Yeah, I think that was sort of a Dropped-B, similar to but not the same as what he used on Prison Sex..

hey, im mostly influenced by classic rock, but do I ever tune my guitar up to E when I write? as did most classic rock. I hardly see tuning as a reason not to be influenced by someone. Or maybe tools new music sound wont be influenced in tuning wise by meshuggah tuning, but do you you think that excludes the style of songwriting influences. Im sorry, but i think your judging the difference between a asshole and a urethra, not the vagina and the mouth (which are used basicly in the same manner in sexual acts [being musical orgasms] the music is)

Okay, I lost you when you started talking about human anatomy. But i think I got what you were saying about the tuning. Problem is, Meshuggah just wouldn't be meshuggah if they didn't tune so ridiculously low. I mean it would be one thing if it was dropped C or something, then Tool could get away with playing in dropped D i suppose. But for christ's sake, they tune to dropped F. That low string is just part of their sound. My point being that classic rock can't exactly be considered a correct analogue because classic rock is classic rock no matter what tuning it's played in. That, however, is not the case with Meshuggah.
doesnt Meshuggah use 8 string guitars?
Sometimes, yes. But not in every song.

Where did you hear that? The low string is an F. There's hardly a need for an extra string when this can be accomplished simply by tuning the low string on a 7-string down a step.

Wow, I generated a whole conversation! Cool!

I highly doubt Tool used anything besides drop D (or the B tunings) at all. When I read that there was going to be a Meshuggah influence I think it was referring solely to the drumming; I don't think there will be a change in guitar work (though some of Lateralus (like The Grudge) sounded sort of Meshuggah-like, in a way) but I do believe there will be some much more complex drumming. Which is cool.

In response to Tool, being influenced by Fantômas and Meshuggah; I think it is an overstatement. I believe that Tool was inspired the heavyness of their work, not the music in the literal sense. Like Danny said its merely a "vibe".

["... the aggressive vibe of the material has been a reaction to Tool's tours with thunderously intricate bands like Fantômas and Swedish death-prog band Meshuggah."]

If anything one should look at other bands, take Nine Inch Nails for example, lately Trent Reznor has been listening to Saul Williams, Autolux and M.I.A.; and therefore can be listed as influences, it doesn't mean that the music is going to sound like what the band listens to on their own time, influence and inspiration can be found in the strangest places.

I'm kind of embarassed. I have been playing guitar since I was 13 and all this time i thought the low string on a 7-string was tuned to A. This may, in part, be due to the fact that I have never played a 7 string, nor given more than just a quick look at any 7-string tabs.

Timothy

Well, you learn something new everyday. ;)
It isn't uncommon for guitarists to tune the low B string down to A, to get the one finger power chords going, so you weren't 100% off the mark.

In My experience, the douche bags that spend the most time learning all the tech shit, like tuning and scales (not that this knowledge is not useful, it is undeniabley), can't jam to save their life and will only play the songs they know. Give me someone who can play by ear and adapt to the playing situation. basically, Spend less time talking about music, more time practicing. Preesh. And yes, my name does rule.
