something with a soft J and an L sound.

I definitely hear "...Alllah knows when to lift you out," and, while I'd be open to the possibility that it's something else, even when trying my best to hear "God" or "Heaven" there I constantly fail. It sounds nothing like "God" and you'd be stretching to get a v in there, let alone no l's. This has come up a few times in this thread; it's a pretty big thing, I think, and I wonder why so few are addressing it.

Consider the context about wings, gates, coming home from the fire...

Let's get serious here...

Yes, but Allah is a legitimate name of god.. Maynard is likely taking a bit of artistic license, like the way he is with the line "ten thousand days in the fire..." - his mother was unlikely to have been paralysed for precisely 10,000 days, but something approximating it.
Also, don't forget that Islam, Christianity and Judaism are all Abrahamic religions, so technically, they all worship the same god. The name doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of things.

unfnknblvbl
04-26-2006, 01:37 AM
actually, I take that back - a brief check on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allah) shows that...

The word Allāh is the Arabic term for "God". In other languages, it is often used to refer specifically to the Islamic concept of God

Ashes-TO-Ashes

I don't care what Allah means to whom. He said "heaven", so there is no need to discuss Allah.

unfnknblvbl
04-26-2006, 05:56 AM
that's precisely what I'm debating - I'm not hearing 'heaven' - I'm hearing something with an L sound in it.. distinctly not a V sound.
I've tried to hear Heaven and God and Angels, but nothing fits quite like Allah. I'm not saying it as a pro-islamic person, which I'm not, I'm just saying what I hear, and I'm asking people to open their minds and ears a bit, and to discuss the possibility.

First I must say, the lyrics seem to be complete as of LiLponyAddictions last post. Good job everyone :) I've been wondering about a lot of things in this songs.

As far as the allah vs heaven, there is no way he is saying allah because the vowel sounds are completely wrong for him to be saying allah. The V sound is easily lost amongst the symbols Danny is hitting while Maynard is singing this line (due to the v sound being close in signal range to that of a symbol hit) but the vowel sounds he's singing are definitely "eh" and "eh" not "ah" and "ah" so unless Maynard doesn't know how to pronounce "allah" he's saying "heaven"

unfnknblvbl
04-27-2006, 12:38 AM
there's also no final 'en' sound, in what I'm hearing - to get "Heaven" in there, you need to run the two words together, and drop the leading H, leaving something that would sound like "I only pray effer knows.."

Possibly this is a deliberate move on Maynard's part?

Agreed, but personally I think it would be 'the one who illuminated, my little piece of the divine' (ie Judith did not illuminate MJK's piece of the divine, but rather she generally illuminated and was also his little piece of the divine)

And as far as 'heaven' goes, the 'en' from heaven blends into the n from 'knows', I think that's why you're not hearing it.

Nah, I've spotted some potential errors in that lot, now that I've taken the time to read what he wrote properly..

fading all the trials and the tribulations
That could well be either "feigning" "failing" or even... "faking" - I'm not sure which, so I'm throwing that out there for discussion.

but not for the collective judas,
who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
your little piece of the divine,

There's very definately another hard 'B' or 'D' sound before "the collective" - so I'm going to have to go back to the earlier "but enough about the collective Judas"
I'm also dubious about the "..you were the one who would have made it" but the only thing I can think of to fit what I hear there is "..the one who would only made it" - which is largely nonsensical, and I'm just thowing that out there for further discussion.
"your little piece of the divine" could almost be "you'll have a piece of the divine" - or even, "you'll eat a piece of the divine" - again, nonsensical, discussion point only.

high as a wave but ill rise on up off the ground

I'm about 99% certain that this is "High is the way, but our lives are upon the ground"

I've already been over the Heaven/Allah bit before... "10000 days.." should really be written long-hand though :P

set as i am in my ways and my arrogance
burnin all through tossed upon the believers

"Set as I am, in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof tossed upon the believers" is what I think it is.
Why burden of proof?
Well, I think Maynard is talking about the logical fallacy, wherin you believe that something does something because it cannot be proven that it does not.
Think of that Simpons Episode where Lisa offers Homer an "anti-tiger rock" - Homer asks if it works or not, to which Lisa replies along the lines of "do you see any tigers around here?" - naturally, Homer stupidly offers to buy the rock from Lisa.

Maynard is continually "tossing" the burden of proof onto the followers of christianity - the "believers". He is asking them to prove that god exists, and when they can only say that it can't be proven that he/she/it doesn't exist, therin lies the 'burden of proof'

should you see your maker's face tonight
look em in the eye...

Sorry, this one's a grammatical issue, largely.
"Maker's" - Singular, possessive.
"look em in the eye" - 'em' short for them. Plural.
That really needs to be "look him in the eye.." to make even the slightest bit of sense.

I agree on this part.

Lots of good work here, but some bits were bugging me so I took a crack at it (while also fixing the structure/punctuation/capitalization, so it doesn't grate on my "that's-bad-English" nerve...)

Our way into the arms of the Savior
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations
None of us have actually been there
Not like you

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choice
These hypocrites won't see

But nothing - Not the collective Judas
Who could deny?
You were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine

This little light of mine
The gift you passed onto me
I'm going to let it shine
To guide you safely on your way
Your way home...

What are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly ?

High is the way
But our eyes are upon the ground
You were the Light and the Way
That they'll only read about
I only pray Heaven knows
When to lift you out
10,000 days in the fire is long enough
You're going home

You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates sayin'
"I have come home now
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now, give me my, give me my wings!"

Give me my
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my wings....

You are the Light, the Way
That they will only read about

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burning all through, tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
Judith Marie, unconditional one

Daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this, bold suggestion
Should you see your Maker's face tonight
Look 'im in the eye
Look 'im in the eye
And tell Him
I never lived a lie
Never took a life
But surely saved one
Hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home

I know some of that is different than what anyone else here has posted. I'm confident this version, while not perfect, is closer to what's there both in matching the syllables and in following the story of an unbeliever coming to understand how someone can have faith and realizing that even if he doesn't agree with her that most others who profess to have such faith fall so far short of the mark that he decides to take some of her faith upon himself to ensure she gets to Heaven.

When you look at it that way, it makes a whole lot of sense that the song condemning hypocrites comes right after it, now doesn't it?

Unless I missed something I added, the corrections are in bold.

It is illuminated for the simple reason of the sound and logical cohesion to the next paragraph discussing light. The little piece of the divine she passed onto him is what he's giving back to guide her through...

And it's FEIGNING not failing. Feigning as in faking trials and tribulations, just as the context talks of rationalizing our way into the arms of the Savior. It's the same shit.

And to whoever suggested that this song is about Lucifer...

That's clearly the stupidest thing to cross my line of sight.

Father? Son? Spirit? Divine? Heaven? Hallelujah? Wings? High is the way? Not lying? Saving lives? Your Maker? Pillar of faith ascending? Leaving the fire 10,000 days later? Going to the arms of our Savior?

Cmon, man... I know some of you like to portray Tool or Maynard as a Satanic and religion hater.

Watch, now it'll be considered cool around here to be religious.

Absolutely. I thought I had chaged that.

I disagree. Listen to it again. For it to be "choices" he has to be saying "choy-sieze" with a long "e" sound.

Either way the context is pretty much the same. However, the long "e" sound is very clear to me there.

But nothing - Not the collective Judas
Who could deny?
You were the one who illuminated
My lil' piece of the divine...

Absolutely. Can't believe I missed that one.
But he's not saying "my piece" he's saying her faith is what made her divine. HER light showed HER the way to God. Or, more accurately, show her the way to be good and pure no matter if there is a God or not.

I added your corrections to my post above.

You know... I listened to it a second ago, and it could also very easily (and probably more so) be "my idle peice of the divine..." where my and idle blend together as one word.

It sounds more legitimate based on the enunciation alone.

It fits perhaps better in context too...

"My idle piece of the divine..."
"My idle" seems to fit better in context with the song. I listened over and over, saying "My little" "Your Little" and "My idle". I finally concluded on "My Idle". Even if I'm wrong, I think it's definitely saying something about his piece of the divine.

"High is the way
But our lives are upon the ground"
Although listening to I can can go both ways, "eyes" and "lives", "lives" seems to fit better in context with being lifted out of the fire.

"I only pray Heaven knows"
Again, listening to this, I could go both ways. I can see how some of you hear "Allah", but I can also hear an "en" sound at the end. I can't hear the "H" at the beginning, but it's like that with a lot of "H" words in this song. I decided on "Heaven" due to context.

Not much more to say, but I'll add my comments anyway...this song takes music to a new level. The breadth and finesse of the composition, coupled with the emotion of the lyrics and the song's remarkably delicate execution, serve to remind me why I should feel privileged to be alive. *applauds Tool*

1 Sounds kinda like "When...," doesn't it? Probably supposed to be "What...," but when you've got a take in the moment, you use it.
2 Listened intensely for "wave." So not there.
3 Listened intensely for "eyes." Again, so not there.
4 Again, no "off."
5 Not "they'll." Definitely present tense.

Well, fibbers makes more sense considering the very next line. Also, flippant is an adjective and can't be plural.

And "her condition won"?

C'mon. Like he's going to be triumphantly celebrating that his mother was killed by a stroke?

That is absolutely absurd. If anything, he would be singing about how she overcame her condition and died in peace, nor that her condition beat her.

That's just fucked.

Am I the only one who takes issue with this line at the end:

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence

-------------------

I'm pretty sure that at the end of Wings pt 2, it says COOL fluorescence as opposed to COLD fluorescence (the line at the end of Wings Pt 1).

Any thoughts? Kinda makes sense, since cool indicates more of a calming closure than the impending-doom "cold" at the end of Wings for Marie.

Its nitpicky but i think its an important distinction! Anyone else hear "cool" ??

None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choices, hypocrites won't seek.

But, enough about the collective Judas’,
Who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
You'll have a piece of the divine.
[you were the one who eliminated idle piece of the divine]

This little light of mine it gives your past unto me,
I'll let it shine,
To guide you safely on your way,
Your way home...

What are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them home to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is our way, but our lives are up on the ground.
[High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground.]
You are the light and the way, they'll only read about.
I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough, you're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now! My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings."

Give me my x5
Give me my wings.

You are my light, a way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers

You were my witness,
My eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion:
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

Fair enough point regarding the lyric not meaning that maynard is religious/christian. However, whether or not the holy trinity originated in pagan myth is, in my opinion, irrelevent to the song. It's quite obvious that any references to Christianity are there because, as is shown here and in 'Judith', his mother held onto her Christian beliefs despite how much she suffered. Hence, while other people 'rationalise their way into the arms of the saviour', she deserves her place in heaven more than them. Sorry if I was being obvious.

Also,
Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but, further to the more obvious references to Christianity with Judas, Zion and the Trinity, I believe that the lyric, "This little light of mine, the gift you passed on to me; I'll let it shine" references a common Christian song with the lyric "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

Just in case I need to clarify, though i shouldn't, i myself am not in any way religious, so I'm not twisting stuff.

Burden of proof tossed upon the believers

It's "tossed upon non-believers." Maynard is referring to the fact that atheists are viewed as the aberration in society, not the other way around.

And even though flippant is an adjective, I'd swear that he's saying the plural of it as a noun...

In 10000 days, most people seem to agree that he is saying "the light and the way they'll only read about", but ive had the cd for a few weeks (got lucky, not a pirate) and Im pretty sure he says "You we're alive in a way that they'll only read about." Call me retarted

Hm....sounds plausible, actually, except that "a" sounds like "the."

Plausable...

"You were alive in the way they'll only read about"

and the second time
"You were alive the way that they will only read about"
(probably more leaning toward)
"You were a light, a way that they will only read about"

It is iffy either way.

Other things I am hearing are

"Ignorant fiddlers in the congregation"
(Implies that they are unsure about themselves, and that their concentration and dedication lacks)

"Enough about the collective Judiths"
(I think this makes sense because only accumulatively are they comparable to her. Judas was not IMHO bad enough to warrant accumulation)

"High is the way, but our lives are upon the ground)
(We look toward heaven, rather than living our everyday lives. Here is now people)

"You were the one who illuminated you're little piece of the divine"
(Maybe "You're a little piece of the divine"?)

"Judith Marie, Unconditional, Worn."
(Judith Marie. Unconditional. Won." - I think I hear worn though. What is "one"? seems too vague. Maybe he considers her a winner in their religous debate?)

Such an amazing and intense song. As long as we're still discussing lyrics, this is what I get when I listen to it. Just a few minor tweaks here and there to add to what most of you already have:

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun,
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations.
None of us have actually been there--
Not like you.

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation,
Gather around spewing sympathy.
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choices, hypocrites won't see.

But enough about the collect of Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine?
This little light of mine, the gift you passed on to me;
I'll let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?
High as a wave, but I'll rise on up off the ground.
You are the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray God knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough, you're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my wings!"

Give me my, give me my wings!

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

I haven't had the opportunity to read through this thread, so forgive me if it has been mentioned, but with regards to the line "But surely saved one," both in Wings pt.1 and 2.

I always heard it as "Would surely save one." that is, I never lived a lie, never took a life, and I would surely save one. To me this makes more sense, and seems to fit more than the "but surely save one" that I keep seeing.

I've been thinking about this one quite a bit --- and now I realize the answer is obvious.

Woman.

Judith Marie -- unconditional woman. I just listened and it works.

I'm pretty sure it's not

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burning all through, tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one

but rather,

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one

As in, "I don't believe in God because there's no proof, but you were close enough to divinity for me."

The first version doesn't really make any sense, and he pretty clearly articulates a /p/ in that line. At least in my ears.
