We know what the album COVER is?
I was unaware.
Still don't get why they picked an incomplete piece...maybe that'll fit into it. *shrug*

I thought we were past the whole real/not real thing by now....
I suppose anything is possible, however, I'd like to note that the album is available for preorder on Amazon.com along aide the same image that Blair posted at toolband.com, and Amazon would be opening themselves up to legal action from consumers and consumer advocacy groups if the product they were representing was not the same one they were selling....
I don't think a company as big as Amazon.com wouldn play around like that

Out of 35 people, only 5 people hate the cover artwork. If that is true, why do we spend so much time weeding through people crying about how much they hate the album art? Could it be that the whiners just can't shut the hell up? I think so.

What I cant work out if why everyone thinks its incomplete artwork from the Alex Grey design. I have seen the pic people think is the "finished" version of the artwork, and its very colourfull.
Im no painter, but why would you start with black, you cant colour over the top of it

It's ok. I think like many people have said before, this image may not be a good representative of what the album will look like when it's in your hands. It would probably actually be pretty cool if it has some holographic effect that causes the head to sort of "turn" to follow you depending on the angle you look at it.
Although... I too think that several of the fake pieces were more interesting than this one. Maybe Tool should hold a fan art contest for their next release (be it DVD or whatever). They could choose which ever one they not only liked best but also tied into the meaning they want to convey the most. This whole thing has definitely proven that some Tool fans are decent artists.
In the end... I say it's not the best, but it will probably make a little more "sense" when we actually have the album. May 2nd seems so damn far away right now...

dude, seriously, get over it...
that's the real cover...
Amazon is not going to misreprent a product that they are currently taking preorders for and accepting money for...the consumer proection groups would have a field day with them if they did...
I know that tool has lied to thier fans in the past so I can't blame for being somewhat skeptical, but you still have to use a bit of common sense...

i sort of like it, i mean its better than the undertow cage and the lateralus cover, but why use a preexisting painting and stick some eyes on it? some of the fakes were soooo much cooler as well as the logos.

The point is that the only thing anyone knows about the record is what they have been told. Amazon, MTV, whoever, is only goingto follow what they have been told. Who is to say that what they have been told is the real deal? Not you, not me. There WILL be an album, and it doesnt matter what the title is in the business world, Amazon accepted pre-orders for the record long before it had a title and a face. If, on May 1, it is revealed that the title/art has been a hoax, Amazon will quickly change their title but will honor all pre-orders without any harm done.

lol, that's a nice theory and all, but I have my doubts that the record company would burn bridges like that with a major online marketplace like Amazon or with any other distributor for that matter as part of a hoax on Tool's fans...

For all of you pulling the "preexisting AG crap" card, you really don't get the message do you. They chose their artwork for a reason. For whatever reason they picked what they wanted to pick for the purspose that best serves THE BANDS own ultimate design and who are we to say that it doesn't fit, or looks like shit, or that they could have done better work with some snow and a full bladder. Call me an obsequious tool or subscriber to "the man", but if that's what they think best serves their ideals and thoughts for the album more power to them. Last time I checked their the artists and were all just a bunch of drooling sycophantic slobs.

what bridges would they burn? Seriously, nobody would try to pull them to court for having a false cover posted. Some dark graphic with Tool on it is still better than "no cover art available" isn't it?

Kind of a paradox, Tool albums sell to Tool fans. Amazon, or any other distributor, are not going to lose any serious capital because Tool wants to play a joke on its fan base. It's not going to be like "OMG -- Tool lied to us and Amazon helped them I'm not going to buy The Roots new album now". If anything Tool is only hurting their own demographic cause Tool albums sell to Tool fans..... wow dejavu.

First of all its not even a "preexisting AG" its a Chris Sizemore titled "three faces in one", just spiced up a little...didn't like it then dont like it now.

Sellers would probably not appreciate being made to take part in a hoax without their knowledge...and the next time the record company sends them album art, they might not believe it's real...
Remember, not everyone is as up on the whole tool hoax thing as everyone on this board, and others might not find the whole thing as humorous, especially if they are a business that is accepting preorders for a product that they are misrepresenting

I think it's fake. And I hate it.
EDIT: Though it might be real for the DVD. In that case, I would be okay with it. It works for a live DVD of the Lateralus tour.

As paraflux said, all they might change is the title of the album, the song names and the album art (there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the album mini is not what the cover of the album will be, even though it will probably be part of the artwork). We all know the album exists so all that could be changed for people who have paid for it are relatively superficial things (yes, I know Tool are an art orientated group but they don't make art with accompanying music, they make music with accompanying art).

Just another random thought. Blair said that when the album art leaked, we would know that it was Tool. Seeing as the artwork hasn't "leaked" what he said will make a lot of sense when it does. Imagine in a week someone posts the full artwork and smack dab in the middle of it is the full pic that he posted a clip of on ToolBand. We'd all immediately know that this leaked artwork was the real deal. I sincerely doubt that the little "mini" posted on TB is indeed the cover in all its glory.

At first, I didn't expect the whole Alex Grey trippiness cover again for this album because according to Maynard the lyrics aren't as much about universal consiousness, enlightenment, etc. On second glance though the actual expression on the face doesn't look enlightened at all. It looks placid, maybe even apathetic. I love this piece because of the trademark alex grey beauty, and at the same time it's still dark and dreary.
