After emailing the DJ at KATT radio; he replied to me with this information. It is no longer a rumour - it is indeed the proof you all spent yesterday looking for. Of course as the subject in the email says, it is entitled to change due to the bands discretion, but the date is what the DJs have been told.

I certainly hope this isn't considered "rumour" topic worthy, from what I gather, this part is for actual info - this is actual info.

This is just more bullshit. Why would the release date of the single be kept secret from the fans and not to the radio stations. Also, why inform the radio stations that there will be a single on April 17th but not mention the title? Of course, it's all possible but I just don't believe it. Think about it, we don't know for a fact that the release date of the new album is May 2nd. All that we know for sure is that it's coming out in Spring. Blair said that they hope it will be released in May and hopefully at the beginning.

I understand that but the single release date is claimed to be April 17th, which is more than a month and a half away. The radio stations don't need that information just yet. What is the point of them even knowing that now? They don't know the title and they aren't telling people that that's the release date of the single. There's just no point, is there?

not that I know of, but once you decide to release a single a few weeks before the album, just seems logical to do it at the beginning of the week...I can't think of any compelling reason to pick a day in the middle of the week..

it doesn't really matter...the sooner the better...

it's just that, when I heard the original release date of 4/17 and saw that it was a Monday, I just assumed the band decided to do it at the beginning of the week two weeks before the record comes out...

There's just something more psychologically satisfying about releasing new stuff/information on a Monday than on a random day in the middle of the week

i don't see it being any more logical to do it on a monday as it is on a wednesday or a saturday or any day for that matter. doesn't seem to have any significance whatsoever, which is why i thought you might know some day the industry does things kind of like albums released on tuesdays.

albums are released on Tuesdays out of necessity so the record stores can receive them on Monday and have time to put them on the shelves...Tuesday was historically the earliest practical day of the week that new albums could be released since many stores are closed on Sundays and shipping services don't operate on Sunday...

"Might even go"... I think he just assumed that this could be the single.
The media don't know much more than us anyway.
Well they should know, since they are gettin it officialy, there should be some kind of contract or something. And as they said it, it seems they have sure that the track is called Vicarious. I think Tool wouldn't say that the first single they are releasing is just the first track, and then the radio would check it on the internet. This kinda proves to me the authenticity of the tracklisting.

mattw
03-21-2006, 08:43 PM
Yeah, in adding to the above posts, I think everyone just assumed that track 5 would be the first single because of the Andy King review and that the title, 'The Pot', corresponded with what Blair mentioned about the first single i.e. it starts with a P or a V etc.

Both songs (track 1 and track 5, 'Vicarious' and 'The Pot') have been reviewed in quite a positive manner:

Vicarious:

"Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats.
Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older
Tool track. Tribal drum beats f@!# with a lovely melody and climax with
Maynard’s vocals. I am going to cry". (Andy King)

"But I will tell you the opening cut for the new Tool album just smacked me in the head and it certainly is far more aggressive than what you’ll hear on or what you heard on Lateralus album." (Andrew Haug - Triple J)

The Pot:

"Oooooooh. This is THE one. Ya know what, pluggers? Radio might even go for this! Maynard’s vocals at the start are quite extraordinary". "Easily the most commercial track to date. In fact, easily the most commercial track Tool have EVER done. That guitar is waaay strong again". "This is still twisted. It’s hard but commercial. The end spells a relief as climactic as a boil bursting". "This is a SERIOUSLY awesome track. Just you mark my words". (Andy King again)

So either track sounds good...

The fact of the matter is singles are only lifted as a means to promote an album. The new album is going to chart in number 1 all over the world regardless of the first single. The second single however is the means of generating sell through.

I worked for a record company for a number of years. If the band was established we released what we called the albums "hit" as the second single to get more albums moving after the initial release rush.

Wait a minute... The radio version of schism is not the same as the album version. I am somewhat confident that there is no difference. - both clock in at about 6:49... maybe the track was shortened in specific markets, but I doubt that would be the case.

I think you're wrong, because the album process takes a shitload of people to make happen, including subcontractors for artwork and pressing aswell as the other people who worked in the recording studio, the mastering, the mixing. I understand that the embargo applies to all of these people and I doubt it's possible to keep a secret under wraps once this thing is lifted. Also with the single coming so will the concrete info including track titles and album name. It's when they really go into gear promoting the thing.

Read any leaked review of the album: they all mention it as being entirely untitled. Which means that none of them know the title or tracklisting and cannot give us any more concrete info than Blair. I, personally, believe that the 10kD stuff is true, but if you were looking for complete proof from an April 13th review, than you're not gonna find it.

I'm not talking about just the media. There are plenty of other ways info gets out. plus what would the point of not promoting the "real" album with illegitimate info be right before it's released. All that would do is cause more confusion and result in less album sales.

This thread isn't of much importance, I just decided to post it anyway for your guy's benefits in knowing if a leak will come out before the 17th or not ...

I emailed the local radio station here, 92.3 ... which was the station that played APC's Weak and Powerless a few days before everyone else. I recorded it off the radio and put that crappy ass version out on the internet for you all. Haha

Anyway, here's what was said:
--------

Subject RE: New Tool Single?
Date Fri, 07 Apr 2006 19:28:04 +0000

I wish I could say that we are going to sneak this one on the air, but they are being super guarded with this new Tool stuff. I can't say I blame them. Anyways, to answer your question, as far as I know, we have no exclusive leak with this song, boooo!

Thanks for listening!
xIggyx

--------
Subject: New Tool Single?

Hey Iggy,

Quick question. I know the new Tool single is suppsoed to hit the air on
April 17th. Have you guys gotten your copy of it yet? Is there any possibility
that it will be played before April 17th, like A Perfect Circle - Weak and
Powerless was played on 923 a few days before the rest of the country got it?

I'm really lookin forward to hearing it, thanks for any help. Keep up the good
work!

-Dan

DJ07
04-07-2006, 05:47 PM
I'm pretty sure they could get in trouble.

I'm still not clear as to what the deal with APC's single and them playing it early. Either APC gave them the go ahead as a special treat for Cleveland (doesn't make that much sense) or they just did it on their own and didn't expect someone to record it (me) because they weren't saying what the enw song was until the moment it was played.

I just had a feeling it was APC though and was ready for it.

Anyway, I'm not gonna hold my breath for a leak anymore. 10 days now, doesn't really matter.

The 17th of April is Maynard's birthday, right? Well, just imagine (haha) the single as a birthday gift from him to us (the Tool fans). Like he's going to give us a piece of his birthday cake. And I hope we'll all enjoy it. We won't get a piece of it a week before his birthday (nobody does that, I guess). So, just wait , and try to get busy the next few weeks and time will fly.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm also annoyed to by the "embargo", Blair being such a dick (I hope he'll get abducted by aliens someday), but well, just wait.

Logic tells me that you'd have to know the target before you could attack it. Hackers would usually know what they want to break in to. So the person would need to know the internet address of this secure server. I think that would involve either some inside information or using some kind of social engineering. I don't know if that's an accurate way of thinking though.

what are the chances of someone actually getting ahold of the single about a week ago?

My cousin, who is not the kind of person who makes up bullshit, told me that he heard the single at his friend's house a few days ago. He doesn't know where he got it or how, but he tells me that this is the type of person that could get ahold of something like that.

He said its really heavy, and that Maynard doesn't really sound like Maynard. Lots of vocal processing/distortion and he also mentioned that he's screaming at some parts.

My cousin lives on the Gulf Coast, and he has a lot of contacts. At the Tool show in Biloxi, he got to stand off on the side of the stage right near Adam and at APC at Voodoofest, he got to go backstage and met Billy, Josh, and Jeordie. He obviously knows some people who may have the access to something like that. He seemed really sure that it was THE single and not just some bullshit fake. I don't know what to think. He heard something, but it may not have been Tool.

It's exaustive how Pearl Jam's single and now also album (which is boring) can be easily found on the net, with worldwide suicide circulating since a month, ...while nothing from Tool is around at 17 days (28th April in Europe) from the release date. Even the cd cover is so sure.

Different marketing strategies.. or simply, Pearl Jam need to create the hype, Tool doesn't.

Totally! I have been the hugest pearl jam fan for years. I have all their albums and singles on vinyl, all books published and lots of rare tracks! But this new offering which i found the other day is utter shite! I hate to be so negative about someone else's art but the new album has nothing on earlier albums! Maybe they are to old [Hang on! Tool are about the same age!] or too rich to put out anything relative!

trust me, i know that you guys are tired of hearing about repeat things, but it does go against this whole "tool streaming the song on monday the 17th to the stations" i just called the local rock station in 98x, (843)-769-4799, and they say that they do in fact have the tool single at their station. i asked when they were going to play it, he said its up to the studio manager, but they probably wouldnt go against the monday the 17th release date. bitch all you want about a wasteful thread, but this does somewhat dispute the "stream over the internet" claim that was put out there.

Didn't they say all CLEAR CHANNEL owned radiostations were going to get it streamed?

Doesn't that negate all other radio stations?

Maybe THEY'LL get singles.

There's a locally owned radio station here [103.9 the edge] that constantly flaunts its anti-corporate attitude in a rather laid-back-but-nevertheless-hilarious manner --- anyways, it makes me wonder ... as popular a station as they are, if Tool streams the single ... are they going to be left out?

i guess not, cause the non clear channel stations already have the single's in their hands.

As it's my first post, I realize some of what I might relay will come across as circumspect, but trust me when i say that those of us in radio aren't going to receive "Vicarious" until 10am EST (7a PST) Monday morning. It's arriving in a couple of different ways. We will be provided the option to download a high quality MP3 or WAV file. It will also be Fed Ex'd to radio stations with a guaranteed 10am/10:30am arrival.

I won't go into the conversations i've had with band management as I don't wish to ruin the relationship I've built with QPrime, but trust in the fact that they are doing everything in their power to keep this song, and the album, from leaking.

As for the proof that what I'm offering here is legit, my name is Vinnie and I'm the Music Director for WXDX-FM in Pittsburgh. If you want to ask me any specific questions, I'll gladly (and privately) answer what I can with what I know.

I'm not pissed about people discussing this stuff, just about idiots finding it necessary to start a fucking new thread everytime they have a bowel movement. There's a huge number of threads with this topic, deeming this thread obsolete.

A rock station, 103.9 The X (www.wxeg.com) DJ has mentioned the first single Vicarious should get a play after 11pm on Saturday. No details on why but I just heard it myself. Couldn't find any info on the site about it, but I guess I'll find out Saturday.

You do realise that now that you have said that, the members of Tool, or their anti piracy people are gonna read this, and get on top of it. So bye bye early playing of Vicarious.... or whatever it is called... wait, what am i on about.... there is no new Tool album......
