TOOL PROMO TOUR
As it now stands, in a few weeks (mid-February) the members of the band (except for Adam) and their manager will be traveling to parts of Europe, England, Japan and Australia on a bit of a promo tour, meaning that they will be meeting with record company people and doing various interviews with the press in order to promote their new record and upcoming tours. Although any press releases are usually timed to coincide with the release of the record, there will undoubtedly be leaks, so those of you who scour the internet should be on the lookout around this time. As the others field questions and deal with promo issues abroad, Adam will remain in Los Angeles to direct the new Tool video.

Sounds good to me!!!! Another straight up update from that man who is called Blair. Honestly, he is the man!!! Anticipation is building for this release!! I'd say two more weeks before we hear official word of album title and tracklistings, they would want to give it officially before it is leaked. Chur

sometimes its a matter of the cd or single cd, getting into the wrong hands, that person rips it into his/her computer and puts it out on P2P

YES!!! THE ALBUM RELEASE WON'T BE MUCH LONGER!!!! THIS IS THE BEST UPDATE IN WEEKS/MONTHS!!

What does surprise me is blair actually encourages us to download leaks
"there will undoubtedly be leaks, so those of you who scour the internet should be on the lookout around this time"

so hes says that there will be without a doubt a leak of the album/tracks and that us internet users should look around for them. Something sounds a little fishy don't ya think? What could it be? I'm guessing Tool is gonna take the Album with them obviously so record execs, magazine critics and all can hear the album before it gets released so they can write a review.

So maybe blair is banking on the fact that magazine and website critics will leak the music??

Anyways its about time i join TA to get some presale passwords, because a tour won't be too far off! THIS IS AWSOME!

ATARI
01-23-2006, 04:00 PM
It all depends on the venue. It's not the band or the record label's decision whether or not o put up an age limit. It depends on factors, such as location, if alcoholic beverages are being served, etc

I'm pretty sure that Blair was referring to leaks regarding song titles and perhaps release dates or whatever, not actual songs. Tool will be speaking to a lot of people and some information may be given out accidentally... I think that's what Blair meant, really.

Let us review the Lateralus timeline...

Feb-2001: First Lateralus mini-review by Kerrang!
Mar-2001: More in-depth Lateralus reviews appear
First Week of Apr-2001: Lateralus artwork unveiled
01-May-2001: Schism streamed from toolband.com
06-May-2001: Schism officially released for radio play
15-May-2001: Lateralus album released/tour kicks off

What can we learn from this? Probably that the "leaks" Blair was referring to are information leaks pertaining to track names and descriptions (ala the Feb-2001 Kerrang! article (http://toolshed.down.net/articles/index.php?action=view-article&id=February_2001--Kerrang.html)). Probably looking at an April album release (4/11 from Jan newletter). That means we might see the artwork in late Feb/early Mar and the first single in late March.

When I read it, I thought Blair was referring more to song/album title information leaking than the actual album leaking. It'll only get better from here, for Tool fans.

he is not encouraging people to download the album leak, but is merely stating a fact. all albums leak these days. tool is always very careful, though. when lateralus was coming out, journalists were marched in and only allowed to listen once. i would be very surprised if any songs besides the single come out before the actual release.

either way, im waiting until i buy the album before i listen to a single song. ive been anticipating this album for years, so im not going to ruin it by listening to one song just to satisfy myself. im not even gonna hear the single on the radio.

and anyone who will download the album to see if it is good enough to buy cannot call themselves a tool fan. if you think 10 bucks is too much to spend on a cd, then don't even try to call yourself a true fan. from what people are saying about this album's quality (maybe the best yet), one amazing song will make this album worth $10.

When will it be available?

i dont know if it will or not. if its a long single (a la schism), i doubt radio stations will be playing it like nickelback or green day.

im guessing the single will be in the 5-7 minute range, so hearing it more than a few times a day would be surprising. it doesnt matter to me though because i wont listen to it on the radio. i dont want my first taste of new music to be an edited radio quality version with no bass.

Schism, Parabola, and Lateralus all got "hit" worthy play here when they were new singles. I wouldn't be surprised if a shitty version gets leaked a la The Hands That Feeds.

Ktuluvic
01-23-2006, 10:25 PM
Radio stations use their number of spins as currency with the record lables. Song X gets so many plays and the radio station gets ad revenu and other things in return. Which is why shitty music gets so much play.

But that being said, the station director still has say in what gets played and to some extent so do the DJ's, even though it may only be a few songs out of every dozen. So the few songs they choose to play tend to be stuff like themselves like. Since tool provides a good break from the mundane crap they usually have to play, it tends to get picked by a lot of station directors and dj's. Not to mention call in requests weight heavily into those decisions.

This sounds like solid news.

Yet I'm sure in about 2 months we'll be pissed off cause we won't have heard anything yet and it all ends up getting pushed back a few more months. Because thats what happens.

As for leaking: the most common way movies and CDs leak before their street date is some employee of a distributor buys/steals one from their back room (usually we get movies in at Blockbuster anywhere between a week and a month before their street date). I rent prestreets and rip them, as do a lot of other people... and some of them share them on p2p. And now you know the story of how stuff gets leaked.

usually, when artists do a promotional tour for a forthcoming record, they bring with them managers, which bring with them promocds of the new record... so that journalists can write a preview of the album... that's what Blair meant for "leaks"... people who get the chance to listen those promos, usually are the ones who put them in the internet.
Or, in some cases (but that's my opinion), some bands -like You2, Korn-A-Muse, even Telehead and INI- put it themselves on the net to taste the ground, to gain free advertising.

Want to read something funny? Here's a quote from DC in May 2001...

"Right before we went into the studio to record, we were
looking at this sheet that we had on the rehearsal space wall and
there were probably ten songs that we started developing that didn't
make it onto this record. And they're not that far away," says Carey.
"We all breathed a big sigh of relief and just kind of went, 'Wow,
this is encouraging, we might be able to put out another record in two
years."
It's never that easy when it comes to Tool, though. There are
always bigger projects to undertake and a new standard to set.
"But we're also thinking that maybe the next thing will be
something like The Wall-type project with a movie and a longer record
that'll serve as a soundtrack. That's what I'd like to see anyway, if
things go as planned," says Carey. "That's a pretty major undertaking,
so it might take four years or something. But if we did just another
record, then it definitely won't take another four years - and that's
something I can guarantee."

There are a lot of ways it will get out. It always does. I'm surprised Tool have kept the entire thing wrapped up this long, actually. I would have thought that the single would at least have leaked by now, assuming it is coming mid-Feb. The radio stations probably already have the singles, or will be getting them this week. It'll get out one way or another...

Well, I do know that from what we've been told, the earliest the album could come out is April 11th. Considering Schism was released for radio play 9 days before the Lateralus release on May 15th, 2001 (even though the guys had already made the promotional rounds in February and March of that year), and believing it unlikely things would be much different this time around, late March for the new single seems realistic.

Here's what we have to look forward to before we hear any of the music - see how correct this sounds to you:

Total Rock, April 2001 (http://toolshed.down.net/articles/index.php?action=view-article&id=April_2001--Totalrock.com.html)
1) The Grudge 8.34
Carey's tribal drummings make their entrance as an introduction to
Maynard's soft vocals which lead into a typically light/heavy Tool
fan-pleasing opener. Precision instrumentation notable from the
outset. The ending is soooo heavy that the sudden, vicious silence
after the track's ending might send you permanently round the bend.
[3]

2) Eon Blue Apocalypse 1.05
Noodly oddness we've all come to expect and smile at between songs.
[1]

3) The Patient 7.14
Aenima-tinged outing featuring very Maynard vocals. Ultra heavy in
parts. [2]

4) Mantra 1.12
More inter track oddness which sounds like slowed down whale song
played down a very long, high diameter petrol pipeline. Skunk weed
best avoided. [1]

5) Schism 6.43
Lead track to radio features a great precision bass intro leading
into counterpoint layered vocals of the sort no other rock band could
even think of attempting. Unusual scumbling beat almost spells f-u-n-
k before a monstrous ending which features what feels like a thousand
floor toms butt f**king a platoon of bass drums. [3]

6) Parabol 3.04
Soft and fluffy interval oddness not a million miles from bitsa APC.
[1]

7) Parabola 6.02
Undertow-tinged classic with a driving metal feel. Raging Keenan
vocals into fine Adam guitar stuff which almost feels Iommi-esque.
Uplifting, off the beat feel turns very Sabbath-y towards the climax.
[3]

8) Ticks and Leeches 8.07
Stunning. Undertowish start quickly gains a more Opiate feel as Tool
show Slipknot pups how to do rage and menace. Elastic and angry,
raw 'n' rough-edged. Quiet mid-section kicks back into classic Tool
heaviness leading to a breathtaking, EST-inducing finish as Maynard
megaphonically and menacingly repeatedly demands 'Is This What You
Wanted?? Is This What You Had In Mind??'. F**king killer. [4]

9) Lateralus 9.22
The title track scoops the best track honours by a Wasp's sting.
Opening with a marching beat which almost recalls sea shanties of
yore. That hypnotic, tribal drumbeat again f**ks with a twangling,
elastic off the beat funk style before dropping the listener dead in
his tracks with an absolutely awesome, monster ending. [5]

10) This Position 4.46
Much softer and a bit of an APC-tinged breather. Bass-played-like-a-
guitar start grabs attention and reminds of Tool's superlative
musical excellence. Tool at their prettiest. Butter wouldn't melt in
their mummsy little mouths as MK happily hums the mantra 'Watch The
Weather Change'. Somehow one suspects pink clouds are nowhere near.
[2]

11) Reflection 11.08
Leads me to invent a new sub-genre... 'HypnoProg' as those tribal
drums indicate menace close by - yet again. Then Indian
instrumentation. Yes, Indian. Like Ravi Shankar-on-crack Indian. This
is a heavy, groove-laden thing. Very heavy and very groove-laden
indeed. Do not attempt to listen to this alone, stoned, in a dark
room. You might never claw your way back into reality. My surprise,
almost equal, favourite track on first listen. [5]

12) Triad 6.37
Hard to follow the last track but a blisteringly heavy start with
mild industrial flavourings and a Rollercoaster ride feel still make
it a notable closer. [3]

13) Faaip De Oiad 2.39
Slightly irritating Die Eier Von Satan, electrical sizzling-type
almost hidden track which serves wonderfully to prompt a hit
the 'album replay' button reflex and no doubt has the band giggling
to themselves as they wonder what the real Tool obsessives might read
into its inclusion. [1]

Kerrang, April 2001 (http://toolshed.down.net/articles/index.php?action=view-article&id=April_2001--Kerrang.html)

The Grudge (8.34)

Starts with a barrage of tribal drumming. As with all previous Tool
records, the production here is superb, but the band have never
sounded this massive before. Maynard James Keenan is on rare form,
bellowing a refrain of ‘sinking deeper’ over the offbeat, staccato
riffs that twist and turn for several minutes. The song ends with an
unnerving and genuinely psychedelic breakdown, before the whole thing
descends into cacophony.

Eon Blue Apocalypse (1.05)

A moment of calm before the second track proper, this consists of
little more than some reverb-drenched and sombre-sounding guitar
picking. Quite eerie.

The Patient (7.14)

Guitarist Adam Jones picks out a delicate, watery-sounding riff, as
Keenan sings gently beneath a cloak of thick reverb and distortion.
As the riff builds Keenan’s vocals become clearer; the singer’s
tremulous voice intoning ‘still here...giving blood...giving faith’.
After a brief and mellow mid-section, the song explodes once again
into a vast, chugging riff and the album’s first real chorus. The
guitars sound absolutely huge, as they do throughout the album.

Mantra (1.12)

One minute of what sounds like swirling, FX-laden Islamic chanting.

Schism (6.43)

The track that Tool will be sending out to radio stations in the US
is by no means a catchy three-minute single. The song begins with a
truly inspired bass riff from Justin Chancellor, and then builds and
builds, getting progressively heavier until the chorus appears. A
hypnotic mid-section follows, and builds into a crushing and
straightforward riff, some staggering drumming from Carey and a
pained chant of ‘I know the pieces fit!’ from Keenan. Bewildering
stuff.

Parabol (3.04)

Muted and sombre chords give way to some ethereal, floaty vocals. A
droning didgeridoo appears in the background, and a distinctly trippy
atmosphere develops...

Parabola (6.02)

...before a driving, up-tempo riff kicks in, with more tribal-
sounding drums from Carey and some more stunning vocal harmonies from
Keenan. This is by far the catchiest track on ‘Lateralus’. After some
staggering interplay between bass and drums, the song ends with a
massive, doom metal riff which sounds like Soundgarden’s ‘4th Of
July’, only fatter and scarier.

Ticks & Leeches (8.07)

The longest track so far begins with yet another awe-inspiring drum
intro and a shredding, Arabian-flavoured riff. The song then breaks
down into another gradual build-up of complex riffs and aggressive
vocals, with Keenan spitting ‘Is this what you wanted? Is this what
you had in mind? Is this what you’re getting?’. An astonishing track
and one of the album’s finest.

Lateralus (9.22)

A simple guitar melody leads into some bass-heavy, throbbing effects
before a gradual build into more incredible drumming from Carey and a
bizarrely complex guitar riff. The guitars fall away to leave Keenan
whispering melodies across the rock-solid drumming, with Jones being
extra generous with his use of Wah-wah, distortion and feedback. This
song is like Led Zeppelin on steroids – only heavier!

This Position (sic) (4.46)

The mellowest track on ‘Lateralus’, this serves more as an intro to
what follows than a stand-alone song. A subtle bass intro, with
layers of reverb and delay, is accompanied by bongo playing from
Carey. A delicate melody floats above the vaguely Eastern-sounding
atmospherics.

Reflection (11.08)

The album’s longest track immediately stands out as the most ‘out
there’ thing Tool have recorded to date. A powerful intro from the
rhythm section leads into a riotous wall of effects and distorted
vocals. After a series of intricate, punishing riffs, feedback and
earth-shattering bass bring ‘Reflection’ to a stunning climax, which
leads into...

Triad (6.37)

...yet more suffocating noise. An ugly and distorted guitar solo
howls above some FX-laden drums and more trippy atmospherics. The
song fades, with Jones’ guitar on Wah-wah overload.

Faaip De Oiad (2.39)

The album’s ‘hidden’ track is essentially two-and-a-half minutes of
electronic distortion and the distant sound of drummer Danny Carey
going ballistic. A suitably mind-bending end to a phenomenally
original and intense album.

I don't think we're going to get a whole lot of news in the short term. Probably just tour dates (like Roskilde) leaking out every now and then until late Feb/early March when (based on the Lateralus timeline) they might unveil the album artwork.

The timeline for the new album is almost right on with this one. I would say we can expect the new album no earlier than May. Once the CD is completely done it always takes 3-5 months for promotion. I just dont see the new album out in early April.

Wow, according to the Lateralus timeline we won't be seeing the new album for quite some time. Lateralus was officially revealed on Feb. 3rd and the CD came out May 15, which is 3.5 months later. If we have to go through the fake stuff first and considering that we haven't had official word on anything just yet (fake or real) then I would suspect that the new album will be released in June, probably on 666.

Maybe we will get the DVD first after all. That would be nice, actually.

that said, their won't likely be a delay (at least for the same reasons) for this record, so we might see it a little bit sooner...

Does anyone else find it strange that the timeline to this album is nearly identical to that of Lateralus? Maybe it is just a coincidence, I just find it rather odd.

Bare in mind that the time they revealed Lateralus they planned it for release on April 17, so I'm sure if it stayed that way it would have only been a couple of months.

Could be due to their plans of playing festivals or something. Maybe they just want to tour during summer, so they have to release their record before that. Let´s hope it won´t be delayed till next year same date.

It seems to me like they're shooting for mid-April. Whether it actually comes out on the target date is a different story.
