Hey everyone. This is my first post on the site, but I've been reading it off and on since Lateralus. Thanks to all of you who took the time to put up the guitar tabs and lyrics, I've been gratefully using them a lot over the past few years.
I don't intend to deconstruct Vicarious, just point out a few of my observations for you all to chew on.
I definately hear a guitar riff from Adam that's "almost" the intro riff off 46 & 2, but it flows so well with the Schism-ish bass line that it forms a kind of combination of Aenima-Lateralus style. Maynard's lyrics remind me of "Pet" (notice the "death rattle" yet again?) and "The Outsider". Later in the song I hear more of a Lateralus influence.
But I think the fusion of sounds really produces something new around 4:10 when the odd-time-signatured drums meet with (to me anyway) Maynard's most evocative lyrics of the song: " part vam - pire, part war - rrior, car- ni- vore and - voyeur".
Musically this song blew me away. Its just familiar (i.e. heavy and melodic) enough without being repetitive. Lyrically, I was a little surprised at how straightforward it is. Usually Tool lyrics leave me thinking, alright now what the f*** does that mean? But these don't seem to be open to much interpretation, unless I'm missing something. As I read on this site earlier, Vicarious is like an in-your-face Stinkfist. I think Maynard hints at as much with the line "Shouldn't have to say it all again".
Anyway, end of my first post. Its been way too long since I've heard new Tool, and I'm just glad its here. Vicarious is already the best song I've heard in a long while, and I have a feeling that the rest of the album will be even better.
