View Full Version : !!!!PLAY THIS SONG IN REVERSE!!! A REFLECTION IS ALWAYS IN REVERSE!!

when I first listen to the song reflection I noticed that there are some unique things in the song that only a studio tech or just a hardcore musicphile would have noticed.
one of them being that Maynard is using a reverse re verb on his voice on the last verse.
I thought nothing of it because Ive worked with reverse re verb in a studio before and I wasn't really that impressed.
but i got to thinking "Reflection in a mirror is the reverse of the image in front of it"
so I recorded the song on my wave file recorder and played it back in reverse.
I noticed that the song in reverse almost sounds identical to the song played normal.
I also got a whole new set of lyrics from that last verse. although alot of it is just a mess but there is a point that you can clearly hear lyrics.
on purpose or just a fluke?

who knows but with these guys you can expect the unexpected.

and as for those lyrics Im not telling what i think they say cuase then some turd/jerk is going to post something rude about it. and Im not up for any asshole comments tonite..

Yeah that's what I thought too, the brain trying to make sense of it and recognize something. and Ive got one of those over re-active brains to boot

What I'm still wondering is if there was any thing recorded on purpose with that reverse re verb, and maybe that's where I'm getting the words.

who knows

much thanks to toolloot for the re recording and web link! that first part sounds amazing! Like a wave and then slams into the song.

bad choice of words there, of course it doesnt sound "identical", my bad.

hey I wonder if Adam did the solo's like that to make sure they sounded the same in reverse? Jimmy Hedrix tried it on purple Haze I think. Ive got Adam on myspace, and ive got reverse reflection playing on my myspace profile. I wonder how i could get him to hear it?

I have to agree with this person, hey TOOL are deadly but I don't buy into all this hidden message stuff at all. Why? Of course TOOL are mysterious as **** but that doesn't mean that they are in any way malicious and here to **** people up. I think the idea that Maynard does portray very well is that you make it your own experience, which at the end of the day is the most important thing as it should be about the person and not just the band. Reflection is without doubt one of my favorite for the unbelievable performance by Danny Carey; he's progression is phenomenal in my opinion.

check out the violin in the intro in the following times:
Reflection (the original) - 2:07 to 2:13
Reflection (the reverse) - 8:54 to 9:00

sounds very very similar..
as if the violin in the original version is played backwards or mixed backwards with normal..

Wow this is pretty cool. I tried this only once before with Third Eye because it sounds pretty clear when played normally that there is some reverse speech in the background toward the end, but when i played it backwards i could make it out at all...

But this is pretty easy to pick out... from 1:48-2:20ish I can definatly hear some clear words. at 2:08 i can hear '...here foolish mortal' but not martyr. And then later at 2:16 i hear '...for more than forty years...'

Too bad i actually have to get some work done now, i think ill "waste" more time with this later.

RedMetalSox, if youre running windows, open up your sound recorder. It lives on my desktop now so i dont know where exactly to find it, but just go to your search tool and type in sndrec32. The file needs to be in wav. format, so if youve got a converter convert the trac first, then open sound recorder, go file -> open and open up the wav. file. Then, go to Effects -> reverse (its the last option).

Hope that helps and please excuse me if i sound patronising. I really do appear to be making the assumption that you have no idea how to use a computer. Not my intention.. I just did the whole 'make it as simple as possible just in case'. Hope that works for you.

I don't have headphones with me or a way of reversing it when I get home, but you got me thinking.
At my house we've got a nice sized fish tank. I'll have to do it in short intervals---I've never went digging for pearls, so I probably can't hold my breath more than a minute.
I'll get one of my friends to hold me upside down with my head completely submerged in the water while both the standard version and the backward version are pumped at maximum volume through speakers under and all aroud the outside of the tank except for the side my face is facing.
On this side I'll have a mirror positioned to reflect my upside down face as I listen---one minute at a time. I'll have a notepad to the side and a pen of course so I can transcribe everything I hear as I hear it.
Fuck it---I'l even smoke some DMT before going under (and of course whenever I come up for air----actually fuck the air! Just DMT and then back down. And yes, I'll wear goggles.) :O

That's seriously an amazing find. Bravo, man.

It's almost frightening to hear how similar the instrumentals are.

I might just save this to my iTunes library and tag it as Reflection (Reverse). How sick is that? It's just as awesome backward as it is front. Only Tool...

edit -- I just played a bootleg backwards, and the instrumentals sound more in-check than the studio version! mind = blown.

The reason this is sounds so much alike played backwards and forwards is because this song was made using the fibonnacci sequence, (a series of numbers in which the next number is the sum of the previous two) ie this number sequence: 1 1 2 3 5 8. This song uses that formula backwards and forwards ie: 1 1 2 3 5 8 5 3 2 1 1, the numbers being the syllables in the way lyrics sung, drums are beat, and guitar is played. Also seen in Lateralus with the lyrics "black, then, white are, all I see, in my in-fan-cy, red and yell-ow then came to be, reach-ing out to me, lets me see 1 1 2 3 5 8 5 3.

Said in more detail, with much more itneresting facts here : http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=6052

So, the vocals to reflection have always struck me as weird. When I first heard it, I thought they were all mashed up, the individual words or phrases were recorded at different times, and then put together roughly. Then I heard about the reversal idea, and it was then that I thought maybe the vocals are recorded in reverse. This is not to difficult to do on a basic level, but obviously a lot of time would have gone into the recording of this song. When I got round to reversing it myself, it was difficult to make out the vocals very clearly because of all the reversed music going on around it. But having reversed some other Tool songs, (Schism, Parabola, Lateralus and H.), the vocals do sound cleaner. So my theory is that some, if not all, the vocals were recorded in reverse.

Some of the words in the first (last part of the original song) actually come out very clearly in reverse, like the original poster says. I hear "foolish" quite clearly and "save" and "live". But I cant really make out any direct meaning for myself. Mayve its just coincidence. Or a very subliminal message. I want to listen to this next time I do shrooms, heh. Its a very interesting idea, sounds great backwards. Like alot said, especially the start... totally chaotic.

The windows sound recorder app only reads .waw files.

You need a converter... ill edit and paste a link if I get the time.

You can also change the soundinput(or output? always muddle them up.) from "microphone" to "stereo mix" so it records what you hear. Then you can record the normal Reflection and after you've recorded it just play it backwards.

I don't think this is an awesome find. It's rather nothing, rubbish, garbage. I've got no keen observations when it comes to music and I have always thought of putting this song backwards. Did I do it? No. Why? Because I knew the reward of doing so would not be worthy of the effort.

So big fucking deal you've got some jumbled lyrics and the song sounds sort of similar to it played normally. It's merely a coincidence and if not--it still isn't interesting. I can flip my avatar in photoshop and while it will sort of look alike, it won't be the same. Amazing? No.

This isn't either.

Its only a rich kids toy as of now. I imagine he'll refine it further later on. Could make for a interesting body armour (Mjolnir Mark 5 anyone?)

Personally, i don't think anti matter would be viable, magnetism kinda limits us to places with magnetic fields, meaning no space flight. Space flight should be done with either light to kinetic energy converters or gravity machines. Gravity is a near universal force. Light is a definite universal wave/particle. It makes sense in theory, its just the practice that we don't know yet.

Master_Of_Nothing

They all get refined. This is the first 'functional' jetpack (i think, correct me if i'm wrong)
so everything from now on should be more refined.

Similar stuff can be found from this guy's videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/AleksMCS

I dont think there is anything into it though.

I dont want to upload anything, because of IPR issues, but just download free audacity and you can easily do stuff like that, even in chipmunks.

And reversed mixed with normal ? Well, in some parts it syncs but well.

The plain reversed sounds pretty nice, but i think they used somekind of reversing for guitar sounds and some other effects, thats why reversed version sounds "not-so-mixed-up".
