Kerrang has these little facts that they print every week called "things we did not know last week" and hey, hey tool are in one. they mention some of the new instruments used by tool in the new album one of them is the gong (we all knew that) and another is an egg whisker/beater

Does maynard stand around awkwardly with a guitar like device?

You're talking about the headless Steinberger bass.

He actually does play quite a lot in live Triad.

i would love to hear the band incorperate the flute-a-phone some how. that would be totally cutting edge.

Of course the new promo pics point more toward the possibility of the skin flute =P... I take it that would be Maynard's solo though haha.

Sorry didn't mean to take that into the gutter, though it already seemed to be headed that way =P... I really wanna see what Adam's dimension beam does, that thing looks sick. And man oh man, the legendary purple drums...

And oh yeah, how could I forget... COWBELL =P

Seriously, well I guess Danny has enough kit to work with, but Neil Peart has some pretty sweet little doo-dads he's always messing around with: ie: xylophones, etc.. Well I guess Danny can just sample those now though huh. I can't wait... but I'll have to =(

And yeah the epilady, you know Dave Navarro used to use that, Adam learned that from seeing Jane's in concert - and there is a trick Buzz (from the melvins), I think it is Buzz if I remember right, does. You can point a remote control at the pickups of a guitar and push buttons, and different notes come out. That might be sorta cool, if used in the right context lol...

All I can think of though man... "there is some interesting guitar work, it is almost Hendix like" ... yes he left out the R lol.

that's bullshit. i tried it and what comes out are just some clicking noises. nothing interesting. at least with a regular ir remote.

An epilady however, or any other device with a small electric motor, does a good job.

Haha you beat me to it - if you don't pay close attention you can't even see him do it, man it's lightning fast, and he has to even pick the mallet up and puts the stick in his armpit while he's doing it. Simply put the man is... THE SHIT =)

I listened to the studio version of Lateralus and Danny doesn't use the gong, perhaps he only uses it during live versions.

Each remote works differently. The universal remote from Cox Cable here in the northeast works amazingly well. wide variety of sounds.

Danny uses the gong on the studio version of lateralus (at 8m 03 sec)

The steinberger guitar maynard uses has most likely got a synth pickup attached and he uses it to play synth sounds, not guitar sounds.

you have to set your pickups to the same place you are pushing buttons, add some flanger and delay as well it helps.
