Schizm seems more intelligent while Vicarious is more hardcore.

I have to say schism > vicarious. Schism is just so fucking powerful even 5 years later, I can't even understand how they conjured up some of the stuff from Lateralus.

schism by 10 miles. vicarious is very good but more of a balls out rock song.
schism is one of the greatest accomplishments in rock, it's unbelievably beautiful and complex especially "cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion/between two lovers etc." right at that part, very few songs have ever come close to the climax schism has right there. maynards vocals are perfect.

Schism is better than Vicarious because Vicarious recycles a few ideas musically. However, if Vicarious had come before Schism, I would have to use the same logic to say Vicarious was better! I guess it's just a problem with knowing Lateralus too well, and unfortunately Vicarious does sound abit like Lateralus II (not that that's a bad thing)

Schism is more catchy and hooky for sure and thats never a bad thing but also Vicarious is much more heavy which is not a bad thing either. Tool gained a lot of new fans with Schism and hopefully those fans will still but this new Tool album even if they think it's just OK. It's not bad marketing. I love them both Equally. They are Equal Children.

- didn't blow me away at first.

- after 10 or so listens it's grown on me, fucking amazing, blown away.

- love the new approach.

All opinions are wrong until the album is taken in full and judged in it's own right.

Right now Vicarious, I'm really digging it, I think I like it better than most Lateralus songs (save Lateralus and D/R/T)

i vote for vicarious..

it has elements of schism which i like but it also has just a badass hard rockness to it which i love.

Vicarious is a real song, that takes time to digest and appreciate and maybe a little brains and taste, not like this verse-chorus-verse trash some of you kiddies have grown up with.

Hey, if you don't like it you can always go back to your superficial disturbed and staind albums. Enjoy.

tool is a band where i cannot pick one song over another. this is a band who's members strive to take each song as far as they can take it. each song is far too different from the next for comparison to be made.

i have to say that this is one of the first tool songs i REALLY liked on the first listen. all other tool songs were much more of an aquired taste. i will see how this song stands the test of time for me, but as of now im really diggin it

Agree completely. I liked exactly 4 Tool songs upon first listen--46&2, Schism, Parabola, and now Vicarious.

An amazing piece of music off of what will no doubt be a truly amazing album.

I have a feeling "Schism" will top "Vicarious" in the hearts of most after the album has time to settle, but this is just one of those matter-of-opinion things that could be debated forever.

Let the new stuff digest before you compare; that's all I'm saying.

I dont know if anyone can be fully truthful with their answer until we give this shit time to sink in. its been 1 day vs ~5 years of listening to each song respectively.

but id agree, schism.

but still, lets give it time :)
