If you listen to the intro backwards, it sounds the same

Hey, so does the intro of Reflection!

No it doesn't... or at least the drums aren't symmetric. :)

along with the reflection thing....ever since i first heard the song, i always thought that it sounded a little backwards, when it was played forwards. the whole tabla drumming and the way maynards notes come out. i went through a phase of playing songs backwards (another one bites the dust, stairway to heaven....) so i know what "backwards sounds" sound like. reflection always sounded a little backwards....

that's actually really cool

Maybe they played it backwards on the record, so when you play the intro backwards, it's actually forwards. Deeeeep.

Yeah, useless fact, yet interesting.

Wait, so "Vicarious" isn't a decoy neccesarily, but the real new single is "Vicarious" backwards? OMGZ

that wouldn't matter...becuase it sounds almost the same backwards (the drum hits sound a little off, but that cant be avoided..)

it's not the same backwards. Similar, but not the same. Look, it's all straight eighth notes, bass and guitar, playing the same sequence four times, so you won't notice a difference in rhythm. Backwards, you have the same notes, but in a different order.

Wow, they must have taken The Patient, reversed it, and put it on the new album.

Also, Reflection isn't symmetrical. Similar, but not exactly.

Um... you guys are all wrong. It only sounds symetric because you haven't heard the intro enough times to actually understand what's going on there with the notes the two are playing. I don't claim to think that I know, but I can tell it's not the same melody backwards as forwards. Just sounds that way because every Tool song uses the same 5 goddamn notes these days, it seems... patient, schism, now this. Silly regurgitators...

im confused, it it backwards or forwards?

Jimmeny
04-16-2006, 02:01 PM
It's forwards because the notes on the guitar decay properly. It's also forwards because, as 'iamisandisnt' said, it's not palendromic or symmetric, it's just the same 5 notes played in reverse. Reflection also isn't palendromic, you can tell, the bassline is merely backwards, not a proper palendrome.

What program did you guys use to play the song backward? I would be interested to listen to other songs backward as well.
