Will there be another song hating on Record Labels, the fans, "the blood suckers in the in industry"? I certainly hope so...although I do feel Hooker's little brother Ticks wasn't about the fans...i think it was mainly about people having high expectations for the new album (magazines, blogs, etc.) Discuss

If they really are serious about the fact Meshuggah and Tomahawk are their big influences on this album, the entire album will be sounding like Hooker and T&L probably.

Not to mention the time signatures their drummer works with. That guy is fucking unbelievable. I can see why they wanted him to join in on Triad live.

The Green Party distanced itself from him in 1991 after he announced during a television interview that he was "a son of God". He began to dress only in turquoise and later maintained that the world was ruled by a secret group called "The Elite", or "Illuminati", which he linked to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-Semitic tract. In 1999, he published a book entitled The Biggest Secret, in which he wrote that the world is controlled by a race of reptilian humanoids, known in ancient times as the Babylonian Brotherhood, and that many prominent people are descended from them, including George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, and Kris Kristofferson. He believes that descendants of the reptiles engage in child molestation and Satanism.

I personally have enough faith in Tool that they will take whatever influences they may have had for this album and make it work. I love Meshuggah and Fantomas and Tomahawk. Of course, I don't want to hear a carbon copy of their sound, but it'll be interesting to see what tool did with it. Considering Tool has never released a single thing that I didn't like, I'm confident that the new album will be ground breaking and mind blowing.

With influences like Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo... not to mention the crazy complexity of Meshuggah's prog-metal... how could you go wrong?

I have a feeling this album will settle the Carey vs Portnoy debate!

Oh, and Awaking... I thought "Maynard's Dick" was a great tune!

You might end up pretty dissapointed with this album then. All indicaitons point to this being one of their heavier albums. While heavy doesn't mean angry, judging from everything that's gone on in the world since their last album, I would be very surprised not to hear a few angry tracks.

I still don't get why people are so worried about tool copying or taking influence from these other bands. Of all the bands I know, tool are one of the few who always have their own sound and feel, regardless of what they were influenced by. How tool takes in other musical ideas and turns them into their own is part of what makes them such an amazing band.

Especially considering they WERE influenced by other bands to begin with! The funny thing is - if a band were to say that they had no influences, they would be lying. Unless they created some obscure instruments and made something that had never been heard before. Even then, something gave them the idea.

This thread should simply be titled "More of the same... but different!"

Ticks & Leeches is a great tune - I've always felt that it doesn't really fit with the concept of the rest of the album (just my opinion).

I've always thought Stinkfist, although not as heavy as T&L or HWAP, is a song directed at a similar group of people. I would be thrilled to have the new album full of Stinkfist-esque songs.

From what we have heard about the style and potential theme ( the whole Turn off Your Television thing) I assume Nard will have plenty to be pissed at.

One thing though:
I am hoping to god he doesnt actually ever say "turn off your televison" in the lyrics.

that'd be gay.

Those are two totally different things. It's kind of cliche, but the message he is trying to get across is very important I think.

"Turn off your television" doesn't necessarily mean to physically turn off the TV but maybe to tune out the media. Watching a movie or playing video games is different than that. I suppose it should be "ignore the media" but you can't realistically do that, either. Just keep an open mind and QUESTION AUTHORITY.

I wouldn't say that, but I would say (style aside) that they are both virtuosos. If you've really sat down and listened to Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment closely, you'll notice that Portnoy is a machine. I personally prefer Carey's groove, but I would never say that he "OWNS" Portnoy (until this next album comes out.)

...and yes, it's a very large debate in some 'communities'.

Virtuoso skill is only a small part of what a fantastic musician is. The genius of Danny's drumming is what makes every TOOL song. Without him, they'd be lifeless satellites drifting...

It's all a matter of taste. I was being a little sarcastic anyway. I prefer Danny's drumming over Portnoy. I recognize that Port is a hell of a drummer and a hell of a technician. I have all the DT and LTE stuff. I just think that Danny's musicianship exceeds Portnoys. It's really more about what Danny doesn't do in a TOOL Song, than what he does do. Portnoy, IMO overplays half the time. Of course, DT is a prog metal group so.......what do I expect. I don't know. But, in my musical opinion I'd take Danny in my dream band any day over Portnoy.

Portnoy is good, but danny has a much more musical style. Dannys drumming fits absolutely pefectly with tools music.

I always got the impression I was the only one who thought that. If you didn't know better, 'Ticks' it could get mixed in with some Undertow material. I always thought that 'Hooker' should've been on Lateralus and 'Ticks' on Aenima.

To me, they are way too different of drummers to really compare them. I think they both fit very well with their respective bands. Virtuostically speaking, I think both drummers are phenomenal.

As for the "dream band" thing, I'd take whichever drummer fit with the music the band'd be making.

Off topic but yah man!!!

I also really REALLY like the singer in Good Charlotte...

I love how he dresses in all black and looks real hard all the time...it really reflects his singing style well...
