[03/02/06] - Tool in Oz?

We're hearing very early rumors of Tool booking dates in August for Australia. Check the tour page for details. [Posted by Chris] §

it's a nice thought, but rod laver arena is already booked on the 12th of august, and for most of that week (the boy from oz)

so it's a fair chance those dates are all wrong

mattw and I both got replies from Sydney SuperDome saying that Tool wasn't scheduled for that date (10th August).
When I was a kid I used to get angry at maps that didn't include Tasmania, even though I never went there or anything.

mattw and I both got replies from Sydney SuperDome saying that Tool wasn't scheduled for that date (10th August).

Yeah, this is what the Sydney SuperDome people sent me back within a day of me emailing them asking about Tool etc. I've posted this somewhere else but here it is again:

"Dear Matthew,

Further to your email below, please be advised that we are currently not in
a position to advise if Tool are performing at the Sydney SuperDome on 10th August 2006.

However, may I suggest becoming a Sydney SuperDome online Club Member. Simply go to www.superdome.com.au, click on Member and follow the prompts. The advantage of being of being a Club Member is that you receive automatic
email notifications of upcoming events and are provided with the opportunity
to order tickets through the Club before they go on sale to the General Public.

Furthermore, Club Membership is currently free of charge.

Regards,

Sydney SuperDome Club Co-ordinator"

So read into it what you like. I think the sentence "please be advised that we are currently not in a position to advise if Tool are performing at the Sydney SuperDome on 10th August 2006" is perhaps hinting at something. Like I've said previously, if i randomly emailed them and asked "Is ******* playing at your venue" etc., I'd probably get an email saying something simple like "No. There are no shows booked for that artist" and so on.

I'm optimistic. Tool just re-added those deleted European tour dates and they did come here ever so briefly in 2001 (July) just after Lateralus had come out etc. so we will see...

By the way, Rubb., you are welcome to stay at my house (in Sydney) if you decide to make the great journey to eventually see Tool live in concert. I know you'd probably go to Melbourne though but the offer still stands. In fact, if anyone in the southern hemisphere can't make it to a Tool show, I'll do my best to find you somewhere to stay...

They better come to Perth. When Lateralus first came out they did a tour of Sydney and Melbourne and then the next year they did a full tour of Australia so I am hopeful of getting to see them here in Western Australia.

They never did a full tour of Australia.

They never did a full tour of Australia.

Correct! They did a full tour of MAINLAND Australia but sadly, for some, neglected Tasmania on their travels... sorry Rubb. and all other Tassie Tool fans.

But they did play Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra (only once - sorry), Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth in April/May 2002 as well as Sydney(twice) and Melbourne in July 2001.

I can't wait for them to come back, hopefully this year. I don't think they will be at BDO 2007 because I've got a strong feeling the Red Hot Chili Peppers will headline that but that's another story...

Anyway, hope they come soon!

p.s. I'd just like to congratulate myself on finally reaching 100 posts! It's taken me over 3 years but I got there....

Rubb.

mattw

Darwin? Then where? Alice Springs? Townsville? Wagga Wagga? And so on...

I consider a full tour of Australia to include MOST state capital cities, like the ones I listed, plus a few other shows.

I'm sorry they didn't play in Tasmania although your "I am Satan" anagram is pretty good...

Just move somewhere big Rubb. It will work out for the best!

Then hopefully they'll (the BDO) sell many many tickets like they did in 2004 with Metallica etc. I think I will go if the RHCP are there. The last few years/lineups have been kinda dull but '07 should be good...

Make that TWICE for Lateralus (once previously in 1997 for Aenima).
The second Lateralus concert had a fantastic setlist - opening with Flood and they also played The Patient and Swamp Song . . .that was a treat.

So yeah, even if its not til late 06/early 07 I can wait.

That's ok, I thought that's probably what you meant. Thing is, first day music sales are generally driven by fans anyway, and if there was a fan of both PJ and Tool, and the CD happened to be released on the same day, they'd probably buy both anyway.

Well, I don't know how old this is but Australia has finally caught on - check out the Sanity link below, it says May 1st is the release date!!

http://www.sanity.com.au/product.asp?intProductID=674763&intArtistID=8845

That's pretty cool if you ask me - May 1st is gonna be a great day! Sanity should do well that day too as Pearl Jam's new album is released at the same time...

I will be at Sanity (i still have $25 left on a gift voucher from Xmas!) at like 9am Monday May 1st although I might try asking them about it on the Saturday or Sunday just in case I can get it early etc.? From there it's only a 5min walk (downhill - great) to my stereo and 77 minutes of long-awaited Tool goodness! Only trouble is I have 5 or 6 hours of class that day...

Anyway, hope some tour news comes soon.

Also, with the text 'Tool' and '10,000 days' NOT on the cover, I actually think the cover is pretty good - it definitely fits with my pre-conception of what Tool's albums should look like. I always expected something dark/black, just like Lateralus, Aenima and Undertow...

I think it will look great at live shows if they display that 3 sided head/face on the giant projection screens and slowly move/rotate it, similar to the 'flaming eyes' animation on the Lateralus tour... I reckon it would look cool slowly spinning around, possibly with the eyes all slowly opening and lighting up etc. I'm sure Tool have got some trippy artwork planned for their gigs...

New release CD's come out on Saturdays in Australia (used to be Sundays), so if the stock in there on time you should be able to get it on the Saturday beforehand. It would be unusual for the CD to be embargoed until the 1st of May.
I work for Brazin (the company that is Sanity, Virgin and HMV) which makes me credible, I should hope.

Yes. If you went into Sanity/Virign/HMV on the 29th and they had it unpacked and ready to go, you'd get it. Release dates and embargoes are not always the same thing..

The reason Sanity puts out major label new releases on Saturdays is so we can get our charts done before our competitors.

For some reason I have a feeling only a few selected metro stores (Virgin Megastore & Highpoint Sanity to name a couple of Vic stores) will have have it in stock on the release date. When the DVD singles came out, I bought them both at JB before they were even in Sanitys computer system, and even then it was about 2-3 weeks before they actually turned up in the stores. To be honest, I don't think there is enough hype about Tool in Australia for a company like Brazin to be bothered pushing the record. My bet is 90% of Sanity/Virgin/HMV employees don't even know who Tool are or what they are all about... but I live in the sticks, things could be different in the city.

My advice: Pre-order it NOW and then go in on the 29th and say "Heeey, aren't CD's supposed to come out on Saturdays?". Or steal my job and get it -illegally- as soon as it arrives.. :D

mattw
03-25-2006, 04:40 AM
Thanks for the info MeganAnn - Sanity have been both good and bad to me in the past. For one release, 2 different sanity stores had no idea what i was talking about even though I went in on the day of release etc. But another time they had a new release before both JB and HMV... really surprising.

Anyway, it shouldn't really matter - the album comes out May 1st and if I have to wait an extra 24 hours to buy/hear it, then so be it. A day or two extra (worst case scenario) isn't much compared with 5 years in between albums...

Still, it would be cool to use your job to 'acquire' a copy of the new album as soon as it comes... I'm sure by the end of April there will be plenty of 'stuff' floating around the internet, but I'm gonna try to avoid it

Thanks again.

I got another email back from the Sydney Superdome, which has now changed its name to Acer Arena, about Tool possibly playing in August etc.

"Hi Matthew,

There has been no confirmation as yet of the band coming to the venue. But as you are now a club member, you will be notified should Tool be confirmed at the venue.

Regards."

So, again, there must be some details to be sorted out for Tool's little trip to Australia, especially now since they are playing in Japan August 12-13.

Just thought people might like to know...

I'm looking forward to the email that finally confirms they are playing etc., but I'll just have to wait and see...
