Mantra is a track (they edited to make it slower then it is) from one of Maynard's siammese (sp?) cats making a weird noise...so yeah its definitely the cat lol

I originally thought it was the sorta noise a whale makes. Then i heard two storys...one about the cat, and another one aying it was an old lady saying 'i love you' and it had just been slowed down loads. sounds like bs though. The cat one would make sense, seeing as Eon BLue Apocolypse is about a dog.

A mantra is a mystical formula of invocation or incantation (as in Hinduism).

Ive always thought it was whales communicating with each other, making it a perfect lead in to Schism, which is about the bands' ability to communicate.

i originally thought it was whale noises as well but the more i play around with the speed and pitch of the track the less sure i am that it is whale noises or even any of the other things that have speculated about it.

....how is EBA about a dog? It doesn't have any lyrics, the title isn't anything to do with a dog....and the general song wouldn't remind you of ol' Lassy, would it?

Its not lyrically about a dog, but it was dedicated to Adams' dog (Eon Blue) who died shortly before the recordings

I thought they recorded the sound Maynard's cat made when it was squeezed, then slowed it down.

I believe I read somewhere (that elusive place that means I probably made it up) that when the vinyl is slowed down (or something... I'm a child of the CD age) it sounds like an actual mantra being recited...

it says in the tool FAQ that maynard squeezed his siamese cat.

** I read that "Mantra" is just someone saying "I love you" - is it?

Tool fan Yaz ([email protected]) found a 2001 interview with Maynard in the Japanese magazine "Buzz" where MJK stated for the first time in public ("a treat for the Japanese fans," he says) that the track "Mantra" is the sound of him squeezing one of his Siamese cats. The cat made such a weird noise that he immediately recorded this, played it real slow and made a track out of it.

Take everything Tool (Or anyone) says with a grain of salt.

Lol yeah, the band's message is to never take anything they say[as well as others] seriously. Just look at the song Hush.

Actually, I'd like everyone to open up Soundrecorder and record the song. Double or Quadruple the speed, and listen. It is, clearly, an actual Mantra.

If you up the speed %400 then all you get is a repeating whine and moan.
That's it.
