What do you guys think of the singing? The music is fucking mindblowing, but Maynard has never sounded like this on another Tool album. I'm still soaking it in, it's unbelievable...

The fact that the guitar is just bland. Adam is trying too hard to sound like Meshuggah and its not working welll.

If I was trying to be completely neutral (which is hard because I love Tool), it is true that Adams little solos at the end don't really need to be there, he's never done stuff like that before and what he's added there is not really anything that fits into the style of the song that well.

The vocals are good, I like them alot, the added harmony that was there on Lateralus has been built upon and sounds very good, it feels like he's learned how to be angsty and emotive whilst being with APC and it works very well in this song, which is slightly more catchy than usual (which isn't a bad thing, often the word 'catchy' is thrown around as a disparaging comment, but I don't mean it so.)

The drums are as powerful as on Lateralus, infact better, but cos they gel with the rest of the band to create one full, bad ass sound as opposed to the 'fucking hell nice drumming' on LAteralus.

However, I don't like the chuggy section around the 6 minute mark, it's basically a "The Grudge" yoink. As artists I would have expected them to go 'nah, sounds abit like the grudge, lets try and rework it', but they didn't.

But what the fuck do I know?

I like the 'lalalala-lie' section, it does sound nice as a melody and the irony and cynicism in doing a 'la la la' section that is actually saying 'lie' is quite poignant.

Hey guys I have a theory behind why his vocals are back in the mix...

The point of the song, or so it seems to me is that the fabrication of the television ultimately desensitizes people and promotes laziness....

Maybe the mixed down vocals are a juxtaposition of the difficulty to see the "truth of it all" behind everything else?

Like - you cant hear Maynard well so you cant hear the point, just like you cant see the point on the television because of the lies and coverups it uses.

The vocals are very different. They are a bit too low in my opinion. I know they wanted to do that on purpose. But I wish they were a bit louder. Other than that, good stuff.

We need to read the lyrics, but I think this part is ironic. I like it, we're all gonna sing this at the shows.

The last chorus/the end is quite high for Maynard. He hasn't lost his voice.

i love how he doesnt say the words completely or fully... just as Alex Grey said something about Maynard singing in syllables, maybe he meant something like the vocals on Vicarious. To me i like how Maynards voice is in the back, the lyrics are harder to figure out so you have to listen to it more and more :)

Well, the music kicks ass. It's missing any sort of actual emotion in the vocals. That's what I love about TOOL, their songs make you FEEL. This one does not do that very much for me. It's hard to convey emotion when you sing like that I guess.

Bloody
04-14-2006, 08:52 PM
the vocals were actually striking to me. I like how subdued they were. I heard some people comparing his vocals to something a perfect circle would do but I don't hear that at all. I cant compare his vocals in this song to anything hes done.

hey just now when i read 'perfect circle' from your post the song from 'emotive' popped into my head - you know the hushed one with miniture piano in it? similar to what danny plays at the start of this one.

Maynard's voice sounds very different, but I think that it suits the song very well. His singing is very emotional here, the last 'Vicariously I live while the whole world dies' blew me away. As someone said - Maynard was singing his soul out. Probably he won't sing like this on the whole album, we all know how MJK can use different singing styles, depending on the context of the song. So, hell yeah, I like the vocals on Vicarious.

-----------

Since when does Maynard have to stick to his "TOOL" voice as opposed to his "APC" voice? He's the fucking singer for both bands, he can sound like himself or however he chooses if he wants. People seem to make up fucking rules and guidelines that Tool have to follow apparently in order to recieve high regards.

I mentioned this in another thread. The "lalalie" immediately follows the line about "singing to the death rattle." That context might make it a little easier to swallow for those of you who can't fathom why Tool would put something so, um, melodic in a song (which I don't get at all). It's kinda funny to see some people get all bent out of shape in fear that Tool might have gone soft (aka, "there's not enough screaming!!!!!!11!!11!). I remember reading about the "Meshuggah" influence and being a bit worried. Tool has always impressed with their iron fist/velvet glove abilities, I'd hate to see that lost in the name of doing something "hard"
