View Full Version : Native American Maynard?

In response to that new album review;
Does anyone think this might be relating to the fact that some Native Americans display a vocal ability to sing in two different pitches simultaneously? Just a thought....

I think he was just talking about vocal style; this probably has something to do with the Mayan references we've been seeing in newsletters recently.
I don't know if people are really capable of singing two pitches at the same time (really singing, not humming or anything). It's physically impossible as far as I know.

i think your confusing tuvan singers/buddhist monks with native americans. maynard overtone chanting would be to much to handle.
it is not physically impossible, think how if you sing falsetto vs normal you are using different "registers" of the vocal cords.

I am thinking it might resemble the chanting in the Parabol/a remix.

It might explain why Maynard was wearing a cowboy hat....

Tuvan throat singing is really cool. It turns out almost everyone knows what a Tuvan throat singer sounds like, even if they've never really heard one - just think of Popeye's voice (the original, not someone imitating it.) Still can't remember?
Check out these audio interviews with Billy West (voice of Stimpy from Ren & Stimpy, Fry Zoidberg Farnsworth Zapp Brannigan and Nixon from Futurama, and lots of other stuff)
Interview with Billy West (http://www.shavedneck.com/billywestinterview/)
He demonstrates Tuvan throat singing, and how he recreates the Popeye voice. I highly recommend listening from beginning to end, good stuff.

Samples/Synthesizers dude.

It would sound cool if Maynard could really pull it off.
There's a difference between rapidly shifting registers by tapping one's throat and simutaneusly singing in two registers at once. Vocal chords can only produce sound in two registers at the same time if they're somehow damaged, i.e. frayed. Sound is created by two surfaces rubbing or slapping together which produces a range of frequency, but a continuous range. Think of a violin bow playing one string. In order to get two registers at once (violin bow scraping across multiple strings at once) you need more than one surface rubbing together.. ie one of the vocal chords is frayed.

And in the supposed review, it's Andy King's interpretation that he sounded Native American.
Can you picture Maynard singing ayyah ha ayyah ha ayya ha...0oo 0oo 0oo that would be funny as fuck.

Oh, man... that would be so funny but I think that it would totally ruin the album as a whole. Raindance :)
I did hear one native singing in a manner that sounded like chanting but not in that way. It was more Tibetan sounding but that's not generally what people come to think when the hear the phrase "Native American Singing." I'm nervous.....

Its totally possible to sing two pitches at the same time. One of my old orchestra directors was really into this group from the East somewhere that had a vocalist that could to it... its really strange. Kinda cool, though. I doubt Maynard has that kind of skill.

OK the fates that be must be toying with my progress on this one...but I distinctly remember downloading some rare/unreleased package of Tool songs off either Bittorrent or IRC at one time, and one of the songs was a strongly instrumental one that would have Maynard break through now and again to spit out some quite familiar strains of what sounded like Native American tribal chanting. The overall sound had a strong percussion and synth feel to it, with Carey laying down some pretty tight rhythyms. Anyone else know what I'm referring to? I've searched my mp3 collection high and low but can't find it.
BTW I think the download file was called something like "Tales of the Darkside" or something along those lines. That could be the ripping group for all I know.

I think you're talking about Choked, which isn't Tool, but does feature Maynard on vocals.
And Tales from the Darkside is a bootleg from 93 I think, just has some songs from Opiate and Undertow on it.

do you happen to know who it is? I'd really like to hear that again. I power searched on itunes but couldn't find anything.
EDIT: nm I found it on Amazon. On a compilation disk called Flyin' Traps. The other two chaps on the track are Tim Alexander and Mike Bordin.
Anyone Remeber the Flyin' Traps song he did?
Yeah, but I always thought that was studio effects on his voice?

You are referring to the Dutch release of Sober, aren't you? It has the songs that you mention (all live) except there are two versions of Prison Sex and then the album version of Sober. The songs, other than Sober, were recorded during Lalapalooza in 1993. The Dutch single is called Tales from the Darkside, by the way.

My geography teacher devoted two days of class to watch a documentary about Tuvan singers. Coming into class at 9am and being really stoned/tired and seeing that shit was fucking hilarious and amazing at the same time.

So a guy writes an article describing one of Tool's new songs as "In which Maynard becomes a Native American for no good reason."
Then Tool chuck a hissy fit and make the guy remove it.
Sounds like Tool are a bunch of Indian givers to me.
